Week 15 - Update

First things first - the UK is to be hit by the coldest of cold snaps over the weekend (and beyond) which will include heavy snow fall in the north in particular. When it snows in England there is always risk of postponements, if not for the pitch condition then for the roads/pathways around the ground being unsafe for supporters. Look at Week 18 from last year as an example!

Now those of you who have played YFF before know that if a fixture is postponed, the players you have in that game score ZERO and they also DO NOT get the points when the game is replayed in a later week. At this point I have to stress that there have been NO suggestions from any source that any fixtures are in danger of postponement, but I thought it would be worth adding a weather update to this post just so you're all aware that it's something that you may need to take in to consideration if things deteriorate overnight.

Looking at the fixtures from a geographical point of view, the game most likely to be affected by the weather would be Newcastle v Chelsea and a horse-racing meeting in the area has already been cancelled due to snow fall. I'll be keeping an eye out for any weather/fixture news tonight/tomorrow, so please ensure you check back tomorrow morning just in case there are any last minute announcements!

On to the injury news, and this is what we have at the moment....

-We don't yet know who's set to start upfront for Manchester United, but we do know that Darren Fletcher won't feature as he picked up an injury vs Rangers, and Paul Scholes is a doubt with a groin strain. Despite the lack of confirmation, I'd be very surprised if Wayne Rooney doesn't start.

-Blackburn have a number injury doubts ahead of their trip to Old Trafford with Morten Gamst Pedersen, Benjani, N'Zonzi & Emerton all facing late fitness tests.

-Cesc Fabregas is out for 2 weeks with another hamstring injury, but Andrei Arshavin & Robin Van Persie are back in the Arsenal squad after their midweek rests, and both have a great chance of starting at Aston Villa.

-John Carew is back in the Villa squad and will be involved tomorrow, but that shouldn't affect Gabby Agbonlahor's starting status  (see "Further Updates" section further down this post) . James Collins should also return.

-Van Der Vaart is rated by Harry Redknapp at less than 50-50 after his ankle problem, but there is a chance he'll be ready for Sunday's game vs Liverpool. Jermain Defoe is being tipped to start.

-Mancini has not revealed whether Balotelli, Jo or Adebayor will partner Tevez, but Zabaleta is suspended so he'll be replaced with either Micah Richards or Jerome Boateng.

-Andy Johnson is out for Fulham's home game against Birmingham, which is a shame because represented a great cheap option upfront. With Dembele also out a lot is resting on the shoulders of Clint Dempsey, although Kamara should come in to partner him.

-Mark Noble will be out for up to 6 weeks with a hip injury, which means Obinna should be back on set pieces for West Ham. Carlton Cole could find himself left out after he slagged off the team and the management to the press after last weekend's defeat at Liverpool.

-West Brom are still likely to be without Chris Brunt, which will be a huge blow for them and makes Everton players even more attractive picks.

-Hugo Rodallega and Antolin Alcaraz are suspended for Wigan's trip to Upton Park. Di Santo should come in  upfront.

-According to Ancelotti Lampard, Terry & Zhirkov remain out for Chelsea, Essien is suspended, Bosingwa should start.

-Coloccini, Williamson & Barton are suspended for Newcastle.

-Sunderland have a defensive crisis after Bramble & Michael Turner were ruled out with long term injuries Bruce has also indicated that he'll continue with Wellbeck upfront, so I expect Gyan will be back on the bench as I'm certain Darren Bent will keep his place.

I'll keep adding to this as the day goes on so please keep checking back.

FURTHER UPDATES...
-A few sites are suggesting Seamus Coleman's starting spot is under threat from Jack Rodwell, which is a worry as I currently have Coleman! We're unlikely to have any solid news before the deadline so it'll have to be a gut decision on whether you stick or twist on that one.

-Gabby Agbonlahor has picked up a virus and is now a major doubt for the Arsenal game, a huge blow to him & Villa.

I currently have: Green, Coleman, Kolarov, Bale, Adam, VDV, Cahill, Malouda, Nani, Elmander, Obinna

How's your team coming along?

Cheers,
AM

AM, if there is nay news about Steinsson pls update. I'm actually very surprised that he was benched last week. Not sure for what reason.

I thought he played very well in all 12 EPL games he played.

Anonymous said...

AM, you mentioned with Noble out, Obinna would be in charge of set pieces.

Isn't Scott Parker back this weekend? Wouldn't he be the set pieces take instead?

Assistant Manager said...

Steinsson isn't certain to start as his replacement Ricketts has done a great job. I'd avoid him, there are plenty of other good options, and if you really want a Bolton defender because you think they'll keep a clean sheet then pick Paul Robinson.

Assistant Manager said...

