Goalkeepers: My Story So Far

We all know it's been a tough season to pick keepers thus far, so as I was bored this evening I had a quick look through my own record after the first 15 weeks.

As expected, it does not make pretty reading...

Week 1: Kirkland -10
Week 2: Jaaskalainen +23
Week 3: Cudicini -1
Week 4: Harper -2
Week 5: Foster -3
Week 6: Foster +18
Week 7: Foster -6
Week 8: Krul -3
Week 9: Kirkland 0
Week 10: Fabianski +14
Week 11: Fabianski -3
Week 12: Krul -5
Week 13: Green +13
Week 14: Carson -10.5
Week 15: Howard -12

4 +Positive Scores
10 -Negative Scores
1 Zero

Total Keeper Points = 12.5 (corrected, thanks rwl)

I'm actually surprised my overall keeper points was a positive score...but it's still an absolutely dreadful record and I'm shocked I've been able to stay in the Top 500 with such a rotten run. I'd be interested to see how others have done (if you can be bothered to scroll through 15 weeks and work it out!)

Week 16 Player Picks will be up tomorrow night.

Cheers,
AM

I believe that comes to an even 80 points. Considerably higher than I expected. Although MOST of those points have come in the last 6 weeks. The first 9 were a bit of a cluster.

  5. I did this three weeks ago for my team and I was averaging about 2 points from keepers to that point. In the last three weeks, I've had a nice little run with Al-Habsi (CS + win), Robinson (CS+win), and then Jussi (Draw, 2 conceded but enough saves to return 3.5). So it's been better lately for me.

I really find the keeper selection the most interesting aspect of the game. There are several different theories as to how to go about choosing your keeper.

Theory 1: Pick the keeper for a top team and let it ride. (problem with this strategy is that there is usually not as big of an upside due to high prices and often times, not many chances for saves)

Theory 2: Pick the keeper with the best matchup of those who cost less than 6 or so. This is the high risk high reward group. I've traditionally been in this category because I like to spend most of my money on outfield players.

Theory 3: Then there are people who try to lock in a solid keeper at a good low price and hold on as long as possible. Ben Foster springs to mind.

The biggest problem with selecting a keeper is you're not really choosing the keeper for his abilities per say. You're choosing the keeper becuase you like the team's matchup. Personally I couldn't care less how good the keeper actually is (otherwise I'd pick Pepe Reina practically every week). It's all about the team and in this season, when team's results have been inconsistent so too have the points production of the keepers.

  13. i had net +59.5 or an average of 4.0 per game; which does not sound that bad until you compare to the average cost of approx 9.0 per game. this is not an acceptable rate of return.

i got burned badly by kirkland in week one (-10) and howard in week 15 (-12); the best were cech in week 9 (28) and week 12 (16).

if i had to do it all over again, i would have kept a benched kirkland @ 1 and let it ride for the season. too late for that now though.

alternatively, foster held at 6 all season for 140.5 pts or hart held all season at 9 for 132 pts (each an average of approx 9 pts per game) would have been reasonably clever. so maybe this is the way to play the keeper position. pick a decently priced good one -- assuming you get the right one -- and stick with him.

Pick & choose week to week for the most part. Whoever will fit for the price I have to work with. Had Kirkland for 2 of those weeks for a zero.

As of now, mine for this week is Fabianski. (so far)

    Week 9: Kirkland 0
    Week 10-15: Hart -4, 16, 13, 15, 3, 4.5

    Total: 90.5

My first season in YFF and I didn't know the blog then so started off with Hahnemann and got pretty luck considering the season the guy's having.
Decided to go with Hart afterwards, but couldn't start him vs. Chelsea in week 6, which was a mistake because I had him at 8.xx. Bought him back later on, but decided to go big with Drogba in week 9 which turned out to be a total bust.

Considering how every decision I've made that resulted in selling Hart turned out to be a mistake I'm definitely sticking with him. Imo at 9.1 he's good value and has a chance of a CS in every given week.

Imo the variance with goalies week in week out are the biggest in YFF, so you can either make up a lot of ground or screw up your whole team.

