Week 21 - Update

Load and loads of team & injury news which I will be adding to throughout the day, in what will be my last post of 2010...what a year it has been!

- Alex Ferguson has given some pretty useless news regarding Nani's involvement & also indicated he's considering resting a few players, although no names were mentioned. "We're looking at Nani as a possibility," the he told reporters at Carrington on Friday. "We'll see how he is today, but he maybe has more chance of playing against Stoke." Either way, Fergie will look to "freshen things up" against Roberto Di Matteo's side. "We may look to make one or two changes," confessed the boss, "as one or two looked a bit tired in the last few minutes against Birmingham."

A rest for Rooney or Berbatov perhaps? West Brom v Man Utd is the 12:45 game tomorrow there is a chance that we'll have the confirmed teams before the deadline, but it's not a certainty so this has me concerned.

- Arsène Wenger will welcome Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Alex Song back into his squad for tomorrow’s trip to Birmingham, but Diaby is out. I'm not sure how Wenger will shape the team...Arshavin will be pushing for inclusion in midfield along with the rested Nasri, Walcott, Wilshire, Fabregas & Song, with RvP, Chamakh & Bendter also in the mix for the forward positions. Who plays? I'm not sure, but I'm now unlikely to risk Walcott.

- Stuart Holden, Steinsson & Paul Robinson all look to be out of Bolton's visit to Liverpool through a mixture of injury & suspension, while Lee is a the Asia Cup.

- On the Anfield side of things, Joe Cole & Steven Gerrard are both doubts although I imagine Hodgson will do everything possible to get his capatin on the pitch.

- Reports coming out of Newcastle suggest Andy Carroll is injured and will miss the trip to Wigan; a huge blow for the Geordies.

- Sunderland duo Danny Welbeck and Lee Cattermole both set to play against Blackburn but Onuoha and Mensah both out and Asamoah Gyan is a major doubt with a hamstring injury so is unlikely to be risked.

- Blackburn have huge problems; Chris Samba is a struggling, keeper Paul Robinson has a calf injury, Phil Jones, Jason Roberts, Vince Grella, Keith Andrews & Steven Nzonzi are injured, while Michel Salgado & Niko Kalinic are suspended.

- West Brom have massive defensive worries, with Tamas and Jara both suspended and Scharner a doubt with illness. I've been thinking since my initial post & reckon Ferguson may see it as an ideal game for Rooney to break his scoring duck so I might put him in.

- Manchester City skipper Carlos Tevez is expected to return to the starting XI, but Mancini will probably rest a few players with Arsenal away in midweek. Who that'll be we simply don't know, but as I missed Balotelli on the barndoor I've decided not to pay almost £10m for him just in case. I'm probably going to risk Silva as he was subbed after 55 minutes in midweek, but to be honest it's all guess work.

- Charlie Adam returns for Blackpool after suspension.

- William Gallas is set to make a timely return to the Tottenham side and should replace Younes Kaboul, who starts a three-match ban. Jermain Defoe is also suspended but we have no news on who starts this one upfront, Crouch or Pav.

- Dembele is likely to miss out again at Tottenham as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury, and Mark Schwarzer will play his last game before flying out to the Asian Cup.

- Matthew Etherington and Jon Walters will have late fitness tests ahead of the clash with Everton at the Britannia Stadium. If Etherington is out then Pennant is a great pick. Robert Huth is suspended so Faye could return.

- Everton have similar problems, and will again give fitness tests to Jagielka & Heitinga, with both said to have an "outside chance". Victor Anichebe is back from suspension and could go straight in to the starting line-up, while midfield talisman Tim Cahill will play his final match before the Asia Cup. Bloody hell, how badly are Everton going to miss him when he's gone?

- Chelsea will be without Ivanovic who is suspended. Brazilian centre back Alex is still missing with a knee injury, so BRUMA WLL START, confirmed by Anchelotti, he'll partner Terry...simple switch from Ferreira as it's a risk between him and Bosingwa for right back.

