Week 12 - Player Picks

Week 12 is the first of the new "midweeks" run by Yahoo for this season, and gives us all a chance to quickly forget about the nightmare of Week 11. It's also the 3rd Round of The Blog Cup for the remaining 450 teams.

I'm afraid I don't have the time to write an extensive set of player picks for these midweeks, so I'll quickly evaluate the fixtures, list the players, detail some injury news to keep an eye on, and leave you to fill in the gaps yourselves...I know you're all perfectly capable :)

Injury News...

- Ancelotti has suggested Drogba has been suffering a mild bout of malaria but will play vs Fulham. Alex & Anelka are both doubts with knee & back injuries respectively. Essien should return & Bosingwa is likely to get a start.

- Ferguson says his squad has been decimated by a virus: Evra, Vidic, Berbatov and Scholes all believed to be among the victims. Nani & Giggs also big doubts. We don't know if they'll start or not, be I'll be staying clear of them.

- Harry Redknapp has stated Van Der Vaart is still struggling but "has a slight chance" to be fit for the Sunderland game. He'll leave the decision up to the player..

- Salcido out for 3-4 weeks with ankle ligament injury suffered against Villa.

- Nasri is available after his minor calf knock, Wenger has confirmed (on Arsenal Official website)

- Darren Bent has a hamstring injury and may be out for a couple of weeks.

- Koscielny & Balotelli suspensions both upheld by the FA, they now face 2 and 3 match bans respectively.

- Carew, Heskey, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Sidwell AND Reo Coker all missing for Villa. Bannan & Clark could continue in the center of midfield.

- Mignolet could be replaced by Gordon in the Sunderland goal.

- Benjani is out for Blackburn with a hamstring injury.

We should have better updates tomorrow so keep checking back.

Team currently on my page: Krul, Coleman, Bale, Bosingwa, Adam, Barton, Albrighton, Van Der Vaart, Gyan, Obinna, Drogba

I quite like the above team, but I hold a barndoored Torres in Drogba's place so if I made that switch then I could bring in Ashley Young in Albrighton's place. Keeper & defence are likely to stay as they are, Obinna is a hunch and with Bent out for a while I think Gyan will stay.

Bale wasn't as bad as reported - he created 3 excellent chances that Spurs wasted at Bolton and hit the crossbar with a freekick, 6.5 points could very easily have been 20+, so I think I'll keep him as Spurs play two home league games in a row. Obinna is a hunch and I think I'm going to hang on to VDV @6 as I reckon he'll be on the bench and will be ready for the weekend game vs Blackburn.

How are things shaping up for you?

Cheers,
AM

  3. I got Balotelli at BD price and now I think i'll keep him even with the suspension.
Also BDed torres so hopefully he starts scoring goals.
Does anybody know when Rooney is coming back from USA?

  4. Much like Am I had a team that had Park and Gyan in it at some stage but they did not make the starting 11. 47 points but I did not lose much ground. Team right now is

    Foster
    Boateng Zhirkov Coleman
    Adam VDV Park Bannan
    Gyan Carroll Torres

    20.12 in the bank.

PS - I fancy City to beat Utd in the derby.

    zhirkov bosingwa olsson(WBA)
    silva larsson brunt meireles
    gyan drogs torres

    any thoughts comments.

I am somewhat gutted after watching our poor performance against liverpool. we needs lampard back and to sign a creative mf player this january malouda is too streaky and without lampard we have to rely on the wingers to create anything

  6. My Team:
    S. Mignolet (BD at 5.5, probably gonna change)
    G. Bale, Y. Zhirkov (When will he stop playing?), S. Coleman
    F. Malouda (Last chance), C. Adam, R. Van der Vaart (Big Discount), J. Barton
    D. Drogba (Last chance), A. Gyan, A. Carroll

  7. @J0J0, rooney wont be back for a while... and even if he is, he wont be back on form so soon

    @BCB, i think it'll end in a score draw.

@saitogenetic you didnt mention your keeper? at any rate, i'm in no position to comment at the moment-- i havnt really had time to sit down and think about the midweek games >.>

    right now, my team is
    Foster
    Zhirkov / Coleman / Bale
    Adam / Brunt / Barton / Silva / Malouda
    Obinna / Yakubu

i'm not happy with the choice of yakubu, but he's the only option considering that i now have 0.02 left in the bank

  9. It's tough to think about it again so soon. I'm falling behind at work because of the new YFF policy! lol!

    Anyway, currently have:
    Foster
    Boateng-Bale-Bosingwa
    Adam-VdV-Barton-Walcott
    Chicharito-Gyan(BD)-Torres(BD)

I'm not sure of what changes to make, if any.

I'm hoping Bale just had CL hangover, and willing to give him another shot.

Gyan is a definite keeper if you got him at the BD price, especially with Bent out.