  26. So, I'm at 95 points from my keepers over the course of the first 15 weeks. That makes my selections (mostly a combination of Foster, Hart, and Fabianski with some random weeks of Cech and Howard thrown in) the equivalent in production of having had EvdS for the entire season at a lower cost. That said, for those who are reporting low numbers, it might make sense to pick someone like Robbo who is price low and stick with him through the big minus numbers. If you'd had him all year (including the blowout last weekend), you'd at least have 58 points to the good for your entire season.

    Just something to think about.

I intended to do just that this season but stupidly wound up playing keeper roulette anyway. Looking at the keepers averaging around where you are can be instructive.

i made the decision to go to foster in week 2 after he had -.5 points. his price was nice. my intention was to alternate robinson and foster for the home games and matchups, but robinson got too expensive. this year i am trying to pick week to week point earners and it has improved my rankings from top 2000 or top 1000, usually, to top 250 at one point. now i am 441th.

very lucky to get total +19 points. it was mid week round, week 12. i bd'ed krul(-5) but i forgot to hit the save button, i got fabianski(18points) from my last week team instead, so i kept him for week 13(11points) as i got him very cheap.

my rules on picking a goalie are:
    1. home match
    2. against weak opponent.
    3. cheap
    4. big team.
tell me if im wrong, it just doesn't work for me this season.

Keepers are a real lottery. Last season I went on a run when I had 4consecutive clean sheets for my keepers. This season it is much harder to choose the right one each week. I've been chopping and changing weekly woth mixed results. This week i got robbo in and I may just stick with him for the next few games, if not maybe the whole season.

it seems that i always picked home game GK...

    40 points combined...

5 negative, 2 zeros and 8 positive but my GK got only 26 saves in 14 games with 20 goals conceded...

it looks like my main problem is that i am picking gk to get win and CS and not saves... so season with so many unexpected results gave me this... but the main problem is that my gks give me very bad performances... from this 20 goals at least 7-8 are big gk mistakes kirk vs blacpool, hart vs blackburn, almunia vs WBA,reina vs blackburn,fab21 vs newcastle...

next week - new pick... hoping for good one ;-)

  75. 49.5 pts. some small negatives at start. one great score from foster in wk 6. few more small negatives. then got fabianski in wk 8 up to wk 13 to get several good scores. then been kirkland ever since. bit bad that he moved up from 1.00 as can't skip in & out of him. my worst score was only -4.50 by Green in wk 2. cudicini throwing away the banker home game vs wigan in wk 3 was probably most annoying even though it was only -1. feel bad for AM ; last sat must have been gutting esp with a rob green pen save. getting almost funny now as he's cursed ! let us all know in well in advance who you fancy Nik, then we can all give him a swerve ! ;).
for this week, Carson looks nice going on win pt's alone- but his goals conceded/saves ratio of 26/41= 0.63 is just awful. worse than p robbo ( admittedly in better form this season, last sat excepted ), WORSE than rob green, an off- form tim howard, & almunia. Krul is also pretty bad with a ratio of 0.61 & he gave AM 2 negatives.
    3 of the 4 keepers who gave AM positives, have signif better ratio's foster= 18/67= 0.27. jussi = 16/44= 0.36 & fabianski =10/28= 0.36.

    S.P.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Is it just me, or does it seem that, in general, people who stuck with one keeper did better than people who jumped around more? Even in my case with Jussi, who didn't score much, if I never changed (apart from when he was out), I would have scored 22 more points overall.

    Interesting...

  79. 73.5 for me, more than half earned in last six weeks when i picked up fabianski at 6+ and have held him. was a dog's breakfast of kirkland/hart/foster/green before then. biggest regret: had foster's 20.5 in week 2, then dropped him.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I am a +6.5 :( - keep in mind that I had captKirk at 1 unit for all but 3 weeks

    Kirkland -10
    Carson +14 2nd week
    Cud -1 3rd
Kirk +-0 for 11 weeks straight costing 1 unit
    Jaak +3.5

Who's to say that the spare units were worth the bunches of zeros seeing that I am still just inside the top 2000 total and being as hight as 7000th place.

Now that I've lost the 1 unit Kirk pick I will be back to the strategy of cheaper keeper with best matchup. Risky business for sure, but so goes it with all yff selections. Thank you Berbs!

Does colder weather favor the defenses or offenses generally speaking? I don't know. And will Drogs ever get his scoring touch back?

It's been the strangest of my 5 seasons thus far.

    Good luck to us all.