UPDATE My team: Reina, Bruma, Kolarov, Bale, Watson, Lampard, Van Der Vaart, Malouda, Ameobi (HUGE hunch), Bent, Rooney

That's could be final, and that's everything from me until 2011. Good luck and Happy New Year! :)

Cheers,
AM

  1. No changes to my team yet, Man United should win comfortably. Giggs? Chicharito?

    Krul
    Kolarov Boateng Bassong
    Nani VdV Nasri Albrighton
    Balotelli Tevez R.VanPersie

  2. Although Chelsea can repeat that 7-1 win, i'm hoping Villa at least get a draw, so i'm not picking Chelsea players.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Giggs would seem unlikely to play 3 matches within a week, having started the last 2 and playing 90 minutes in the last one.

  4. I need a filler defender under 4 who will start. Who stands most chance of starting between Spector, Ben Haim, Murphy or Carney?

    ReplyDelete
  5. so fergie says he's bringing in some players, united will be unchanged then! never believe a word he says.

my team will stay unchanged barring any last minute panics, its a team built for long term gains and discounts over short term benefits.

  6. @Cap- Spector, Ben Haim 50-50 but i'll go with Spector.

  7. i have rooney on my team i am nervous that he wont play anyone have any suggestions on what i shoud do?

  8. Is Ferreira guaranteed a start? The last time he started as a CB, Chelsea lost 0-3. I won't be surprised Bruma starts ahead of him instead.

  13. I wouldnt worry about fergies comments when picking Rooney, he doesn't tend to rest him too much...

Much more concerned about Arsenal and the fact that Wenger can feasibly pick any 6 of the following

Fabregas VP Rosicky Walcott Denilson Song Wilshere Chamakh Bender Arshavin Nasri and possibly even Aaron Ramsey who has had his loan finished...

I would say Song Fabregas and Nasri should be pretty certain starters which leaves 3 places for the rest. I am with you AM, giving a wide berth!!

AM you sure about Reina? Liverpool with Torres and Gerrard were abysmal the other night v Wolves who are themselves not great...

Also anyone know why Kolarov suddenly didn't play the other night?

  45. I'm going with this:

    Gordon
    Kolarov Hutton Bruma
    VDV Barton Lampard Henderson Pennant
    Elmander Tevez

Not many big names, which worries me a bit, but I think it's well balanced. I think everyone here should start, maybe besides of VDV, but 10 starts are still a huge advantage.
Bruma is a great bargain, Hutton is also very affordable and has a good chance of a CS (I was worried he might be replaced by Corluka, but Redknapp didn't seem to rotate his squad too much, especially in the back - knock on wood). Kolarov, VDV and Lampard obvoiusly stay.
Gordon is a bit pricey for a keeper, but he plays at home where Sunderland don't concede many, against an avrage team without a real manager and that lack the striker who won the game for them 4 days ago. And, regardless of the result, Gordon usually makes a lot of saves anyway. Better than Reina this week, I believe.
Barton is on a big discount for me and he has been performing well, while Pennant and Henderson score many phantom points and have nice match-ups. I hope they both start even if I'm not 100% sure they will. It will be a big blow if one of them doesn't, but they're both very important for their teams so I believe they won't be left out.
Elmander seems like a season keeper to me. I've had him for about 7 weeks and he usually scores at least close to his value. Plus, he's playing the fantastic Liverpool defence we all know very well. Tevez is another concern for me as he might be subbed early, but the way ManCity are playing lately and the way Blackpool are defending all season, he has a good chance to score at least one in the first half, so he's also a great pick.

    Any last minute advices?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anon 9:38 Piquionne will be playing Wolves(bad defensively) at home, while Crouch isn't a sure starter. Fuller will have a hard time against Distin, so i would pick Piquionne.

Anon 9:39 Malouda + Ameobi is a much better combination given how many chances they get in a match.

Who should I pick for goalkeeper I only have 4.7
Options: Krul vs Wigan, Carson vs United, or Harper/Robbo both 0's

  67. double gameweek for liverpool & blackpool

    ReplyDelete
  68. So a double game week for Blackpool Liverpool has been posted. Just to confirm, does that mean any scoring in the second game on the 12th will be posted back to the original game date? At least, there will be no double posting of scores to this game week, so no need to get Adam or Gerrard in hopes of double points-- Correct?

Yahoo HQs have been so derelict in telling us anything formally.

  75. Balotelli not even on the bench and Tevez missed a penalty. If you dropped Tevez you did well, unless he scores 3 more goals I guess.

  76. You can see in Week 22 fixtures that it is going to be a double week for Blackpool and Liverpool as the match is going to be played on January 12.

