Week 5 - Saturday

At 5pm today I was feeling pretty depressed. Out of the tough choice of Fab, Young & MTay I'd picked the one who hadn't scored. To rub it in, Villa got a penalty but Young, their usual penalty taker (scored against Liverpool), was taken off duty & Milner (someone I'd seriously considered) took it & of course scored.

Plus, Van Persie didn't scored despite having a hattrick of great chances, Rosicky was on the bench getting only 10 minutes & Tuncay didn't even get off the bench. The only (very) bright spot was Thomas Vermaelen, but I didn't expect to break 50 points.
.
Then, the points came in & somehow I'd amassed 90 points - I'm was very pleased with that considering the day I thought I'd had but then disappointed again with Gerrard 5.5 points. Lets not mention the fact I'd dropped Torres for Van Persie. But thanks to O'Hara (what great value he's proving to be), phantom points for Young & Van Persie, a huge 33 points for The Verm (new nickname?) & some decent supporting roles from Myhill & Warnock I've had an above average week.

I'm into the top 3000 with 95.5 points with Drogba & Heitinga still to play so it SHOULD be a 100 point week. I'm happy with that seeing as I made some major selection mistakes & I've grabbed Torres back on the barndoor. I'll reveal my full barndoor/early week 6 team tomorrow.

Changing subject, I'd just like to say a HUGE thank you to EVERYONE who is contributing to the blog via the comments section. I'm sure you'll all agree that the community we've built up in such a short space of time is really quite something & I've been overwhelmed by the response (127 comments on one post in less than 12 hours!!!!). We have so many people offering great advice to each other & I'm certain this advice is helping just as much (if not more) than my own posts. We have some great characters already & I'm hoping it'll continue for the rest of the season - there's no reason why it shouldn't & I reckon we're all doing pretty well as a result.

Finally, CONGRATULATIONS to Andy aka SteveBobFC for being TOP OF THE OVERALL STANDINGS tonight...1ST PLACE. Fantastic work mate, I'm very proud if the blog has helped in anyway - thanks for the kind words. After Chris M (VelvetUndergroundAllstars) you're now the 2nd blog regular to reach the summits of the overall standings & I'm really pleased so many people are doing so well.

That's it for tonight, I'm off to have a beer...4 more games tomorrow with plenty of points to be had & I'm obviously excited/nervous about Chelsea v Spurs.

Torres, Gerrard, Lennon, Reid, O'Hara & Gordon are all likely to be in my Week 6 team...but one final final question...is it time to drop Tuncay? And how the bloody hell am I gonna fit Defoe in?

(That's 2 questions)

Cheers,
AM

Holy shite, that bloke Andy has 151.5 points with Drogba still to play against an offensive minded Tottenham team. I genuinely want Drogba to score 50 points so he can get 200 points in a single week which would be the first time I've seen that without double games.

AM,

I have been thinking about dropping Tuncay, but someone's post on your "week 5- my team' thread made sense. He basically said that Stoke will eventually play Tuncay since they spent so much money on him and if he only amasses 10 points in a 5 game span he is still returning double his value.

I thought about dropping Tuncay and MTAY for Benitez and Hunt (may have to down grade Ro-Jo for Sonko too). But I like having kick takers on my team (i.e. MTAY) so I think I'll just use Tuncay as a filler at 1 (which is ideal for a filler imo) rather than spread the wealth around and get a so-so striker is just as likely to throw-up a goose egg as Tuncay.

Which brings me to another move I am considering, dropping Ro-Jo (Roger Johnson) and MTAY for Lampard and Sonko. I'll have to see what Lamps does tomorrow against my...uh our...Spurs though.

Kellz said...

@stlram01: I think the cash for Lampard could be better spent next week. He hasn't been producing those 20+ weeks like he did last season (granted its early). He has however been producing good 12-16pt performances which is great for most other middies, however you don't want that from 19mil midfielder. I think AM would agree with me, I am off the Lampard Bus. Gerrard price for matchup is the best choice if your going to spend big bucks, plus after today he is cheaper.

But hey thats just my thought on the subject :D

BTW: Pompey the new Derby? Could we see great value returns from teams playing against them? If anything Bily and Heiti will be in my team next week barring injury.

mehicoradio said...

barring injury i can't see my team changing outside the 2 moves i already made.

After the Gerrard points, finished with 84 points. I wanted to go with Cesc but had doubts and figured Gerrard would be better. Figures last week i drop him and get screwed, this week i bring him back....and get screwed.

Sonko and Myhill ended up working out, which was good.

Still have Heiti, Rooney, and Drogba to play so i feel pretty good that i can get at least 100 points. It would be my first since week 1 (which i got 176 points, all time high for me)

Anonymous said...

@Kellz

Yeah, I agree. I dropped Lampard for Gerrard 2 weeks ago and was considering having them both, now that Nando is cheaper I can, but I'll stick with MTAY and a decent defender for now.

