Week 9 - Player Picks

It's been a crazy busy week with work, plus we've had the Rooney news, calculation of the Blog Cup results and Champions League games to watch (Spurs still making me laugh and cry in equal measure), so due to a time shortage I'm going to have to jump straight in with a look at the Week 9 fixtures.

The stand-out fixture by a million miles is Chelsea at home to Wolves. I could see a bit of a kicking here and it isn't going to get any easier for Mick McCarthy's men going forward. My good buddy Luke (Wolves fan) revealed that Wolves' next 3 league fixtures (after Chelsea) are Man City, @Man Utd, Arsenal....ouch!

Liverpool have been shocking so far but Blackburn travel to Anfield without the suspended Samba and I've just got a feeling that it could be time for Torres to breakout of his rut. Everton are vastly improved but I would still hope that Tottenham could beat them at White Hart Lane (although it will be tight) and I expect Manchester United to go to Stoke and get their first away win of the season - they always seem to silence their doubters when their backs are against the wall.

I also fancy Birmingham to scrape a win at home to Blackpool - it's pretty much a must win game for the boys in blue after a torrid start - although a draw wouldn't be a shock. Same story a Upton Park - West Ham are just about favourites but Newcastle are totally unpredictable, and I reckon West Brom will continue their fine start with another 3 points vs Fulham. Home advantage in tight matches is often the deciding factor.

Saying that - Wigan v Bolton, Sunderland v Aston Villa and the big game of the weekend Manchester City vs Arsenal all look like score draws to me, although with Fabregas returning you wouldn't discount Arsenal causing an upset (am I really referring to City losing to the Gunners as an upset? Maybe the balance is shifting...)

OK that's the fixtures, time for my player picks (remembering that we still have to wait for the injury fall-out from European games)

KEEPERS
Reina
Foster
Carson
Green
Kirkland

Pepe Reina @ 7.2 is probably the lowest price I've ever seen him at. Yes Liverpool are a bit rubbish, but Blackburn are hardly the most attacking team in the league so a clean sheet is possible. Birmingham will be aiming to keep out Blackpool and Ben Foster has been playing well so is a decent option, as is Scott Carson with a home game vs Fulham.

I wouldn't have been recommending Rob Green a month ago, but his form has improved greatly and Newcastle are struggling a bit at the moment so @ £5m he could be worth a punt. A lot of people have been taking the zero for Kirkland since he was dropped in Week 3, but this week he will play; Al-Habsi can't play against his parent club Bolton.

Kirk costs just 1.00 but he averages -13! Are you taking the risk to free up funds elsewhere?

DEFENDERS
Bale
Zhirkov
Bosingwa/Ferreira
Boateng
Hutton
Jacobsen
Salcido
Coleman
Konchesky
Squillaci
Dann/Carr
Jara
Stam

After brief temptations to drop him 2 weeks ago I'm likely to keep Bale for the long haul now; guaranteed points scorers are too hard to come by (update: and now a sensational hat-trick in the San Siro!). You may be surprised to see Zhirkov second on the list but after a fine performance in the Champions League I reckon he could find himself starting either at left back or in midfield if Ancelotti decides to rest players vs Wolves - he'd be the bargain of the week @ 4.22.

The Bosingwa/Ferreira conundrum is currently unknown, although Paulo got 90 minutes in Moscow so it could be Jose's turn. Hutton is a great alternative if you can't stretch to Bale, Boateng is too cheap to resist (provided he's recovered from his knock suffered at Blackpool) and Jacobsen is another sub-5 defender guaranteed to start and with a decent chance of a clean-sheet.

Salcido, Konchesky & Coleman are all priced a shade over 7 and should get forward plenty (especially thr Everton man out on the right wing). Squillaci is holding the Arsenal defence together at the moment, Dann or Carr could cover the potential Birmingham clean sheet at home to Blackpool while Jara & Stam have home games and offer alternatives if you're looking to pick a defender not many other managers will go for.

MIDFIELDERS
Malouda
Van Der Vaart
Gerrard
Nani
Adam
Silva/AJ
N'Zogbia
Brunt
Larsson/Gardner
Pennant
Essien
Holden
Henderson
Meireles
Reo-Coker

Malouda has been a bit up and down recently but he's still the joint top scorer in the league so it would be crazy to ignore him at home to Wolves. However, as mentioned earlier Zhirkov is a possible player to replace him if Ancelotti wants to rest a player who has already played 15 games for club and country this season. Lets hope we get a nice and helpful press conference this Friday!