Scott Parker doesn't take set pieces as far as I know. Look at the stats

Successful crosses by Obinna = 23

Successful crosses by Parker = 1

Fellow Fantasy Managers,

I dont trust what Harry says anymore regarding the fitness of VDV! On 2 occasions earlier this season when the Spurs' boss has informed us all he would be unavailable due to injury, VDV has started and proceded to produce fantastic fantasy points. Unlike a lot of you (and AM for that matter), I only hold him at 4 million discount. This makes dropping the Dutchman more of a dilema for me this week, and not only that I have opposition managers hot on my tail in my private group.

What are other managers thinking of doing with VDV? I have no doubt if you hold him at 6.xx you will be happy to take a 0 this week, but what if you hold him at 10.xx?

I like Elmander this week. In my opinion Balotelli will start after his rest, so he's in, which leaves a choice between RVP and Defoe to fill the 3rd strikers spot!

Enjoy that cold weather in England, it's only 30 degrees tomorrow here in Oz ;)

Cheers,

Des Walker

Assistant Manager said...

I agree VDV could very well start, Harry spends most of his time talking rubbish!

Anonymous said...

will kalou play??

@des walker ....... i think VDV will start too.

my current team:

jussi/green
kolarov~ vidic~ salcido~ coleman
nani~ vdv~ holden
elmander~ chamakh~ obinna/sturridge

i think ancelotti might give a chance to sturridge after scoring in the CL but either him or obinna are my hunch this week. i might also revert to 4-4-2 by dropping obinna/sturridge and gong for malouda but i have been burnt couple of times for pickin malouda.

I'd be surprised if they dropped Coleman for Rodwell. From what I've seen he's looked pretty good overall. I would have thought it'd make more sense to put rodwell, instead of heitinga, in the middle with arteta....

alas that's probably why i'm not a epl manager. don't really want to drop coleman at 5.xx though!

Arsenal_Bergkamp said...

AM, Thanks for all the updates.

I am leaning to drop VDV($10) even though I think he will start. Do you think the damage of dropping VDV will be decrease if I replace him with Defoe?

I think Defoe should benefit part of VDV's performance(SC, Assists) if VDV start and perform well. Also, Defoe should be back on PK, which decrease VDV's value and VDV gave the PK to Pavlyuchenko last time.

Great Blog.

Assistant Manager said...

Hi Arsenal_Bergkamp...surely I should be asking you for advice mate, seeing you're top of the overall standings? :) Seriously, fantastic work, you're doing the blog proud!!! :)

At £10m dropping VDV is not such a problem, but anyone still holding him at 6 should continue to do so. As mentioned earlier in the comments section, I think he has a decent chance of starting as he has the extra day of rest (Sunday game).

As for Defoe, I think he'll do well, but he won't be on penalties, he's a useless penalty taker in my opinion, he's missed more than he's scored. I think VDV will continue to take them after he scored the ultimate pressure penalty at The Emirates last weekend.

Cheers!

Need some thoughts on this team

Green
Kolorov Dann Bale at full
VDV Nani Holden Silva
EbanksBlake Elmander Defoe

3 Spurs players against my 'Pool.

Wolves at home to a decimated Sunderland defence I think you have to take a Wolves striker.

Birmingham defence although away against the Fulham attack also makes sense.

I'm unsure about Bale at full price but given his usual points return I have to do it. If Drogs was at 17.93 everyone would think he's a bargain. I could dump Bale, bring in Rooney up front in place of Ebanks and find a cheap defender.

Damn weather also throws a spanner in the works.

My team for now:

Jussi
Coleman Kolarov Evra
VDV Nani Nasri Larsson
Elmander Saha Obinna

Still got 1.94mil extra, but I can't figure out whom to drop. Iwon't drop VDV, but with Coleman and Saha both being doubted to start, it might be a good idea to drop at least one of them. Larsson or Nasri may also go as they both play away from home which decreases their value a bit, and their both above 10mil.
I decided not to BD Tevez last Sunday and I quite regret it now, because I don't have a premium striker at all, and my 3 stikers are sort of longshots. Having said that, I believe stikers haven't been the strongest link in this fantasy season so far, and although Tevez scored well last weekend, he's far from stable.

So my questions to Nik and fellow followers are:
Should I keep Larsson and Nasri?
What do you believe are Coleman's and Saha's chances of starting the match?
Where can I use my extra funds to upgrade (it looks like a pretty weak team to me...)?
Any other advices?

@NG, are you thinking of droping him due to injury? if so heres the lates news on him:

Brucey has mentioned he expects Gyan to play

http://www.ghanasoccernet.com/2010/11/sunderland-striker-gyan-set-for-injury-return/

also SFC official website have stated he is expected to play

"
John Mensah is expected to make the squad following a shoulder problem, while Asamoah Gyan is also available."

defenders Michael Turner and Titus Bramble (both knee). They join Fraizer Campbell (knee), Matt Kilgallon (back) and Trevor Carson (shoulder) on the injury list.

at 6 he's probably worth keeping.

Hope this helps??

Good luck!