Pompey could be this years Derby, will have to see what happens tomorrow.

2 bad choices last week..

dropped torres for eduardo/kitson.. but didn't hang on to them.. instead i got agbonlahor which got only half of ed & kits points..

due to agbonlahor upgrade, i drop o'hara n heitinga.. and got wilko (0 pts) and moko (1.5pts) as filler..

anyway, managed to get 74pts with drogba and lamp still to play.. hopefully combined they can get 30more points so i can break the 100pts mark tonight..

which man city midfielder would u guys choose between ireland, barry and wright phillips? i need one city middie for next week's home game against westham and i cant decide..

jeremy

ToffeeDave said...

I think it's time to hop off the Mtay bandwagon for this week guys. I had him the past 2 weeks and he returned roughly his value in points but I can't see him getting nearly anything against a stingy Birmingham team. They held Hull to almost no points and even Hunt scored under 10. drop Mtay, let his price drop and pick him up when he has a more favorable fixture against Tottenham. At least he will have attacking chances against Tottenham.

Max said...

@jeremy..

i would go for wright phillips.. altho much pricey than barry n ireland.. he's much consistent on the pitch.. and i thought he will start to gain more points in coming games.. imho..

@ Anon - Very funny you got to decide bw these two choices...cuz I got the 4 of them, and take my word for it - it feels GREAT...!!! I'm happy with my team, finally...!!! In the first 4 weeks I was content with my players,BEFORE THE MATCHES and I ended up with avg displays of 80-90pts. This week(5) I simply HATED my team, and I ended up with 83pts with Given,Distin,Pienaar,Duff,Drogs still to go (I think I'll break the 100pts barrier). Simple math isn't it...Ohhh, Fantasy Football...it's soooo GREAT...!!!

my first draft team for next week

Myhill (can't afford to replace him and after next week, he has a good run of games where he could make lots of saves)

Vermaelen - glad i got him at 6.02!

G Johnson - although his position is one i am reconsidering

Sonko - cheap, getting games, not getting minus points = good filler

Mokoena - filler but has started getting a few positive points so far this season

M Taylor - only had him once this season but last season whenever I chose him he did well

Lennon - think he could destroy burnley

D Fletcher - bit of a hunch this one, but will have to wait and see if he stays in the side (kind of depends on whether Kightly plays today)

Drogba - nuff said

Rooney - ditto

Defoe - ditto

I need some opinions on something.

I don't normally ask for alot of help, but this weekend i'd like to get bily in. I currently have

Fabregas, Benayoun, Rosicky, Lennon

My question is, in your opinion, will Rosicky get any playing time now that the return of Arshavin and Denilson is imminent? I think he'll continue to get 10 or 15 minutes for a while now so i may get out now and make a move for Bily.

So what do you guys think?

Keep on Rosicky or get on Bily?

Many thanks!

@Mike B - I know that Denilson won't play for the next couple of weeks, and I believe that after the mid-week LC match Wenger will give Rosicky a starting spot. The question is now whether you believe he'll do well against Fulham (who are currently 1-0 down at wolves XD). I'll advise you to take him if your dilemma is between him and Bily...

Verm,Heitinga,Corluka
Sicky,Reid,O Hara,Gerrard
Drogba,Torres,Tuncay
BD Intention:
Corluka TO Wilk
Gerrard TO Lennon
Tuncay TO Defoe
Thank you so much for your advice...

Fr: AOJK

Kellz said...

@AOJK: Heres my advice
(1) Keep Gerrard, very nice fixture at home to Hull
(2) Drop Rosicky, hasn't been starting
(3) If anything, drop Reid for Lennon
(4) Wilkinson did not play against Bolton, why would you drop Corluka for him when Stoke play United?
(5) Corluka is expensive so you could drop him down to a defender around 5-6 and free up cash to possibly field Reid and Lennon.
(6) Defoe to Tuncay looks good if your ready to drop that bus

Hope that helps

Ruki said...

Tuncay enables extra point for other slots, but also take one of the 3 slots for strikers, which I consider the "main scoring line" in YFF. Bad wording, but the strikers are the ones who have the highest chance to score on the field. So while the money investment on him is totally worth it, the opportunity cost of losing one slot for other striker might not, depends on how well your other slot ( that you got by using tuncay) is doing.

I got Tuncay for 2 weeks, but dropped him for other striker now. Probably defoe or saha.

Kellz said...

Given -6, ouch. But was to be expected, wish I had dropped him now that his value is only .24 above what I had him for!

Mike Lowrey said...

I have a midfield of Lennon/Benayoun/O'hara with one spot still open. With little under 13 to spend and I'm contemplating mainly between Cahill, Barry or Milner. Ireland or Krancjar would be options, but having the latter means 4 Spurs players and he's not a sure starter. I'm missing peanuts to get SWP, he'd be my first choice. Any advice?

Anonymous said...

