Week 2 - Player Picks

The dust has settled on Week 1, we've accepted that most of us did pretty poorly, but it's a new week and it's time for blog readers around the globe to put their disappointment behind them and start the march back towards the Top 50/Top 500/Top 1000 or whatever personal target they've set themselves for this season.

I'm sure we're also all hoping to see a better weekend of Premier League football, after 5 draws and just 18 goals from the opening weekend proved a bit of an anti-climax. In terms of excitement from a personal stand-point it helps that Spurs will finally be in action, although a trip to Old Trafford is hardly the ideal start; especially with Man City to follow in Week 3.

Anyway, from a fantasy perspective I definitely feel like there is a better selection of fixtures this weekend with no fewer than 6 games looking like they have a reasonably clear favourite. Let's get in to them right away...

Wins
EVERTON v Queens Park Rangers
CHELSEA v West Brom

MAN CITY @ Bolton
ASTON VILLA v Blackburn
MAN UTD v Tottenham
STOKE @ Norwich

I don't want to write off QPR completely after one match but they did look out of their depth last weekend in the 4-0 drubbing by Bolton. Neil Warnock has found it difficult to bring enough quality in to his squad and Goodison Park is an incredibly tough place to go at the best of times, never mind for your first away game back in the top tier. You have to fancy Everton in front of their own fans for the first time this season, so I'm classing them as a stand-out fixture.

Chelsea will want to pick up their first win of the season and I'd expect the team to lift themselves and beat West Brom for their new manager's first game at Stamford Bridge. Man of the moment Sergio Aguero should be unleashed from the start for Manchester City's trip to Bolton and their attacking flair combined with defensive solidity must make them favourites here.

Aston Villa started with a decent draw at Fulham last weekend but will know they need to win home fixtures such as this if they want to avoid another relegation battle. Blackburn couldn't beat Wolves on their own patch last Saturday and Bent, N'Zogbia & Albrighton should have too much for them this weekend. Spurs never win at Old Trafford so I'm predicting another comfortable home win for the defending Champions and I reckon Stoke will out-battle Norwich at Carrow Road (sorry Delia).

Draws/Too Close To Call
Arsenal v Liverpool
Sunderland v Newcastle
Swansea v Wigan
Wolves v Fulham

Four games that look extremely tight to me; Arsenal v Liverpool should be a cracker but a draw seems very possible, the Tyne-Wear derby will be a fiery affair which could see both teams cancel each other out, Swansea and Wigan will both try to play football the right way so it should be entertaining but again I can see a draw and Wolves v Fulham has 1-1 written all over it. I may even put a four draw accumulator on these fixtures.

With the fixture analysis done, lets look at the players...

KEEPERS
Howard
De Gea
Given

Pretty obvious why the three keepers above are recommended - Howard has the pick of the fixtures at home to QPR and is priced OK at around 8.5. Everton are quite solid at home so I'd fancy a clean sheet if I picked the Toffees stopper in net for Week 2. I probably won't pick him thought because I'm giving Mr De Gea another chance.

The young Spaniard has been quite terrible so far and reminds me of the lanky kid at my school who we stuck in goal just because he was tall (he was rubbish too), but I'm willing to give him one more week - he's Manchester United's keeper after all and it seems silly to dump him already when he returned a positive score and he's still dirt cheap. The defensive injuries in front of him are a concern, but as I've stated, Spurs never win there so you should be safe this week.

The other option is Shay Given at home to Blackburn, although we await news on the groin injury he picked up in his man of the match display at Fulham. Villa have a very decent chance of a clean sheet but seeing as Given is the most expensive of the keeper picks at almost 10.00 and a doubt at this stage you'll probably only be picking him if you grabbed him on the barndoor.

DEFENDERS
Baines
Bosingwa
Gibbs
Warnock
Smalling
Heitinga

Richards
Riise

Woodgate
Brown

I really like the options in defence this week and we start with the only man in the list costing double figures, Leighton Baines.

