See Ya...

Just a quick post to let you know I won't be around for the next week due to Glastonbury, so you won't see any new posts until next Tuesday at the earliest.

England aside I'm really enjoying the World Cup now, the majority of games over the past week have been hugely entertaining and I'm annoyed I'll now be missing a week of crucial matches. Portugal were scary today, but we'll have to wait & see whether it was a one off - let's be honest, North Korea were shambolic.

In fantasy terms It's great to see our Blog Leaue is ranked as the 5th best league overall - http://en.mcdonalds.fantasy.fifa.com/M/stats.mc?stat=bestleagues...great effort from all the guys at the top!

Personally I've moved up to around 110th, but made the error of leaving Ronaldo on the bench today (well - it's an error unless Villa scores a hatrick tonight!), so expect to fall tonight. I won't be able to make any substitutions now, so I expect to return well down the league by next week! It's annoying as I'd just felt I'd got the hang of being successful in the game, but these things happen.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the next 7 days of football as the group stages reach their climax and the Round of 16 begins...see ya in a week!

Cheers,
AM

AM, I made the same mistake as putting Ronaldo on the bench, with Villa on!

Any suggestions from the experts on this board would be greatly appreciated. Round 1 was a cluster bleep for me. This round is better, although I swapped Fabiano for Rooney as a transfer. Talk about sheer brilliance!!! After Rooney's 'performance' the other day I put him back on the bench and put in David Villa who will hopefully score more than 4 points today.

I currently have the following lineup for round 3

Casillas
Zambrotta G. Johnson Belhadj
Sneidjer Cahill Schweinstieger Ozil
Messi Ronaldo Rooney

Viable non filler bench options are

Mucha
Chiellini Maicon
Hamsik Gorcuff
RVP David Villa

I have my eye on Matthew Upson, Didier Drogba and Daniel Alves as transfer possibilities.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am so far behind that it is unlikely that helping me will jeopardize your overall or AM blog league positions, but if that is a concern I understand.

yes Bojan South America is dominating!

Still lamenting the Kaka red and Drogba goal yesterday that cost me 15 points and a top ten spot in the AM Blog League, its amazing how far off the loss of 15 points will throw you...I would have been sitting pretty now I am 67th out of the 463 in the League and in 26,000th overall....ouch!

Jun 20. In the last game of Group B, on Tuesday 3:30 pm against Greece, Argentina would line up: Romero; Burdisso (Jonás suspended), Otamendi (Samuel, fully recovered from injury, will be rested), Demichelis, Clemente Rodríguez (Heinze rests because of yellow card); Maxi Rodríguez, Bolatti (Mascherano rests because of yellow card), Verón; Messi, Agüero, Diego Milito.

lots of people had Gourcuff today and they cant move him!

thankfully I dropped him, hopefully the players I picked up for him (and Buddle) will do well (Koren and Lando).

Going to start looking at some options for retooling my team for the Round of 16, won't finalize til the match-ups are set in stone of course.

i do have to say that the USMNT keeps getting more and more plaudits from the general folk and the announcers, down here in brasil. they treat the US in football like, they would a little brother and want to see him do well. every single brasileiro remembers that marcelo balboa's bicycle kick, almost went in when the score was still tied 0-0 against brasil. what would have happened had he put that in? would the US have gone on to win in brasil's place. most everyone is surprised that americans can even kick a ball.

I would have kept Lahm as captain. in fact, I did :p
You think Robin will score 2 today ?

Maxer said...

@madguy.. i still have ronaldo, fabiano and villa if he doesn't.. anyway, i think cameroon is an easy opponent and netherland can easily score 2 goals over.. and if not rested, rvp could at least be on the score sheet.. :)..

Asher_MaXTeN

bean said...

think CRon against Brazil can outscore Messi's 5 points?

SK said...

@bean - worth the risk.

Currently considering putting in Simao, Yaya Toure and maybe J. Yun Nam for Schweinsteiger(5), Sneijder(5) and Dempsey(5). Should I?