Van Der Vaart need no introduction, Nani is in fine form (scoring again last night) and Gerrard will be heart of everything good Liverpool do vs Blackburn (assuming they do something good). Charlie Adam has proved himself a season-keeper no matter the fixture, and assuming Mancini reverts to 4-5-1 vs Arsenal (and I'm sure he will) then it'll be a straight fight between Silva & AJ. Watch to see who plays in the Europa Cup because the guy on the bench will probably start at the weekend.

N'Zogbia hit form vs Newcastle and he'll be looking to continue you this at home to Bolton, West Brojm's Chris Brunt is another set piece taker, as is Larsson for Birmingham and Pennant will share them (with Etherington) for Stoke. I thought Gardner had completed his suspension but I was wrong, he has one game left, so he's been removed from the list above.

We still don't have news on Lampard but if he's out then Essien continues to be a good pick in home games, Stuart Holden is consistent and Henderson has been grabbing some useful points for Sunderland, taking the occasional set piece. Meireles clearly likes to shoot and was the only player I saw trying to make something happen for Liverpool at Everton, and Reo-Coker is a great filler option under £3m if you want to save some cash to bring in the bigger names.

STRIKERS
Drogba/Anelka/Kalou
Tevez
Obinna/Piquionne
Odemwingie (*major injury doubt)
Torres
Berbatov
K.Jones
Bent
Chamakh
Hernandez
Zigic

I read in the Metro newspaper this morning that Drogba will be back to face Wolves - confirmed by Ancelotti - so if you dropped him last week you need to decide whether to spend £24m on him or bring in Anelka. Mind you, could Anelka be rested now Kalou is back? At the moment we don't know so we'll all be waiting on the press conference praying he names his starting XI.

Tevez is in fantastic form (even if both his goals should've been disallowed last weekend for offside/a foul) and Arsenal have been a bit leaky, so he's the next premium striker in line, I've mentioned my Torres hunch (although it's unlikely I'll pick him) and you have some nicely priced forward options with a chance of a goal - Obinna, Piquionne & Odemwingie (Update: Odemwingie possibly out due to injury).

Berbatov will continue to lead the line after the Rooney revelations/injury while Kenwyne Jones will be looking to cause United some further defensive headaches, Darren Bent will want to get back on the goal-trail vs Villa, Chamakh is starting to find his feet in England (at least when he tries to stay on them), Hernandez could partner Berbatov after his goal vs West Brom and the man-mountain Zigic will be hoping to keep his place for Birmingham.

That's it for another week...I'm not 100% deciding on my team until we hear from Ancelotti on Friday, because news on Drogba/Anelka/Zhirkov/Malouda/Kalou/Ferreira/Bosingwa is going to impact hugely on my final XI. I'm sure it's the same for you guys too so I'll post an injury/team news update on Friday that will hopefully clarify everything!

Update: After a play around with possible combinations, I've reckon if Silva is rested tonight, Zhirkov is set to start and Drogba is definitely back then I may do something like this:

Kirkland, Boateng, Zhirkov, Bale, Adam, Silva, N'Zogbia, Nani, Van Der Vaart, Obinna, Drogba

I'd be happy with that, but lets wait and see!

Anyway, please remember to vote in the Week 9 Poll:
http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/505502

Please let me know how you're team is shaping up! Are you planning on splashing out £24m for Drogba if he's fit? Do you feel I've missed anyone from the lists above? Who's your hunch for Week 9?

Cheers,
AM

  2. Team ATM:

    Kirk,
    Bale, Boateng, Jacobsen,
    Malouda, Nani, VDV, Meriales, Silva,
    Drogba, Obinna

Quite happy with it, but if Zhyrkov is starting I will put him in for one of Jacobsen or Boateng. Meriales has been pretty consistent for 5.99mil and Silva was BD only because of his price raise, and I feel he'll contribute more than Reo or Etuhu.

If I were to change, I'd probably drop Nani to Brunt, and Kirk to Foster. My BD radar is Reina and Torres. I am reluctant to pick either this week because of their form. Reaina only has 3pts this year and Torres hasn't getten his killing edge back, although he could use some better delivery.