People may scoff at the thought of spending over 17.00 on a defender, but the guy takes free kicks, corners and penalties, has a great home fixture and the added bonus of potential clean sheet points. Ashley Young (for example) doesn't have all that going for him yet we were happy pay the same price for him last week, so Baines is worth thinking about.

Next up is current Chelsea right-back and old fantasy favourite Jose Bosingwa, priced around 9.00 but with a good fixture; we just need to check Ivanovic isn't ready to return. Arsenal's Kieron Gibbs is still cheap but picked up a hamstring strain last night so is currently 50-50, and Stephen Warnock is a man who hasn't appeared in this list for some time but is back in favour under McLeish and the most affordable Villa defender.

I referred to Manchester United's injuries earlier and they'll definitely be without Ferdinand, Rafael and possibly Vidic. This means Phil Jones, Fabio & Jonny Evans all have a chance of appearing, but Chris Smalling is my pick of the bunch and is just 6.14. Heitinga is the most affordable Everton defender at 5ish and the same goes for Richards at City, although he'll cost you over 9.

Stoke's new signing Jonathan Woodgate managed to stay fit for a whole 90 minutes and was very impressive against Chelsea so he could be a good outsider to fill a defensive spot and has a winnable game at Norwich, while Wes Brown is a fantastic filler option, still priced below 4.00, and with a home fixture.

MIDFIELDERS
Cahill
N'Zogbia
Lampard/Malouda
Young/Nani
Silva
Larsson
Pennant

Walcott
Moses/Watson
Taarabt
Hoolahan
Ramsey
Delph

At the top of the midfielders list is a player who will usually give you all or nothing - a double strike and 22 points or a yellow card and -3. I'm assuming he'll be back supporting the striker again this season so for a home game against QPR and priced below 10.00 I'm risking it, and he's my top pick. I also really like N'Zogbia at home to Blackburn, although he'll cost you a bit more.

There's not a lot to chose between the next 4 players in the list - Nani & Young will probably share duties and score similar points throughout the season and the same can be said for Lampard and Malouda. They all have a good fixture and are all priced around the same at 18ish, so it's really going with your gut if you want a premium midfielder.

David Silva had been City's best player on Monday but he came to life even more when Aguero came on, so I'll be keeping him for the long-haul to see how that one pans out. Seb Larsson scored a beautiful volley and was taking set pieces at Anfield so I like him at home to Newcastle, while Pennant will take over duties at Stoke with Etherington's shoulder injury keeping him out and has a good fixture at Norwich.

Moses is the cheaper Wigan midfield option but Watson will be on free kicks and penalties if you want to pay a bit more for that scoring potential, Taarabt and Hoolahan remain great value seeing most of their team's play will go through them and Ramsey is a bargain playing the Cesc role for Arsenal, just 4.33. Walcott is also a decent shout after his performance last night, but 13+ might be a bit much. Delph's a filler option.

STRIKERS
Aguero
Saha/Beckford
Rooney

Bent
Torres
Suarez
Sinclair
Holt

I don't need to go in to detail on Sergio Aguero - he's already fantasy gold, you should've barndoored him for 6 but if you didn't get the chance then you must bring him in at 11 and keep him forever. Dzeko and Balotelli will probably share time, so they both miss out. If you want an Everton forward against QPR then it remains to be seen if it'll be Saha or Beckford, assuming Moyes goes 4-4-1-1. We await team news but either one will be a decent pick.

Wayne Rooney is pricey but has a great record against Spurs and I expect that to continue. Another fine choice is Darren Bent, who should have a good chance to open his account for the season at home to Blackburn. He costs 7.00 less than Rooney so if you're struggling for funds he's a great alternative. Fernando Torres looked sharp against Stoke so it would seem harsh if he lost his starting spot to Drogba, but Villas-Boas will be trying to keep everyone happy while he works out his best XI. I still think Torres will start but we need to see what the manager reveals in his press conference.

We've spoken about Manchester United' defensive worries, but it's the same story at Arsenal with Gibbs & Djourou both injured - could Squillaci be called on? If so Luis Suarez remains a very tempting choice despite a tough away fixture and a high price. At the lower end of the scale I quite like Sinclair & Holt playing their first homes Premier League games for promoted Swansea and Norwich respectively.