    ReplyDelete
  77. @ayb - yes, I think that is correct because the Team Manager page says:

Week 22 (deadline: Tue 4 Jan 14:00 EST, for games Jan 4 to Jan 14)

NOTE: TO JAN 14! So, that includes the extra match on Jan 12. Which means, we will have double weeks after all this year, thanks to the weather...

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ive chosen lots of Blackpool & Liverpool players on the BD.

No rule changes have been posted, so I consider these 2 teams as having a double scoring week.

Please inform me if I have not seen some new rules!

I see nothing that indicates one way or the other how they will handle DGW. Infuriating to say the least about Yahoo HQs. The last half-vast word we have is from the Fantsist Blog, who doesn't seem to know a thing and can't be bothered to actually ask Yahoo what the story will be. So I guess we will have a test case.
As I posted above, this is still my GUESS as to how it will be handled.
"So a double game week for Blackpool Liverpool has been posted. Just to confirm, does that mean any scoring in the second game on the 12th will be posted back to the original game date? At least, there will be no double posting of scores to this game week, so no need to get Adam or Gerrard in hopes of double points-- Correct?"

  80. Week 22 Fixtures list Wed, Jan 12 Blackpool v Liverpool as well. So I think at least for next week's game both teams will have double game weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  81. BTW, both of you guys have been very helpful in the past.

This issue is so easily solved if Yahoo cared.
My guess is the official Fantasist blogger was asked the question and just ducked answering it in his Friday chat session.

The best I can figure is that by putting Day 16, 18 or 19 besides the fixture in the January calendar, it will be posted back to that GW's score, if you fielded that player. So you are only going to get credit for both games if you chose the player in December, not now.

The official rules on the home page have not been changed- so they are no help. So YMMV.

Why can't we just have a real conversation, lol

It takes hours to get replies to each other!(Well for me to reply to you anyway!)

    ReplyDelete
  86. Pauly-- That's the problem.... the official rules are no help at all- they say nothing about double game weeks or postponed games. The official rules are about two paragraphs. That's why I said they are no help.

So we all are going on what others remember was the customary practise, but then two weeks ago the Fantasist blogger lets out that Yahoo HQ's changed what the oldtimers remember, and then Yahoo does nothing to clear it up-- so we are flying blind.

I suppose after this week we will see how Yahoo handles things. Right now I can tell they don't care about this "soccer" game-- or they would have cleared this up in five minutes by actually posting the rule, as I asked them too.

So I am looking at minutia in the Yahoo fixture calendar which seems vaguely consistent with posting scores earned in the postponed games back to the original game week, if you picked that player. That's what the Fantasist said.

On the other hand, I can see an opposite interpretation in the deadline date, which says "Week 22 (deadline: Tue 4 Jan 14:00 EST, for games Jan 4 to Jan 14)". Why care about the Jan 14 game, if the scores will be posted back to GW 19 or whatever regardless of who you pick?

I guess another wild possibility is that you would get credit in both the postponed week and the current week for the made up game. Wow.

So I have no clue. Nik has done his best to make a practical choice based on limited info-- which is what we do each week anyway. Good luck.
    Arizona, here.

    ReplyDelete
  87. @arizona

    well, gratitude for your reply

My instinct tells me to go with double gamers, so that's what I've done. It's just a game after all, but all games need rules so that the players understand the limits round the field.
Like life, YFF is another drama unfolding, and the only thing that's certain is that change will happen. Good luck to you too
May all your picks be wild and glorious ones in 2011, bro.

  88. Hi guys,
Quite a few people have posted that there are no rules written regarding the double game week
    THERE ARE!!!!!
If you select help on the FF site, then search fantasy football you will find the rules there.
Regarding the double game weeks it states...
"If a player appears in more than one game during any given week, his total fantasy points for the week will be based on the sum of his real-life stats for the week."

So there you are in black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  89. @Ian - Yes, but that doesn't quite explain what constitutes as a "week" nor what happens when games are postponed. If the 6 or 7 games that got postponed last week were all rescheduled into the same midweek, then it doesn't state whether those games will be tallied back to the original week, made into double game weeks for those teams, or made into a separate game week altogether. At this point, since it's only one game, I'm inclined to say that Blackpool and Liverpool will play twice in Gameweek 22.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Ian-- nice find, pretty obscure of Yahoo to post it under help where you have to search for it and not simply in the rules tab. But SK has a valid point. oh well, thanks guys. arizona

    ReplyDelete
  91. and the "rule" is dated October 2007

    ReplyDelete
  92. @Ian--nice find... HOWEVER, Yahoo did post a couple months ago that there will be NO DOUBLE WEEKS.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'm assuming that it will be double game week for Blackpool and Liverpool, so I'll be loading up on them. I know its a risk given Blackpool has the worst home record and Liverpool are terrible away, but I think they should still score better with 2 games than trying to predict which SGer will do well.