    Good luck guys!

  3. Good team Kellz. Haven't seen much of West Ham this season so I can't really comment on Obinna, but looks like you've got some good balance.

    I've got:

    Kirk,
    Bale, Boateng, Squillaci
    Malouda, Adam, VDV, Nani, Holden
    Carroll, Drogba

I'm thinking of dropping Squillaci, Holden, and Carroll for Odemwingie, Jacobsen (or Zhirkov), and Obi Mikel.

Not sure about the combination but I'm definitely planning on dropping Squillaci for sure.

    Thanks for the post AM!

@lfcinpa: like ur MF selection..hope it may return ur points well

  15. @anonymous 10:48pm - great grasp of sarcasm! (by the way, that was sarcasm too if you hadn't noticed!)

I'm going for a slightly different set up this week:

    Kirkland
    Boateng - ACole - Bale - Jacobsen
    VDV - Adam - Barton
    Carroll - Tevez - Bent

I'm hoping that my team selection will be slightly different to others so that if the right players perform, it could shoot me up the tables! I need it cos i'm currently 3,708th when last season I was mostly between 750 and 2,000 the whole season!

Unfortunately, I dropped Bale a few weeks ago so I'm sitting on cole and bale at a grand total of, wait for it...29.48! The most i've ever spent on 2 defenders! But, they both have winnable home games, if chelsea concede i'll be very surprised, and it looks like bale and Van der Vaart are the only 2 spurs players who care that they are on the pitch at present so i'm expecting a big week from both of them! i've gone with Tevez as my gut choice, which was tough as a massive Arsenal fan, but 7 goals in 8 games so far cannot be ignored. Plus, he tends to score against big teams, and I know that he could quite easily score 2 or 3, or at least have half a dozen SOTs etc. i think Darren Bent, now he is fit, is going to start recreating his form from the beginning of the season when he scored 5 goals in 7 games, and i think he could quite easily get a goal against villa (possibly penalty too!)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just took in an 8 goal haul in Fantasy Champions League!!! Woo hoo!

Now if only I could have a haul like that in YFF...a lot of decisions to make this week. Can Bale do an encore on Saturday?

    ReplyDelete
  17. will gardner play? he can't, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I like my current team alot, it all depends on what Carlo announces on Friday though in his press conference.

I do have one massive area of doubt....

    Kirkland
    Bosingwa, Zhirkov, Bale
Van der Vaart, Brunt, Hleb, Silva
    Tevez, Drogba, Obinna

.... No, it's not Kirkland. Carlos Tevez! I'm finding that game difficult to predict.

Either City will sit back while Arsenal have a ton of possesion, with the game possibly ending 0-0 or 0-1 because City defend well but hardly attack.

Or Mancini will realise he has alot of attacking potential in his squad, and that Arsenal, for all their excellence in attack, have a bit of a rubbish defence, and go for it.

Tevez will either score 20 points or 0 points this weekend, and for an outlay of 17.09, i'm not sure i want to risk it.

So, my only decision now is.... go with Tevez, or go with a cheaper striker to get a better keeper/midfield.

I'll decide on Friday when i know what my defense will be!

    ReplyDelete
  19. My Team So Far
    Kirkland

    VDV Nani Malouda Brunt

    Good Or Bad ??

  20. captain Kirk--can we hold a virtual prayer meeting for him on Friday???

    ReplyDelete
  21. Three notes/points:

    1. Bale hat-trick - VdV didn't play.

    2. how about Alcaraz in defence? :)

    3. I second that vote for Kirk's prayer meet!!! :p

    ReplyDelete
  22. i wont spend 20+ on a player the rather that drogba at 24+. i will lost many chances to get good and lower price player. you should know that, there are a lot of players will do well (around 20 points) in every week, so why not see properly all matches and pick potential player? (just imo) if you are drogba fans then should go ahead, it can not be denied that drogba is a best player who always return you a huge points without a goal.

    gkinz

    ReplyDelete
  23. i'm a Spurs supporter too and last night's game had my heart in my mouth after bale grabbed his hattrick-- "cry and laugh in equal measure" is a rather apt description :')