That's it for this week's players. We have some Europa League games still to played before the deadline, so any injury / team news we get over the next 48 hours will be fully detailed in my Friday Update post.

My own team currently looks like this:

Dea Gea, Brown, Heitinga, Richards, Moses, Silva, Cahill, A.Young, Torres, Bent, Aguero

I think it's a good starting point but a lot will depend on whether Torres is still set to start ahead of Drogba. If not then I'll need to do some major re-jigging as I definitely want a Chelsea player in there somewhere. Gibbs could still come back in for Brown or Heitinga if his injury clears up, I'm undecided between Moses & Taarabt, Bent isn't a certainty, but De Gea, Richards, Silva, Cahill, Young & Aguero are all likely to stay.

I'll leave it there for now but as mentioned I'll be back on Friday with all the team and injury news.

How's your own team looking? Anyone you think I've missed from the lists above? Who's your hunch for Week 2?

Cheers,
AM

I have been trying to find out news about VdV but can't find any! I am assuming he will be playing and in that case, he might be a good option who is cheaper than Young/Nani. I really would like to know what is up with VdV.

Also, I have a hunch that Krul will score a lot of points for the coming weeks. I think I am going to have him.

Assistant Manager said...

Hey mate - Spurs play Hearts tomorrow night in Europa so you'll get a better idea about VDV fitness but for me he's too expensive in a really difficult away game. Also don't fancy Krul but if he's hunch then go for it :)

Happy hump day ladies and gents...a slightly disappointing 84.5 points in week one for the mighty Electric Mayhem FC but, as AM and many others have already reported, scores were down across the board on the opening weekend so I can't be too disappointed. RvP and BFAY were disappointing (fantasy-wise only for BFAY...he was immense for United and was unlikely to not have a monster day) given the cash splashed on them but Dzeko saved the day (incidentally, thoroughly unimpressed with him...he looked like he had concrete in his boots all game).

Currently sitting on:

DDG
Gibbs Brown Baines
N'Zog Taarabt Silva Moses BFAY
Aguero Torres

Quite like the look of that team although may switch a few pieces to:

DDG
Gibbs Brown Richards
N'Zog Taarabt Cahill VdV
Aguero Torres Suarez

Undecided for the time being...Baines/Moses/BFAY/Silva --> Richards/Cahill/VdV/Suarez? I think Baines could be a major differential this week for the managers that suck it up and select him despite his price tag...AM's analysis of paying that much for a defender is spot on (think of him as a MF on everything for his team, playing at home against a promoted side who also has the bonus of CS points). I suppose his allure as a pick is downgraded slightly if Arteta is in fact fit an will feature against QPR. I just feel VdV is going to nick a goal at Old Trafford given the unsettled backline for United but I agree with AM, the chances of Spurs getting a result in their opening game are slim to none. Notwithstanding the tough road fixture, I see Suarez and Carroll lighting up Arsenal and a potentially high scoring draw in North London...still, I may wait for the BD. I really think Moses, Silva and Taarabt are worth holding in the 5-8 range...that looks to be serious value in the long term. Moses and Tarrabt had 11 shots between them in their opening games...only 2 were on target but that's bound to change.

Hard to believe it's been a year since Spurs were playing on the turf at Young Boys of Bern. Sniff.

Thank You for the reply about VdV! I had forgotten about the Hearts game but I feel better about it now.
The only reason I want to go for VdV is because he will be taking those free kicks and probably trying a few long range shots and we all know how De Gea handles those. But I am not totally sold on him yet so will see after tomorrow.

Anyway, my provisional team (it will most likely be subject to change):

Krul
Richards/Brown/Riise
Silva/Cahill/Hoolahan/VdV
Aguero/Suarez/Torres

Still undecided between Torres and Saha but if I go for Saha, I might get Howard or De Gea instead of Krul.

Excellent player picks post AM.

My team is currently this...

