Week 17 - Player Picks
First things first...we had a couple of points adjustments yesterday afternoon but I'm confident they'll be the last we see this week, so I'll be preparing the Blog Cup Results tomorrow morning - make sure you check back!
Now, it's still very cold here in the UK, but the good news is the snow has passed so we should have a full programme of fixtures in Week 17. And what an interesting programme it should be, with 4 of the Top 5 locking horns - Manchester United v Arsenal & Tottenham v Chelsea.
None of the top teams have been able to take control of this title race as yet - Chelsea threatened to run away with it early on but have faltered badly in the past month, Man Utd are undefeated without playing that well, Arsenal are playing well but look defensively fragile, and Spurs are only outsiders. The team that could profit most this weekend are Manchester City, who travel to rock bottom West Ham.
Let's take a full look at the fixtures...
Stand-Out
MANCHESTER CITY @ West Ham
Despite missing a certain Mr Tevez due to suspension I still feel this is the real stand-out game of the weekend and a certain win for the away side. West Ham briefly rallied with two wins in a few days last week, but they were poor again at Sunderland and I just think City will have far too much quality for them.
Should Win
EVERTON v Wigan
BOLTON v Blackburn
STOKE v Blackpool
LIVERPOOL @ Newcastle
Everton let us all down against West Brom in Week 15, but I can't see the same thing happening at home to Wigan after the boost of a well deserved point at Stamford Bridge last weekend. Bolton are a very decent side at the Reebok and should have too much for Blackburn (although I'm sticking with Robbo!) and Stoke are in good form so should edge out an open Blackpool side.
Liverpool are starting to hit their stride face a shell-shocked Newcastle, so I see an away win. Hughton's sacking was completely unfair, the players are unhappy and they'll hardly be overjoyed by the news that the uninspiring Alan Pardew will take his place. The whole thing stinks and after 18 months of staying out of things (which coincided with some actual stability), Mike Ashley has once again turned the club in to a laughing stock.
Draws/Close
Manchester United v Arsenal
Tottenham v Chelsea
Fulham v Sunderland
Aston Villa v West Brom
Wolves v Birmingham
Half the fixtures are really tough to call this weekend, including the two big games. I think both Manchester United v Arsenal and Spurs v Chelsea will end in score draws, but reckon we'll see really entertaining battles as all four sides will feel they can win and will know what a huge result a win would be.
Fulham v Sunderland has 1-1 draw written all over it, and we finish with two Midlands derbies - Aston Villa v West Brom and Wolves v Birmingham. All four are bitter rivals, the atmosphere will be feisty and both games could go either way. Again, I'm predicting score draws.
KEEPERS
Jaaskalainen
Howard
Friedel
As I said last week, if you have a solid keeper at a big discount then it certainly seems success comes from sticking with them no-matter the fixture. I'll be doing exactly that by staying with Paul Robinson for the foreseeable future, but if you're looking to buy at full price then then three men above are my choices for Week 17.
Blackburn are hardly prolific scorers, especially away from home, so I fancy a Bolton clean sheet and good points for Jaaskalainen. I mentioned Everton's rotten performance at West Brom - which was the week many of us took a -12 point hammering from Tim Howard - but I'm tipping the American stopper to have a better week this time around and he's priced below £5m. An another American, Brad Friedel, is still a top keeper and costs under £7m for the first time ever, so he's definitely worth thinking about if you fancy Villa to improve.
DEFENDERS
Bale
Baines
Kompany
Coleman
Toure/Lescott
Bosingwa Injured
Knight
Shawcross
Konchesky
Richards
Dann
Enrique
Tamas
Elokobi
Pantsil
P.Robinson
A few new names this week as some of the smaller teams have clean sheet chances which offers some good value defenders. At the other end of the scale, Bale will be facing the fairly useless Paulo Ferreria after Bosingwa was ruled out with an injury & Leighton Baines has been performing well , has a clean sheet chance & will be on set pieces in Arteta's absence. If you can't afford Baines then Seamus Coleman could be the answer - he's back in the team & was named as the clubs Player of the Month award for November.
It's a bit of a lottery when it comes to predicting Man City's back four this weekend - Kolarov is suspended Boateng seems out of favour for some reason & Toure is an injury doubt. The back four could be Richards, Kompany, Lescott, Zabaletta, although if Toure makes it then Lescott could move to left fullback with Zabaleta or Richards at right-back. We'll need to wait for team news, but Richards is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch if he's set to play, priced at just £6m.
Knight, Konchesky, Dann, Shawcross & Enrique are all priced between £6-£8m and I feel all are really good options this week for clean sheet chances or attacking points, or a combination of both for Bolton, Liverpool, Birmingham, Stoke & Newcastle respectively. Out of the five I've got a bit of a hunch that Ryan Shawcross may pop up with a goal against Blackpool, but unfortunately I can't fit him in my team this week.