As of now, I havnt come any where close to forming a team yet. I've had Al-Habsi for 3 weeks but it looks like i'll have to drop him against Bolton. The only players I'm keeping for certain are Bale, Adam, VdV and Malouda, although I have Nani at 14.7

    --neoncoffee

  24. Hola

Ended with 88.5 pts this week with no Drogs/Malouda/Bale as i truly regret dropped them. Overall 701. Ah, Bale scored hat trick today. Damn, can Yahoo! restart this game? :D

Btw i never pick Brunt b4, so this week i'm gonna pick him. To get Drogs at full price means need Kirk as GK this week. Well i can see Bolton easily score 2 goals. But hey, Captain Kirk gonna use his 'second' hand which is a good news for us lol

'Although, to be fair, I've not grabbed many balls with both hands this season - which is partly why I'm on the sidelines.'

Tweaking my team atm, need both Tevez/Drogs in. Tevez 100% will score. But we'll see if he get rested on Thursday meaning he will start this Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  25. OK, this is a difficult week to pick up Fowards. I can afford both Drogba and Tevez but look like my defender squad is not strong enough. Drop Tevez or Drogba ? Drogba is a guarantee but will he play? If drop Drogb I can have more choice.

    My current team:

    Kirk
    Boateng - Jacobsen - Zhirkov
    Adam - VdV -Nani -Larsson
Drogba - Tevez - Di Santo

    or

    Kirk
    Boateng - Jacobsen - Zhirkov
Adam - VdV -Nani - Malouda
    Tevez - Obinna - Anelka

I still not happy about defender squad. Continue to drop Tevez can get better ones but I dont want to go without Drog or Tevez.

    Any comment, guys? Thx.

  30. @AM, You don't rate M-pet good pick this week?
Which is the better pick Elmander(scores away) or Odemwingie?

    Bale IS GOD?

    Cheers
    Keshari!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. AM, is there a reason you don't mention Fabregas/Nasri/Walcott? You think Citeh will shut Arsenal down? Seeing Cesc at 17.5, I went ahead and picked him up, but you don't think he'll play the full match or...?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Keshari - I think MPet is too expensive @11 away from home this week, although Elmander could be a decent pick but I prefer Obinna/Odemwingie.

Mikl-em - Fabregas is too pricey for a tough away game, no guarantee Walcott starts at almost 13+, Nasri's value is greatly decreased when Fab plays.

    ReplyDelete
  33. For those who don't have enough funds to buy Bale, I have a great feeling Kompany Is going to outscore him this week given how many shots he blocks (2 pts. each).

    My Picks Of The Week

    Drogba (if fit)
    VdV
    Etherington
    Gerrard
    M. Petrov
    Bale

Will Muamba, Di Santo and Etuhu be a good pick for this weekend? Got 4.41 left in the bank. Already got Drogs, Tevez, Bale VdV, Adam, Boateng, Reo-Coker, Zhirkov (not sure if he will start) and Capt. Kirk on the line. I need one last body.. help out please

    ReplyDelete
  38. Kirkland will be a bad play this week. This will be the time I take some funds and invest in a better play at goal. I have Robinson around 7 so he will stay. Just can't see where spreading that money will give me 10-15 points which I fear will be the negative Kirkland will bring.

Convince me he will only bring -3

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Ken- no one will convince you, we can't pick the same team, there's got to be lil differences.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @Ebi - I'm just behind you at 186 points. I was doing poorly before, around 70,000+, but jumped to 17,201 in one day! Bale(3)-Eto'o(2)-Zanetti(1)-Messi(2)...

Now I need a bit of that luck for this coming weekend...

    Currently
    Jussi
    Boateng-Jacobsen-Zhirkov
    FloMa-Adam-VdV-Nani-Silva
    Drogba-Chamakh

Losing 3m+ in the Drogba drop last weekend actually hurt...I'm still not sure what changes to make. A lot depends on Ancelotti's announcement, so have to wait until Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I believe its the fantasy Eurocup you're playing, if it is you can make 4 transfers at this stage.
Using the premier league as an example, Zanetti could play the whole 90 mins and score below 5, is average is somewhere around 2, i played the serie a game last season 2. His goal yesterday was the second since 1998 in the champions league. If you check statistics you'll see very cheap options from lesser leagues that'll score more in any match day.