De Gea / Richards, Brown, Baines / Larsson, Cahill, O'Hara, Moses / Sinclair, Aguero, Suarez

I really like it!

De Gea - will stay for the time being, since he is playing for the champions, results are a little more predictable, he should return more than his value over the course of the season.

Richards - Was a beast on Monday, if he nails the starting spot down, an attacking City defender at 7.XX is gold.

Brown - Filler, but if Gibbs is fit, he'll take his place.

Baines - Should get many attacking points and has a chance at a clean sheet.

Larsson - His first home game at his new club, taking kicks, although i'm still not sure about him.

Cahill - Should be good for a goal, I hope.

O'Hara - My dark horse pick, Wolves are a different team this season, I think he could do very well in home games.

Moses - I'll give him another chance.

Sinclair - Returned 7 points without doing much in a 4-0 away defeat. I expect him to do even better this week.

Aguero.

Suarez - Will get a chance to run at a weakened Arsenal defence, and I think he'll score points in any match-up.

My only concern here is the lack of Chelsea, but I genuinly don't know who will even start for them, and Lampard is a shadow of his former self. I may just leave well alone and hope my picks outscore them.

Cheers!

AM, sorry to hear about you being under the weather. Hope you're back to full health!

Player picks are spot on, there seems to be a lot of choice this year. It's going to be really tough making decisions on season keepers, what discounts to keep, who to chase.

I've got Watson in, as like you say, he's all over set pieces. I got him before BD, so likely to keep him, at least until Moses shows some sort of good scoring.

What do you think about Fabio, given his cheap price, or do you worry that he'll be out the side in 2 weeks?

Also, I picked up Formica, who played really well, and seems to be a support striker. Appreciate it's not an easy match up, but possibly one to keep? Or are there better alternatives around?

Must haves for me are:
Aguero
Silva
Richards
Cahill

Assistant Manager said...

Racs - I worry with Evra back they may go Smalling, Evans, Jones, Evra & Fabio gets benched, but thinking about it Evans is probably the most likely to sit

I'm away at V festival this weekend so I'll have little time to rearrange my squad - it looks like.

De Gea
Gibbs/ Brown/ Baines/ Heitinga
O'Hara/ Cahill/ N'Zogbia/ Silva
Bent/ Aguero

I did have 5 across the midfield and quite fancied Van der Vaart against De Gea but I think I'll risk the differential of Baines this week!

Hai Nik...

thanks to you because i manage to got 110 points in 1st week for the team which called "Champion The 19th".. you help me a lot.. =)

Dave Collier said...

Current team on page:

DDG
Warnock, Richards, Brown
Silva, Young, Cahill, Watson
Aguero, Rooney, Sinclair

Dave Collier said...

AM, yeah, I don't think it's good long term. I did hear Evra was out for 2 weeks, which if true, Fabio will definitely play. Not really a long term pick, but certainly better than Gibbs, given the match ups.

Choices for me are:
1. DDG or Given. If Given, i'll sell Warnock.
2. Is Bosingwa fit? If so, i'll keep
3. Young or Baines?

As you didn't manage to BD, do you think that affects your thinking with the player picks? I.e., Bosingwa @ 8.41 or Rooney @ 18.38 or Warnock @ 7.54 suddenly become more attractive options than at current prices.

Ken M. said...

Lost a few nice discounts due to a major mental error..don't ask.

With that said I am happy with the following:

Howard
Riise/Heitinga/Wilson
Silva/Zogbia,Malouda/Cahill/Pennant
Aguero/Sinclair

Good feeling about Pennant and worked hard to make sure he fit in.

Worries: Feel Carroll is due and still feel I am missing something by not having Suarez on my team. I am sure that will work itself out soon!
Also..Bent, but I am still put off on him from last year. Never scored when I had him..EVER!
Torres..until he hits the net I might as well have a 6 point defender. So then, why I'm I looking at him??
Baines..Will have a good day, but it's possible it will only be 6 points better then Heitinga...it's possible!

As of now, Carroll is my main focus regarding change but I am happy with my line up.