  14. Coming off a horrid week I am trying to bounce back, currently I have:

    Fabianski

    Zhirkov Bosingwa Coleman

    Nasri Walcott Cahill Adam Malouda

    Hernandez Gyan

Any comments would be great! I am hoping Fabianski won't kill me again this week and will keep the CS against Wolves. Hopefully Zhirkov and Bosingwa both get the nod, and Coleman can continue to play well.(Figures the one week I did not have him he scores)

I don't know about Nasri yet, I have him at such a high discount I don't really want to drop him unless I have to. Cahill is playing great for Everton and they are up against Bolton home, I think Cahill can nod one or two home :) Malouda, it is time to find his form again, I have a feeling him and Drogba will connect for a few good chances. Hopefully Walcott will get the start after a horrid Arsenal performance on Sunday, it seems when he gets put in he always creates chances. What do you guys think about Hernandez and Gyan?

In an FA agreement with FIFA appeals are only upheld "in cases where video evidence is absolutely clear the referee has made a 'serious and obvious error'"

Anyway, that aside - no-one think Van Persie @ 14.xx is worth selection? I know he did nothing v Newcastle but Wenger might actually play him up front v Wolves... Or do you think he will be on the bench again?

Thanks for all the additional hard work AM...

  40. A few GK thoughts for your consideration:

In five home games, Petr Cech has returned 85 points and five clean sheets. That's an average of 17 points/game for all you English majors out there.

Brad Friedel has 79 points overall, 72 points of which are from his 5 home games. That's an average of 14.4 points/game. Only three GKs in YFF have more saves than Friedel.

Notwithstanding their high price tags, I think both of these GKs present very interesting options for this week (especially Friedel, given the opposition). I find it a bit hilarious that I am considering these guys given that I went with Kirk as my GK 4-5 times earlier this year!

One other point: if you go by the numbers, there is absolutely no way you can pick Foster this week. His road production is atrocious.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm working with

    Kirk
    Zhirkov(@ 4.37), Terry, Hutton(6.18)
    Barton(7.01), Malouda, Nolan, DSilva
Drogba, Ameobi, ?? (holding Kalou, no discount)

I don't see a lot of talk about Ameobi this week.. is he set not to start? I'm stuck between Kalou, Carroll, and Obinna for that last spot. I'd go with Kalou for sure if I knew he was in, but it looks like he won't be. Advice appreciated. Also, is Carroll really preferred over Ameobi if both are in? I'm not so sure..

  44. Everything looks good except I don't think Nasri is set to start after that knock he picked up on sunday, I doubt Wenger is gunna play him, they should be able to get the result without him.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @DB, Ameobi took a slight knock against Arsenal and was subbed off for Nile Ranger but i still expect him to play as it was just a precaution. And yes, Carroll is preferred to him if playing one up front. If you're def going with Ameobi, then i'd pick up Obinna, he's due a goal.

As for my team, I somehow have -0.98 money, does anyone know what would happen if i press save - will I take advantage of the situation or will it just kill my whole team? Has this happened to anyone else before?

This hasn't been confirmed. Redknapp has said he has a chance & will let the player decide if he's ready, so it's possible he starts tonight or perhaps takes a place on the bench.

    In other news...

Mignolet could be replaced by Gordon in the Sunderland goal.

  88. By the way, I have a hypothesis on which team is likely to win a match in the EPL:

Go to the Yahoo! site; compare the results of the teams' last 5 matches; correct for which team is at Home or Away.

    Win = 2
    Draw = 1
    Loss = 0

    Home = 2
    Away = 0

Going by this hypothesis, to be finetuned or improved on by taking other variables (such as: points per situation, availability of key palyers, etc) into consideration, the following are the likely mid-week results:

Stoke v Birmingham = Birmingham Win or Draw
Spurs v Sunderland = Spurs Win or Draw
Wigan v Liverpool = Liverpool Win
West Ham v West Brom = Draw or West Ham Win
Newcastle v Blackburn = Newcastle Win
Chelsea v Fulham = Chelsea Win
Villa v Blackpool = Villa Win
Arsenal v Wolves = Draw or Arsenal Win
    Man City v Man U = Man U Win
Everton v Bolton = Everton Win

From now on we all should make efforts to verify the correctness of this hypothesis and suggest possible modifications...

Good luck in our mid-week selections!

    Salut !

    Try oddsmakers instead.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Tayo, basically your "hypothesis" is suggesting that teams who win more games than their opponents are more likely to win, especially when they play at home.

The fact that you've added up some numbers doesn't really detract from the fact that you are stating the absolutle obvious in a quite stupendously overthought way.

Take it further, and use your 'method' to predict who will win the premier league.

    Won before = 2
    No won = 0

    So by my calculations:

    Chelsea - likely to win
Manchester Utd - likely to win
Wolverhampton Wanderers - Not so likely to be crowned premier league champions

    Genius.

  98. Ancelotti has suggested Drogba has been suffering a mild bout of malaria but will play vs Fulham. Alex & Anelka are both doubts with knee & back injuries respectively.

Ferguson reckons his squad has been decimated by a virus: Evra, Vidic, Berbatov and Scholes all believed to be among the victims. Nani & Giggs also big doubts. We don't know if they'll start or not, be I'll be staying clear of them.