- SK

AdmiraLord Nelson said...

do itttt!

Maxer said...

@sk.. i would replace any players with 5points and below.. just imagine, playing at least 65minutes will already gives u 3points.. added 4points for 0 goals conceded (df)(1points for mf).. alrdy cover that 5 points.. 1points for each attacking bonus and 1points for defending bonus too.. otherwise your players get yellow, red or missed a penalty.. :)

@bean, i already dropped messi for rvp yesterday.. now my concern is should i drop rvp (capt-16points) for these 3 forwards playing today.. ronaldo, fabiano & villa.. and villa or cron as captain..

anyway, a question.. after the last group match (chile-spain & swiss-honduras) how long do we have before the next transfer & sub dateline?.. i'm in Malaysia, these asia-africa time difference always confuses me.. and i don't want to do any transfers before the last group match so that i know which team moved-on and not..

i was gonna captain David Villa against chile instead of CRon against Brazil.. but in this World Cup matchups don't seem to mean much, so I'm not sure. Have Villa at the moment.

Any thoughts on the price risers to go through at 00:00 SAST? Looks like we can still have free transfers until 13:45 SAST tomorrow... not necessary who to pick for the next round yet but who to make money on.
Right now I'm looking at
GK
Muslera, Kawashima and Stekelenberg
DF
Maicon, Carvalho, Jungsoo, Lahm, Coentrao, Demichelis, M. Pereira
MF
A. Pereira, Ozil, Elano, Tiago, Chungyong, A. Ayew, Honda, Bradley
FW
Podolski, Vittek, Robben, Ronaldo, David Villa

godd luck finding the magic formula to get that team under the budget....

and not many English in there.... you dont fancy them to beat their nemesis opponents... Germans and then potentially the Argies????

Tough to get picks for the next round and keep a balanced team with options...

Fingers crossed I dont pick another Gourcuff!!! Bloody frog cost me 10 points and top 50 spot.

Non-stud players Im looking at...

Honda
Alcaraz
Milner
Sanchez

on top of ones I already had...
Chungyong
Dempsey
Vera
Franco

What do we think about any other good value spots??

99 points for Round 3, 48th in AM group.

My team for Round 4:

Muslera
Maicon M. Perreira Cherundolo
Bradley Sneijder A. Perreira Dempsey
Messi Forlan Fabiano

Sub:
Stekelenburg, Kawashima
Bastos, Van Der Weil, Komano
Kaka, Honda, Vera
RVP, Villa

Any comments or suggestion ?? Actually im fancy Donovan for this round.

Thanks

Anonymous said...

@Worzel, I had several of those players since the 1st round, my team budget is up to 151.9 after the latest price update. I didn't keep all of them for this next round though, just used the for the price update, made 2.0 out of a possible 2.3.

Now comes the tricky part of actually setting my roster for the knockout round. Do you take players on opposite teams to ensure having a full squad going forward or gamble on certain teams to win to have more flexibility in the next round?

Currently with
GK
Muslera, Kawashima, Stekelenberg - I think both Muslera and Stekelenberg have good chances for CS this round.
DF
Younghyung, Cole, Lahm, M. Pereira, Coentrao, Ramos, Maicon - Trying to get defensive players that will get points for the attacking runs and not just relying on the CS for points.
MF
Chungyong, Dos Santos, Bradley, A. Ayew, Kaka, Honda, Tiago, Xabi Alonso
FW
Messi, Podolski, Vittek, Sanchez, Robben

At least that's where I'm at right now. Worst case I have 9 players advance with 4 free transfers to come in.

muslera
m. pereira cherundolo a.cole
lampard veron dempsey özil
messi donovan forlan(c)
subs: kawashima; demichelis, van der wiel, tulio; sneijder, kaka, honda; van persie, fabiano.