Good luck all

Team as of now...

DeGea (until he gets benched or hurt/United are winners)

Kibbs (cheap/starts when healthy)
Fabio (cheap/healthy/think he will start again)
Richards (attacker/Hoping he will lock down position)

Silva (Effective/combines well with Aguero)
Taraabt (Looking for improvement in team)
Young (love the potential/attacking style)
Watson (PKs/Freekicks/Corners)

Aguero (season keeper)
Suarez (Best attacker on team w/improved attack/porous gunner defense)
Torres (Hope he starts/Need a Chelsea player)

Any thoughts??

Was also thinking of RVP/watson/Brown instead of Torres/Watson/Richardson

I think that whether Arsenal win, lose or draw that RVP will score on Liverpool as he usually does in big matches for the gunners.

So, Cesc gets his £35 million trophy after just 10 min with Barca! Didn't take long. Wenger has been heard saying: D'oh!

Anyway, I'm still not sure what to do this week after a very mediocre first week of only 65.5 pts after splashing cash on some big names.

So, I went the opposite this week, but this is crazy. I have a starting XI and still 22.58 left over! Obviously some changes are needed:

DDG
Gibbs-Riise-Smalling
Taarabt-Moses-Silva-Cahill
Sinclair-Suárez-Agüero

DDG - (Another chance? Maybe. Haven't given up on him, but with all the extra cash may switch for a better matchup, and then BD him back.)

Gibbs - (injury doubt...wait and see)
Riise - (Fulham not as good on the road, but against Wolves, CS still possible)
Smalling - (May splash the cash and upgrade him to Baines)

Taarabt - (Not sure...Larsson?)
Moses - (Willing to give him another shot. Cheap and against Swansea)
Cahill - (Put him in after reading your post, but still not sure. May go for N'Zog here)
Silva - (Silva + Agüero = season keepers)

Sinclair - (Looked good for hapless Swansea, will get more chances against Wigan)
Suárez - (Can score on anybody. Season keeper)
Agüero - (See Silva)

I can't imagine actually settling for a team with 22.58 left over, so changes still to come. Will read a few more blogs and figure it out...

Given - (BD'ed him)

Riise - (will take some free kicks, likes to go up and shoot, possible clean sheet)
Micah - (Played really well defensively and ran up front at the right time)
Baines - (Taking Nik's advice but I might downgrade to Gibbs if Gibbs plays and get VdV in)

Moses - (It was between him and Taarabt but Taarabt is against Tim Howard on the road)
Cahill - (Again going with Nik's suggestion hoping Cahill might score well at home against QPR)
Yaya Toure - (I have him at just over 7 and he will take shots on goal)
Silva - (Will have fun scoring with Kun)

Kun - (Will have fun scoring with Silva)
Dzeko - (Having him on a discount and will profit from Kun and Silva's work. Will put one in for sure)
Suarez - (Will humiliate ArseAnal's defense, just hoping he doesn't humiliate himself by missing PKs)

Gibbs - Smalling - Heitinga
Taarabt - Silva - Cahill - Malouda
Aguero -Suarez - Torres

Still waiting for news on Gibbs and if something would come up on wheather Torres is starting.

Ken M. said...

Trust me when I say I understand the need for "inexpensive" defenders. I also guarantee that I'm as guilty as the next on this point..
But...

If Gibbs does start and you select him onto your team while all along stating that Arsenal defense will be scored on by Suarez, who I also feel is a great choice, and he on your team, are you not risking a possible "negative" score? Alternative choices of both Brown & Fabio look acceptable?

Personally, I would feel an intentional zero would be better and use those extra funds for whatever.

I know we all have at some time attackers going against our defense but hopefully that defender will offer up more then just a potential clean sheet which in this case has already been "ruled out" by the inclusion of Suarez?

Not a suggestion..just an observation.

Top picks AM. Here's my current team:

Given - Hope he's fit to play, want to keep him for a while yet.

Riise - Potential season keeper for me. Attacking, loves to shoot, playing in defensively tight team.