VDV/Holden/Lee Chung-Yong/Nasri/Nani
Drogba/Hernandez

Usually play 4-3-4 with top heavy teams, not interestest in making the back stronger, just the mid or strikers pls!

My current team:

Green
Kolarov - Coleman - Jacobsen
VDV - Nasri - Nani - Cahill - Silva
Elmander - Tevez

For once i'm pretty happy with my midfield, all players who are capable of scoring big (as long as the good silva turns up). i was wary of green and jacobsen in defence but they are cheap, and wigan are without some key attacking players and points/goal scorers, so they have a decent chance of a clean sheet. The rest speak for themselves I think

Ossington Mental Youth said...

Thanks Anonymous 635 -
I never put much money in defense as i rarely (outside of Bale and other rare examples) find they rack points, as a result ill usually grab dudes that dont play (no loss of points) or play for defense for teams that rarely lose (in comparison to others)

As for Hernandez, so tough to say whos playing as an effective striker these days for those guys, so frustrating.

Got rid of Hernandez and put in Gyan, also right of Lee and put in Silva

Salcido? Really? I thought he'd be good and had him for his first week but Fulham are terrible this season. Salcido only gets points when he gets assists and he's only had 2 in 10 games. If you can find someone else i'd change him. Someone mentioned Jacobsen, and I think thats a sound shout at home to a wigan team who are a pile of poo this season

Anonymous said...

Birmingham had 1 SOT against a weakened Chelsea defence, Alex was far from his best, No Essien or Zhirkov. I'm ready to gamble on Fulham keeping a CS.

kwyjibo said...

@joshtottenham - What worries me is that with Wellbeck/Bent fit, Gyan's likely not going to get regular starts. I'm still reluctant to lose the 5m discount, but he may have to go...

Currently:

Jussi
Boateng-Kolarov-Vidic
Adam-VdV-Nani-Milijas
Gyan-Elmander-Tevez

Thinking of:
Jussi
(PRobinson)-Kolarov-(Rafael)
Adam-VdV-Nani-(Cahill)-(Silva)
Elmander-Tevez

I have both Elmander/Tevez at BD prices.

Which team do you like?

Mell fantasyonthego said...

Defoe is good if he plays, Obinna had a lot of SOT but no goals, Carroll heads against anyone. Current form shows Carroll is the best man. I also think VDV should play after a midweek rest. Without Yayga, I fancy Nzog to cause havoc at West Ham. Same with Drogba, finger crosses

Just to say, it's been snowing pretty heavily up here in Newcastle for the last few hours (it's 01.50 now) although seems to have stopped now. Even the A1 was 20mph max, although that could be the worst of it over, who knows. The town centre will get the most attention for clearing but I certainly wouldn't be 100% sure the match is on.
The fact that the match isn't until Sunday may play in its favour but as of right now it doesn't look great. I definitely wouldn't load up on Chelsea players that's for sure.

Especially as Newcastle will woop their asses anyway.

kwyjibo said...

Well, I did it...dropped Gyan and the 5m discount. Now watch him play and score 30 points...

In general, with Welbeck and Bent, the front line at Sunderland is pretty crowded. He's never really guaranteed to start, so that's why I made the decision.

VdV stays whether he plays or not...that 8m discount is far too valuable in his case, considering how well he scores. He only needs 6 points to make back his value.

Jo or Di Santo? when balotelli set on bench can it be jo to perform?

Anonymous said...

In the end I'm going with:

Jussi
Coleman Kolarov Evra
VDV Nani Nasri Dempsey
Obinna Saha Elmander

Elmander and Evra provided me with huge points last weekend, so I hope they continue their form. Evra doesn't score or assist a lot, so after he DID score it's hard to believe he'd do it today as well, but at least he has a good chance of a CS, even if ManU's defence haven't been at their best this season.
Kolarov and Nani shouldn't be explained, while VDV is kept hoping he at least returns next weekend. Jussi nearly always gets positive points, and is playing anyway against B'pool lacking Harewood, at home. Obinna shoots a lot and if he ever gets a goal, it should be home to wigan, while Nasri stays in my team until Fabregas returns, as he should take almost every set piece and is on a fantastic form overall.
Coleman, Saha and Dempsey are the picks that worry me. Coleman is cheap so I've decided to keep him until I'm sure he's not starting regularly. Every preview I read for the Everton v West Brom match suggets that Saha will start ahead of Yakubu and Beckford, and if he does I think he's the best value in his price range. Having said that, the doubt over his status concerns me deeply, so I won't be calm until I see his name on Everton's line-up (and will be very angry if I don't).
Dempsey was brought in this morning instead of Larsson. In the last few games He has been averaging more than Larsson, so I didn't see why I should keep the extra 2mil in my bank and go with the latter. What worries me is that Dempsey almost never scores as high as his price, and has to score a goal in order to do it. Brum has a leaky defence, but has shut out both Chelsea and ManCity the last couple of weeks, so it's a great concern.

Any advices?