  64. Hi, I Am VIGNESH from CHENNAI... I am big fan Of ur Posts MR.AM.. Then i am Expecting a CLEAN-SHEET from CHRIS KIRKLAND this week.. Bcoz i hav noticed this tat The Goal-keepers always Make Strong Come back after thier POOR PERFORMANCE in thier Previous Match.. I want to some examples... 1. BRAD FREIDEL conceded 6 GOALS against New Castle in the 2nd Week of BPL ,Then he kept a CLEAN-SHEET against EVERTON in a 1-0 win .. 2. SCOTT CARSON conceded 6 Goals Against CHELSEA in opening week of BPL , then he kept a CLEAN -SHEET against SUNDERLAND in 1-0 Win... Even KIRKLAND conceded 6 Goals against CHELSEA in the 2nd week of BPL, so i expecting Kirkland to come back strong n keep a Clean-sheet against BOLTON...

  67. If Zhirkov played who should I take out with my current defenders >> Coleman, Hutton, Salcido...

@neoncoffee - Thanks for the advice, but to set my team apart from the rest, that means I need to be taking a greater risk right?
Just an example of taking risk, Drogba to Torres... haha... I love Torres myself, but RH tactics... speechless... >.<

    Thanks.

  69. My team looks like a group of game modes

    Very easy: Kirk
    Easy: Zhirkov-Boateng-Jacobsen
Normal: Adam - VdV - Nani - Silva
Hard: Tevez - Drogba - Obinna

    any comments, guy :D?

  70. @eT: Drog and Meireles for me.

@Roonaldo: Downgrade one of Nani or Malouda to Bruntand upgrade Tevez to Drogba. You could change Di Santo to Meireles, Holden or Henderson. All are consistent YFF point scorers who should return their cost.

My team looks like this atm:

    Kirk
    Salcido Kompany Bosingwa
    Adam VDV FloMal Henderson Brunt
    Drogba Obinna

Still not sure about Bosingwa but don't have the funds to upgrade him to another Chelsea defender other than Ferreira, who is also a starting risk himself.

Guess we'll have to wait for ancelotti's press conference before making a decision.

So many with Kirkland...I can't believe it! Nik, be honest, you're not going to sleep well conceding zero points. I've ponied up and spent my money on Cech...he could easily rack up 20 points.

Aside from that, I like all your picks...me:

    Cech
    Bale, Jacobsen, Boateng
Malouda, Nani, Adam, Reo-Coker, Mark Davies
    Tevez, Piquionne

  73. bengoh91: Thanks. Keep Bosingwa, Ferreira played 90 minutes on midwk.

  74. Anelka or berbatov?

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hmmm...Kirk, Zhirkov, Piquionne and Drogba
    or Foster, Coleman, Dembele, Anelka.

I think if Zhirkov is playing I'll go with the first one.

  76. TEAM 1:
    Foster
    Boateng, Hutton, Zhirkov
    Malouda, Nani, VDV, Adam, Brunt
    Tevez, Obinna

    OR

    TEAM 2:
    Kirkland
    Boateng, Jacobsen, Zhirkov
    VDV, Nani, Adam, Mereiles
    Tevez, Obinna, Drogba

    Which team will you choose?

  77. @Hooligan gangstaz- you have Cech but you also have Reo-Coker and Mark davies, two fillers

  78. Vignesh from Chennai....

I have limited knowledge of the sport and I am a "first year" player but from what I have seen & heard about Kirkland is that his "team" may be playing much better but Kirkland himself (when playing) is a big risk. It was just yesterday that he accidentally stepped out right in front of a moving bus. Thank goodness he is fine. The bus went right between his legs.

I do hope for the best as "my" team may still be open for the risk.

  81. It is a full moon tonight, so I am going with this bizarre configuration:

    Foster
    Jacobsen-Zhirkov-Boateng
    VDV-Malouda-Nani-Brunt-Adam
    Drogba-Hernandez

    What do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Why isn't Hleb recommended? I'm curious.

    ReplyDelete
  83. @Mancunian - Hleb doesn't like the system Birmingham plays. Hleb have played 4 games and still have no real offensive contribution such as Assists/SOT/CW/Crosses. I think there are better options at his price level.

What do you think about my team?

    Kirkland
    Bale Coleman Zhirkov
    Adam VDV Nani Brunt Gomez
    Drogba Zigic