Brown - Expect him to exceed his 3pt cost - all you can ask for.

Bosingwa - Attacking, big chance of clean sheet. Bargain @8.41. Need to keep close eye on Ivanovic.

Baines - Why not? As many have said he's a stud player with a chance of a clean sheet. Great to have set-piece/pen taker on my team.

Taarabt - Season keeper for sure. He will explode soon.

Ramsey - @4.33 how can you not? Will be involved in many Arsenal goals this season.

Larsson - Not cheap @12.48 but i think he's worth it. Goal scoring threat, plus you can never have enough set piece takers.

Fletcher - Brought him into my team even before he scored last week. End of last season he left a good impression on me. Still, most likely player to be dropped.

Rooney - United, at home, penalty taker, rooney, ta.

Aguero - A very risky pick. Awful player at an awful price but i think i'll take a gamble. ;-)

Assistant Manager said...

Ken - defenders don't lose points for conceding goals. If Liverpool do win then the chances are Gibbs will still pick up a few points blocking a shot/getting forward and winning a corner etc. 3 points returns his value. As an attacking full-back he has the potential to score more points then Wes Brown if neither gets a clean sheet. Fabio is another matter - if he's set to start I think he's a better pick than Gibbs.

@Greginho--

For me, the menu of midfielders available in Bosingwa's price range is not overly compelling. He is likely to score as well as any of them, particularly with Odemwingie not expected to feature this weekend. I would probably keep him, especially if you hold him at a discount.

Who are your other defenders though? I generally don't like carrying four.

Got a question guys you barndoor players before their value goes up when the points are calculated. Are discounts applied to the previous scoring week or the new week with the barndoored squad? Would you have got more discount if you hadn't barndoored players?

Hellow fellow AM-ers,

First post since the start of the season. Nik, this is probably the best player picks post I've ever read since I joined the blog 2 seasons ago when I started playing YFF. Congrats!

Back to the season - pretty average 1st week with 79.5 but I'm not complaining! I love my team for this week and I feel confident that it will score good:

DDG
Brown,Riise,Smalling
Silva,Taarabt,Cahill,AY
Aguero,Suarez,Torres

I have 1.9 left but I don't think I will use it!My team name is DIMITAR BERBATOV FC [AM.Blog] but I don't think he will feature a lot this season. If he starts on Monday though, I'll buy him immediately.

Good luck to all!

@ chaos-also, and this had me confused for a year, if it hits the bar or post its not an SOT. Nothing drives me crazier than watching a game when a guy you have takes a shot and hits the bar.

4 defenders is a mistake in my view. If you want to take defenders who play or score like midfielders like Baines or Bale last year then that's great, take them as defenders but use the space they take up in the defence to get more mf fw players..

Just look at average scores from last year, GK 6.x DF 7.x MF FW 10.x

Pick as few defenders as you can in my view, and make them attacking sp pen assist types!!

greginho said...

kendo my other defenders besides bosingwa are smalling, riise and gibbs. i was not able to barndoor for the weekend so i picked up smalling early saturday morning and got bosingwa and on sunday when i had a minute on the computer. i had to drop richards to get bos in though. gibbs is at full price. i am also got rooney and ben watson at full price, too.

my team is
de gea
riise, gibbs, smalling, bosingwa
taarabt, young, watson
dzeko, aguero, rooney

i can go van persie instead of rooney. van persie will score in a tie game and get a yellow card. i think rooney has a chance for a goal and an assist in another tie game. so i am chancing him.

i really like the potential for sessegnon, ramsar and cabaye, but am reluctant to replace bosingwa or watson with them.

greginho said...

sorry that was for david s not kendo

Saiful said...

@greginho

We have the same dilemma on Watson situation but I believed despite the fact that he is the FK, penalty, or even corners taker for Wigan, his high scoring pts last week was just because he scored a goal, which should be more than 15pts. It is a good points though but imagine if he did not score the goal, he would be between 3.5-5 pointer perhaps. He wasn't really scoring goals last season and will be playing away game next..hmm.
I'm considering Moses instead