    Reina
    Kolarov Evatt Skrtel
    Nani VDV Gerrard Adam
    Balotelli Torres Varney

Basically apart from my 4 players at big discounts(Kolarov, VDV, Nani, Balotelli), I've loaded up on DGers. May swop out Evatt for Johnson, but that might be too reliant on Liverpool keeping a CS, but I cant afford any other Blackpool defender if I do pick Johnson

    ReplyDelete
  94. @Ian, nice find, but I question their validity as the points mentioned on that table differ from the current rules available.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think the fact that the Blackpool-Liverpool match is listed as a week 19 fixture here(http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/football/premier-league/2010-2011/results/2011_01.html) doesn't mean anything because rescheduled matches were listed like that last season as well(IIRC).

    ReplyDelete
  96. What's happening to Chelsea FC???

    ReplyDelete
  97. they have to go back on the 'no double gameweek' rule. with so many games having been rescheduled so far, if they have to fit them round champions league, carling cup, fa cup and international fixtures, there will be one or two here and there in random midweek slots leading to 50 or so gameweeks. just wouldn't make sense!

    ReplyDelete
  98. Should i drop Rooney, I have him at 14.?? and now he's almost 17

    ReplyDelete
  99. Drop Rooney for sure...he is pure garbage now.

    ReplyDelete
  100. In what way is Rooney garbage? That comment is ridiculous. He scored on Saturday against WBA and is home to Stoke this week. Rooney at 14 is a good bet, if he truly has found his form he will never be as cheap again. Same goes for RVP, Lampard, etc.

    stc3

    ReplyDelete
  101. You wanna keep him at 14 plus then go right ahead. I'll put that money to better use than his usual 8 points.

    ReplyDelete
  102. As far as I remember, double game rule always applies in this FF... I've never heard about the changes of this rule... Can anyone post the link showing such changes?

Anyway up 'til now, I've loaded up my team with those two pools players... Btw, i cant believe that liverpool's defenders are cheaper than blackpool's, that's sarcastic... :)

Ameobi - only goal and game winner... shouldn't use up all of your New Year's luck within the first week!

    Nice work AM!!

  105. @Anon: Wenger has already said in press conferences that he sees RvP being able to play behind Chamakh. But due to his injury record he said he will also protect RvP from too much game time until hes full fitness (which is never). Does this mean he'll start and come off early versus Citeh? Or be benched and have a cameo impact sub appearance? Its all up to Wenger, but both situation are possible

  106. I had Bale @18 for last week, so i wonder why someone thinks Rooney @14 isn't worth it. He's a sure starter even with squad rotation, he's on P.K's and he's Wayne Rooney.
However you look at it Rooney is good value, with Nani coming back Berbatov stands the risk of rotation.

  107. I think it's funny how the fantasist is completely useless and doesn't help clarify the situation at all (about the double game)... Yahoo needs to replace the fool with someone who will do a better job.

  108. Yahoo is showing its usual standard re: the delay in clarifying the deal re postponed games. I dont use their websites for anything other the FF. Even the comments boards are poorly modded and full of spotty herberts. Thanks for all the hard work AM, it might seem unappreciated but trust me, we would be lost without your rationale.

  109. You guys having Rooney might want to consider again.. he is doubtful with an ankle injury.

  111. So it looks like we may be able to pick up David Beckham soon :O

Looks like an almost certainty hes going to Tottenham

  112. I can't wait to pick Dzeko for man City

  113. In the absence of any certainty coming out of Yahoo HQ, suggest pick a couple of premium doublegamers (e.g. Gerrard, Torres) only.

Don't get rid of any heavily discounted players for 'pool players...

  114. @popthycollar

Don't think its worth sacfificing premium players for the "pool's" double gamers like you say, if you look at liverpools averages even a double week for most of them wouldn't equate to a premium players single. Charlie Adam will do me!