-6 from Given? 0.5 from Richards?
I thought it was a good week for me when I had 93 points with 4 players to go, but now it's 87.5 with 2 to go. Those are still Drogba and Defoe, and I'm happy to hear that Drogba had an assist. But still I'm very annoyed.
And yet, I'm not going to drop them both. Richards can get a CS home to Westham and will probably attack more often (on 88 minute he could have scored).
Given is still a great keeper, and would have gotten 0 points if only the referee kept the time right (and after shipping in three goals!).
I've gone up about 2,500 places, and even the Torres performance didn't hurt me so much. But this derby can. I still expect to go over 100 with Drogba and Defoe, but I'm very sad now and I don't know where those negative points are going to take me to...

Dropping Given saved me 13 points, and now I have an extra 1.85 to spend. I feel better.

I couldn't drop Tuncay if I wanted to. I had trouble scraping up enough money for a credible midfield for next week, although the aforementioned Given money might help. Tuncay v1.00 is a double-edged sword, but I'm much less upset about him sitting on the bench than I was in Week 3 when Robinho sat out (and Defoe generated bubkes despite being on the pitch for 80 minutes). Moreover, as Doctor Teeth pointed out, he should pay off big once he starts to play.

Oh, and c'mon Drogba. It's looking like another one of those matches where there's a lot of scoring but from unexpected sources.

-Bradley

Anonymous said...

Wow, that was quick. Ask and ye shall receive. Go, go Drogba.

My condolences to the AM, who must be suffering in the real world right now, despite being elated in fantasy.

Kellz said...

Drogba has saved my week. Was 86pts before Heiti, Given, Drogba and Given got me -6 in a really entertaining match, wish they could have held for the draw. Heiti YC and 2 fouls means he probably only netted 2-3pts with a CS, however Drogba is on 1G, 2SOT, and 1A, not bad, hopefully enough to break 100. Good luck BD guys, I know I am going to love jumping on cut price Spurs!

Thinking of THudd for this next week, anyone with me? The Spurs I will field are Bassong, THudd, Lennon, possibly Defoe if I drop Tuncay, and possibly Corluka, I just don't think Burnley can score on the road against Spurs.

So much for my "I'm sticking with a Drogba - Rooney - Tuncay front line until the ANC" statement from yesterday. Obviously we'll have to wait for the prognosis, but given he had to be stretchered off, it doesn't look promising.

I hope Bassong's injury isn't as bad as it looked.

-Bradley

Mike B said...

OK, it has to be done quick so I have to get a lot of opinions. I want to wait to the final examination of Drogba, but it did look harsh, and if I want to get Saha in I need to do it now, because I have Drogba at 10.75, and Saha's price will go high (and I have to bare in mind I have to find good replacement for Bassong).

What do you think I should do?

SF

mehicoradio said...

thank you Given! his bad day dropped his price almost down by about 2, frees up some cash. Hopefully Lennon didn't have a great day, knocking his price down as well.

Going to wait and see how bad the Bassong and Drogba injuries are before i jump off both of them. ESPN saying Bassong likely with a concussion so it really depends on how serious of one it is.

i would suggest parnaby of birmingham 6.98, a little bit expensive than bassong, but will be playing at home against bolton...

Saha is 10.51 now, so we can straight up swap Drogs for Saha if need be.

It's a miracle, or is it just me?
After 24 points Saha's price has gone up by only 1.3 milion! That means I can wait with the Drogba switch until the prognosis arrive. I might be wrong, but that's how it seems!

Is it true if a player sustains a concussion they have to be held out of action for a minimum of 10 days? That means no Bassong next week and possibly longer.

Check the fixtures list again Spurs play @ home to Burnley. Its Citeh who play @ home to West Ham. So yes Spurs have a very good chance to keep a clean sheet considering all of Burnley's goals have come on home turf if I am not mistaken.

To help you on your decision, based on Spurs form, besides top 4 opposition, and based on Stokes good form at home to any opposition (Chelsea needed last minute goal to beat them), I suggest Lennon/Defoe as Defoe should score and Lennon should pick up valuable pots for crosses etc.

Kellz said...

Re: Anonymous: If your hesitent don't jump off Tuncay. I wouldn't advise Rooney to be dropped for Defoe, hes been scoring at will, however under the assumption you were paying full price for both, Defoe was the better option. So it seems you need to keep Rooney, fit in Defoe for Drogba (I assume you have him) ONLY if hes out for sure beyond a week. This should be fine as Defoe's price will only go down after a lack luster performance.

As for Saha, his price keeps shifting from 8.70mil to 10.51mil, same thing happened to torres yestureday between 16-17 mil. If you want Saha get him now. I would love him but I feel the Tuncay bus can work out, you can't give up on it now or you waste the past 2 weeks of nothing he offered you. Once he starts, he'll be scoring goals.

My final answer is go with your gut. I say keep rooney and find a way to slot in Defoe for an injured Drogba, otherwise keep what you have and plug in Spurs midfield and defense.

Good luck!