If you're looking to fill a space from the very bottom of the price scale then we have West Brom's Tamas at 5.4 if you fancy West Brom to keep Villa at bay, Wolves' Elokobi who is set to continue in defence and priced under 5, a previous favourite from two seasons ago, Fulham's John Pantsil, back in at right full-back and costing 5.4 & finally Bolton's Paul Robinson, under £5m & with a decent chance of a clean sheet for Bolton
MIDFIELDERS
Etherington
Silva
Cahill
Brunt
Downing/A.Young
Nani
Milijas
Meireles
Nasri
Adam
Dempsey
Malouda
Albrighton
Barton
Pennant
Gardner
Jarvis
Rodwell
Matty Etherington is playing the best football of his career at the moment and should get plenty of point scoring opportunities versus a Blackpool side who only know how to attack. He's pricey, but tempting nonetheless. One day soon the improving David Silva will score 20+ & he won't get many better chances than at West Ham. Tevez's absence may actually help him as he'll be expected to provide the creative spark, and he's a bargain. Tim Cahill is essentially playing as a centre forward nowadays and is a constant goal threat, while Chris Brunt seems to be over his groin injury and will be on all set pieces at a fragile Aston Villa.
Speaking of Villa, I still expect their midfield to score well. Downing has been the most consistent this season, Young is likely to be on penalties, the two of them will share set pieces, and Mark Albrighton is a slightly cheaper option who often pops up in the box to notch a goal. I wouldn't pay full-price for Nani but if you hold him at discount then hang on to him vs Arsenal, Milijas will shoot all day & Meireles should continue on set pieces, although reports today suggests Gerrard could be back soon, possibly on the bench at Newcastle.
It's difficult to decide on Nasri - he's in fantastic form and scored again last night, but United away is tough. Like Nani I don't think he's worth full-price this week, but if you have him around 10-11 (or cheaper) then it''s really tempting to hang on to him. Adam is up at £9m nowadays but he's due a free-kick or penalty soon & Stoke do concede a lot of fouls, Dempsey is Fulham's biggest goal threat in much the same way as Cahill is for Everton, while Malouda is pricey but also quality & we all know Spurs can't defend, so he could be a good (slightly risky) pick.
Joey Barton screwed a fair few managers over last weekend after withdrawing from the Newcastle squad with an unreported injury suffered in training, but he's due to be back this weekend. Pennant also missed out last weekend but he's expected to return & like Barton, he'll get his fair share of set pieces. Craig Gardner is having a cracking season for Birmingham & faces Wolves, Matt Jarvis is another who continues to impress & Jack Rodwell is likely to start after a fine performance at Stamford Bridge last weekend - a fantastic filler option at under 3.5
STRIKERS
Balotelli
Elmander
Torres
K.Jones
K.Davies
Rooney
Agbonlahor
Gyan
Defoe
Drogba
Carroll
Odemwingie
Obinna
Beckford
Mario Balotelli could score a hat-trick at West Ham, or he could get sent off, or he could do both. He's unpredictable but he's also extremely talented, and he should be in your team for Week 17, whether you grabbed him at 5 or must now pay 8. Next is Johan Elmander, who is in great form & has a nice easy fixture, and I reckon Torres must fancy his chances to score at Newcastle (who as I write this have just confirmed Alan Pardew as manager on a 5-Year deal - mental). Kenwyne Jones is another who is due a goal and will get plenty of chances against Blackpool.
If you can't afford Elmander then penalty taker Kevin Davies is the alternative, Wayne Rooney will score soon and Arsenal can't defend, so it could be this week, while Gabby Agbonlahor looked rusty against Liverpool but can't be ignored at his current price of 7ish. Gyan is my pick of the Sunderland strikers after playing really well vs West Ham, while Defoe & Drogba will face-off at White Hart Lane where there will be goals!
I've already mentioned that I think Newcastle will lose, but that doesn't mean Andy Carroll won't be a handful and I'm sure Odemwingie will cause the Villa defence plenty of problems. Obinna is always good for a few points even in tough home games, and the final option is Jermaine Beckford - he's struggled a bit so far but at least he's scored a couple of goals, unlike Saha & Yakubu.
That's it - all analysis done!
My own team looks the same as it did a few days ago as I plan to have a look at it properly tomorrow night, but here it is at the moment:
Robinson, Kolarov, Bale, Baines, VDV, Silva, Meireles, Brunt, Etherington, Elmander, Balotelli
I actually quite like it, although Meireles will possibly go if Gerrard is set to start at Newcastle (as he'll lose set pieces), and I'd have around £9m to replace him. The suspended Kolarov stays @ 4.4 for a one week zero, I'm obviously hoping VDV returns and I'm going to stick with Robbo in goal for a while to see how that works out. Balotelli, Elmander, Silva, Baines & Bale will stay too but I may change a few things to get a Villa player in. I'm still holding a discounted Nasri behind the scenes, but don't think I can fit him in anywhere.
As always, please vote in the poll:

Completely baffled as to what to do with Nasri. Will probably drop him, but haven't been able to pull the trigger YET.
Still holding Kyrgiakos and Meireles from Monday night. What are the chances of a total Toon meltdown this weekend?
As of now i've got:
Howard,
Kolarov (at 4.4), Huth, Baines,
Brunt, Larsson, A.Young, Etherington,
Balotelli, Agbonlahor, Saha
I wanted another City player in MF but i'm just happy with my midfield for now.
What do you think?
I believe K.Davies is suspended and i think if Citeh keep a CS Zabaleta will score the highest points, he's putting SOT, especially when playing left back like he'll be doing this weekend.
Ebi
Hey Ebi - Kevin Davies isn't suspended. I was confused too as Yahoo say he now has 5 Yellow Cards in the league but some investigation shows he actually picked up two bookings in the Carling Cup and served a suspension back in October.
As for Zab, I felt he was too expensive, but wouldn't argue with anyone who picked him :)
Villa are going through a bad period. I wouldn't go near their players for this week. Just my opinion though. Later, and take it easy.

Naive question below...
'If you want to take advantage of the barn door do you sell and then buy without actually confirming?'
Thanks guys
You need to confirm/save your changes to take advantage of the barndoor
AM, you think its time to give up on Boateng (missed out on Kolorov and was nice having a sub 5 Man City defender)
i think i gonna stick with nasri although im a united fan.
his on form right now.

Wow, First time not near AM, but this is what I'm rolling so far:
Green
V. Kompany
A. Kolarov
J. Bosingwa
Míchel Salgado
S. Hunt
C. Gardner
R. Meireles
J. Elmander
D. Welbeck
K. Doyle
Comments appreciated!
Kevin Davies served his 5 YCs suspension in September against Burnley in a Carling Cup tie. Prior to his YC last weekend for a long long time, he picked up the 5 YCs in consecutive games! (4 EPL, 1 Carling Cup)
Now that he had 1 last weekend, he could be on a streak on YCs again! Personally, I think I'll avoid picking him... :-P
The points adjustment dropped me by 3 points to 89, which I'm pretty sure has sealed my blog cup fate.
But, I'm feeling ok about the coming week, even with 2 potential zeros, with:
Hart
Kol(@4.43)-Baines-Kompany
VdV(@6.14)-Silva-Adam-Etherington-Meireles
Balotelli-Odemwingie
Still may make a couple of changes. I'm not sure about keeping Meireles, and Adam isn't as appealing at 9 as he was at 5.40. We'll see...
102pts moved me to 402th! My highest position to date!
Currently at:
Fabianski (long term @6mil)
Bale, Coleman, Kolarov
Downing, Ethrington, Nasri, VDV, Pires
Torres, Balotelli
Really, really like the team, maybe thats a bad omen, but will most likely stick to this until team news friday
Good luck!