  99. Do you think Kalou will be a good pick? if Anelka is out

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thanks AM that answered my Q for Vidic but any opinions on Nasri???

    ReplyDelete
  101. Most likely and a great average to boot... Btw, where's young Josh Mceachran (JMac?) in YFF? Almost due a start and no sign of the lad. Especially if Zhirkov is benched.

Decisions, decisions. Shall I stick with Chamakh (who's almost dead to me!) or go with someone like Tungay or 'The Fonz' alongside Carroll and Torres?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

    Nuno

  102. I am tempted to drop Malouda, but now he's playing at home.

Also, currently have Drogba/Chamakh but think I am
    going with Torres/Carroll..

    My team-

    Kirk
    Boateng, Squillaci, Zhirkov
    Adam, Milijas, Gerard, Malouda
    Chamakh, Drogba, Gyan

    OR

    Carroll/Torres

    any suggestions?
Also, I dont see a lot of people on Gerard this mid week, am i missing something?

  103. AM why don't you add a Captain poll to the blog?

Speaking of Captain Torres, Carroll or A.Cole???

    ReplyDelete
  104. Captains have nothing to do with with the Yahoo game, so there won't be a poll.

    No news on Nasri,

Koscielny & Balotelli suspensions both upheld by the FA, they now face 2 and 3 match bans respectively.

Carew, Heskey, Agbonlahor, Petrov, Sidwell AND Reo Coker all missing for Villa.

  105. Hi guys
Im struggling for this week now.
1st - I cant decide on my keeper so im going Kirkland.
2nd - Keeping Park and Gyan (Probably a bad idea) due to their discount.

    Here is how i look.

    Kirkland
    Boateng, Bale, Coleman
    Barton, A.Young, Park, Brunt
    Torres, Gyan, K.Jones

    Any suggestions?
All except Torres, Boateng, Park and Gyan are bought at full price.

    Thanks
    LC

  106. Malouda is on his last chance for me, I dropped Chamakh for Torres. Liverpool are on the up from now on. Would like Torres with Tevez but not enough dosh so went with Carroll.

  107. @Juelz: To appeal is to ask for a review. This does not mean that the review board will automatically retract the red card.

As it is, the appeal has been dismissed. No Koscielny for Arsenal's next TWO matches (one for this offence, plus another for getting sent off in earlier in the season).

  108. Someone Help!!

Need to know. Will zhirkov and boeteng play?

    ReplyDelete
  109. not boeteng..i meant bosingwa...

    ReplyDelete
  110. I've opted for Modric/ Carrol over VdV/ Odemwingie because they're both uncertainties.

    Wise decision?

    ReplyDelete
  111. AM true what you said about a captain poll not needed for Yahoo FF but I found your site looking for EPL FF and from what I've seen here I don't need to go anywhere else so it would be nice if you added it to help us EPL FF guys out. Just a thought and can't imagine I'm the only one.

    ReplyDelete
  112. im sure it would be nice but i dont think AM has the time run a free yahoo blog and also add extra features for other fantasy games!!!

  113. anon @ 3:22-3:24,

both zhirkov and bosingwa are likely to start, but they were not guaranteed in the manager's press conference. zhirkov has been better than ramires, so i think he will continue at left mid. alex is a doubt, so i think ivanovic will shift to center back and bosingwa will play on the right.

    ReplyDelete
  114. AM - what are your thoughts on Reina between the sticks for 9.48? No-one else seems to be looking at him...

    ReplyDelete
  115. @Dan The poll doesn't need much work it's just a widget and all you do is add it to the site then add names then us guys do all the hard work by voting who's best.
Anyway it was just a thought, I'm still happy!!

  124. I have gone with a crazy team this week. Due to the unpredictability this season, I feel maybe it is the time to go for something different. It could turn out to be a big failure or a stroke of genius.

    Here goes
    Freidel
    Boateng Hutton Coleman
    VDV Malouda Arteta Nolan
    Obinna Delfounseo Elmander

Freidel- Really not comfortable spending so much on GK. But seeing Villa are pretty solid at home, I am hoping for a CS. Fingers crossed.

Boateng has been quietly returning his value so he stays despite the tough matchup. Hutton is in form and goes forward quite a bit. Coleman is playing in midfield and playing at home.

Since I stuck with VDV last week, I will keep him. Hopefully he plays. Malouda at home against weak opposition is a no brainer. I am giving Arteta one last chance this week after he let me down last week. Don't want to go for Cahill as he probably needs a goal to cover his value. Final midfield spot goes to Nolan. He tends to score well at home so he may come good.

Obinna is shooting from everywhere. He is also good at scoring misc points so he's in . Delfounseo is the only fit striker at Villa and playing at home against a leaky blackpool. All of Elamnder's goals have come away from home. He is a gamble away to a solid everton but still worth it in my opinion.

Hopefully this midweek will improve after the horror weekend that most of us had. Good luck to all! :)