@MPFC: Thats the big question right now, keep Nasri @11mil or not? My thinking is that Nasri probably won't do to much next week even with a goal, but the problem is he is really on form. He showed that again in the CL tonight. Arsenal play @Utd, Stoke, Chelsea, looks tough but maybe Nasri is the new go to guy to pull Arsenal out of the flames. For me I will keep him one more week, if he can't cut it against Utd then he may not be able to on Chelsea (who Arsenal already lost to)
@FLS: Robert Green is going to get shelled by Balotelli, does that mean lots of saves? Probably, but I would be scared s**tless to have Green facing Citeh's attack. Otherwise looks good, but I feel you could make some more changes. Meirales may have to go if Gerrard's back, he'll resume FK's. Salgado is away to a good Bolton side, won't be CS there. Kompany has done pretty good, but I feel hes too expenisve, Boateng is cheap if you still want a Citeh defender.
Good luck
Dropping Nasri is a big tisk, he can score against anyone at the moment.
Think I'll have to keep him and Pederson in their current form but maybe change pederson for etherington.
AM...will Jo pair up with Balotelli this week, since Tevez is suspended?
no love for Nani even with tough match-ups? He's been racking up a lot of phantom points even when he played shite, no?
kik
@ Kellz - Thanks for the advice, probably going Friedel / Balotelli instead.
Any news on Barton? I can't seem to find any news on him. Sure there's off the pitch drama but LIV have been poor on the road this year and Barton has been real consistent.
Also, here's another cheapie defender to consider: Ricketts (BOL) 6.32
Good luck all
TJ
What about Jo? With Tevez suspended, does he partner Balotelli? If so he could hardly not return his value (4.0) against West Ham.
I dropped Nasri, which i think is a mistake. You'd play Nani and Malouda, home or away, against any opposition. So why drop Nasri?
Ebi
Any news on Boateng. Should I continue to naively hold onto him at 4.5 or is his time in Man City done?
help pls...\m/
1)
silva - rooney
or
downing - k.jones..
2)
keep nasri?
-lost duties to other players and chance to score against manutd quite low...

@ZuBaR
There is no need to keep PRobbo as T.Howard (i would be surprice if he concede and more than surprise if he concede more than 1) is under 5.
Kolarov is suspended so i guess that yuou have him at 4.4.
Koscielny will propable be carded + not a big chance of a clean sheet so i advice you to go with P.Robinson (Bolton's def) or Pantsil.
Rooney is some mistery for me (personally i avoid him, better get nani if you want ManUtd player).
Torres might be rubbish as he has every reason to be wild-eyed but Elmander looks like good pick in forward.
I'm quite uncertain, especially in defence. It looks like:
Howard
Robinson Coleman Komapny
Adam Etherington Downing Meireles Dempsey
Balotelli Elmander
with 2 points in bank. Any ideas where to improve?
Pardew confirmed with 5.5 yr contract. man alive ! . mike ashley has got to be a mackem fan ! .
back to the post. a great one as usual. gotta disagree slightly about bolton's clean sheet chances. blackburn (bizarrely i know) have the joint best record on " fail to scores", just 2 along with man u & ars.
http://www.soccerstats.com/scoring.asp?league=england
and only wolves have a worse record for clean sheets that bolton. ( just 1 on 1st day of season ) .
also hansen pointed out on motd last sat that bolton's defending was abysmal.
& bolton have beat bl'burn at the reebok since 1998.
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_6560544,00.html
they're certainly due a win and a few of my bolton friends would love that, but they are not confident at all about the clean sheet.
S.P.
correction - that should be- bolton have NOT beat bl'burn at the reebok since 1998.
S.P.
Nasri is an interesting one. He only gets points for goals...but he is scoring a lot of goals. I think I'll keep him for now, but I don't see him as a Malouda or Nani type that will get you 8-10 regardless of scoring. He should be, but isnt. Makes him more difficult to hold in harder games, because its harder to beat 3 players and score than it is to make a few decent crosses and maybe a long shot on target.
Any Arsenal fans, is Nasri just a poor free kick taker? Other players get 5+ points out of taking kicks a game, Nasri seems to get 0, suggesting his corners/wide ones never reach Arse players, and shots aren't on target.
POST UPDATED - ALL ANALYSIS COMPLETE
Blog Cup results to follow this afternoon...
@Josh
Nasri isn't really bad at set pieces, but from some reason Arshavin and Wilshere are taking all the corners for Arsenal, while there aren't many free kicks in a game and the ones he take are not ALWAYS accurate, even if they are quite good. He's not a classical winger like Nani or Malouda - he's more fitted to the playmaker role, actually - so the points from him are certain by no means. Yet, I believe that he's on a great scoring form and might score vs ManU, and he is usually very active in the "big" games rather than in the less "important" ones. I'm keeping him @11, at least until Fabregas returns.
SF
If Arsenal scores Nasri will be involved, i also think Wenger wants Nasri around the box that's why he's no longer on Corners and 'indirect free kicks'.
This week i even prefer Cahill to Nasri but i can't fit either as i think i've got better options elsewhere.
Ebi
I know it's not for a few weeks, but I had forgotten Cahill is eventually going to leave for the Asian Cup in January...

TheC1
howard
bale coleman richards
rodwell cahill silva meireless etherington
torres balotelli
this is my team.
confused abt richards though.
is tevez suspended??
yes tevez is suspended
My Team:
P. Robinson (@3.78)
Coleman, Baines, P. Robinson
Meireles (@6.65), Nasri (@12.21), Cahill, Etherington, Silva
Balotelli (@5.7), Elmander
Thoughts?
I'm tempted to switch PRob to Howard and downgrade Nasri
Wow it's great to finally be acknowledged as one of the top 50 after 3/4 seasons playing YFF. To be honest, I didn't take all of AM's advices, I took many risks this season. Some paid off, and some didn't. Though AM did help me alot in my selection!
My current team after BD
[PRob]
Kolarov Skrtel [Konchesky]
Brunt MGP Etherington [Tchoyi]
Balotelli Odemwingie [Torres]
My unsaved team:
[Howard]
Kolarov Skrtel [Shawcross/Konchesky]
Brunt MGP Etherington [Cahill]
Balotelli Odemwingie [K.Davies]
I have PRob at a huge discount, like many others, but I have a feeling PRob will let in a few to Bolton. I think Howard's a safer bet.
Kolarov stays for the 0. NUF aren't that bad at scoring, and having both Skrtel and Konchesky would be putting too many eggs in one basket. Nevertheless, Shawcross only had 1 SOT this whole season, he's no longer the Shawcross he was last season. I highly doubt he'll get a CS anyway.
I have Brunt, MGP and Eth at discounts. MGP's next 4 games after @Bolton are pretty easy. Super Mario is a must-have with Carlitos out. K.Davies is my wild guess, might pop up with a brace, or a YC. It seems like most of the people here are waiting for Torres to explode and pick him up on the BD.

Ahhh chris Brunt be healthy

there is nothing elite about the tag, it's just to showing you're a blog reader, anyone can add it!

p robinson
richards baines coleman
nasri meireles etherington silva
balotelli elmander fuller
Comments appreciated!

ANY NEWS ON NOLAN ???
I hear what you're sayng on keeping a cheap keeper am, especially when you look at robinsons fixtures after this week and his price has gone to 8.64
But
There is a massive chance of him getting a heavy minus score this week with your elmander banging them in against him and he'll be pickable at a 5ish price next week.
Just sayin
help please..
albrighton + kompany

silva + baines

GENIUS-
Friedel
Kolarov/Skrtel/Kompany/Shawcross
Silva/Nasri/Cahill
Drogba/Balotelli/RVP
Don't sleep on Robin. He likes playing against the big teams. will he start? I guess so. I could lose Skrtel. Any suggestions?
This is going to be really hard. I'm already taking a 0 from Kolarov, and a possible -ve from Howard. Now Brunt and Odemwingie are doubtful. I'm going to wait for the news before making changes to Brunt and Odemwingie.

PLEASE COMMENT! jasskelainen, bale,coleman,huth,malouda,brunt(not sure),silva, nasri,ballotelli,carroll, chamakh
@jfk0124 u shuld either keep berba or nani.u shuld switch on nasri for nani
PLEASE COMMENT! jasskelainen, bale,coleman,huth,malouda,brunt(not sure),silva, nasri,ballotelli,carroll, chamakh
jfk0124: wow... u keep quite some players there, your week16 must have been a teribble with boateng, vdv, nani, barton, berba all not playing! i think berba won't perform against ars, he practically did nothing in CL.
those who doesn't keep players would definitely gain some ground last week.
anom 8.31: doesn't like malouda and chamakh against top5 teams.
i need 20 ppl that want to hear my prediction that 100% COMFIRM!!!.. raise u hand!!
GENIUS-
Going away for weekend from now which means no more FF for me from now but that's a good thing as I have spent too much time looking at my team over the past month going from c400 to c1500 in that time (although somehow hanging on in the blog cup!)
Stuck on
Cech (@11 is a season keeper for me and I'll take the rough with the smooth!)
Bale Kolarov (barring injury I will have them all season too) Coleman
Dunn Gardner Pennant (can't afford Eth) AYoung
Elm Ballotelli KJones
I don't like it, but I'm sticking with it
Thanks for the excellent blog AM, loving the format, and good luck to all this week!!
Downing or elmander?
Pls help
I've got a problem. I have arshavin with 2mil discount, nasri with 2, vdv with 6, kolarov with 4, baloteli with 3, bale with 2.... What should i do?