I decided to just stay away from Spain and Portugal, with the exception of David Villa...I would love to have Ronaldo too but I feel the Dutch strike force is more reasonable against Slovakia.
I have put all my faith into Uruguay and Japan if they both lose I am screwed, but if one of them lose then I am using all my free transfers on either one. I have also further jeopardised myself by having 2 Germans against England! Could not resist the urge to fill the last spot of my roster with Khedira after picking two Japanese keepers and freeing up alot of cash! If England are to win and Uruguay and Japan both lose I will be making 10 transfers in Round 5 build-up!!!!

On a better note I have found a way to get all of these great stars in my squad:

Kaka, Bastos, Maicon, Sneijder, Robben and Van Persie!!!(I have a good feeling about these players)

this could all still change between now and Round 4 deadline, ThoughtS?

@Admiral - this is tough to say the least. i had veron in for a bit, but ended up going with milner as a risky pick. i basically just picked who i thought would win and had the best chance to semifinals. so went with USA,Netherlands,Germany,Spain with others sprikled in:

muslera,neuer,kawashima
maicon,lahm,pereira,vanderwiel,coentrao,cherundolo,alcaraz
dempsey,elano,vanbommel,sergio,pereira,honda,milner,ayew
davidvilla,messi,robben,podolski,altidore

i'm hoping Japan can win vs. Paraguay so i don't have to lose transfers on those two, then i only have contrao, alcaraz, milner, ayew as assumed disposables since i predict them to lose (at least so i could settle on a squad)

i think it's best to do with your gut and make sure to spread the risk around, but pick the bracket to the semifinals or else it's just too much to proces..

good luck all!

Good Luck All is right! As You All Will Need It, Luck that is...

looking at the lines Bean, and we should be fine...but that's just odds!

I don't know if I agree with sprinkling players around from teams that you expect to lose, but that may off fine!

I am still susceptible to making changes as long as I am up all night playing poker on Bodog, I may just pull an all-nighter as I don't have anything to do but a gingerly 30 miles tommorow morning before the games!

So I'll be around to talk before the Deadline....

i got 3 fillers, also i sold villa for this round, i see portugal vs spain very low scoring game, very close and maybe even penalties.
i think your squad is great, perfect balance in my opinion, but this fantasy is quite hard, really have to think and have luck.
good luck to all.

AdmiraLord Nelson said...

@CFCBOSS, much appreciated I do not see any reason to change it yet as it took me a few days to create, even through the media bombardment that the British have thrown out to the rest of the world I still think that Germany surpass on youth and direction...but Alas! Aaron Lennon and Wayne Rooney could out do an all German defence in the Premier League any day!

CFCBOSS said...

@AdmiraLord Nelson
i think germany in their style of play suits england actually, im very scared if it goes to penalties, cause we all know, germans don't miss them and on the other hand england always loses in penalties.
im really expecting england to go through, players got the experience, defence have looked rock-solid, but i know germany is a very good team, im not underrating them.
im little bit scared the traditon, that germany always go far in a tournament and they are at their best, when it's world cup.
i really hope this world cup ends for them tomorrow :D
to all the german fans & everybody may the best win. :)

trying a crazy approach this time.. hopefully it will pay off nicely.. finger cross :)..

staying off the spain-portugal match.. by dropping two of my dream team player.. ronaldo and villa.. donovan and forlan replaces them for the (hopefully) easy matchup and discounts.. fabiano, messi and rvp stays..

got honda, ozil, a.ayew, elano and sneijder at mf with abe, matsui and vera as filler.. jisung, chungyong and d'maria dropped.. and also kaka last minute due to money restrictions..

van der wiel, lahm, demichaelis, maicon, m.pereira and fillers victorino and jungsoo at df replacing only a.cole since everyone else are disqualified..

dropped casillas for romero, muslera and filler kawaguchi at gk..

anyway, good luck everyone.. cheersss..

suarez waa one of my first 10 picks.

it is kinda shitty to see a south korean midfielder, chung yong lee, that i put on my bench, score a header past my goalie, muslera. i started instead pareiera. that was 3 points instead of 9.

greginho said...

now i am going to rate my original first ten chosen, that i wanted no matter what the cost. i bought these 10 then filled in the team.
Van Persie 17 pts. 1 goal 1 assist
Van Bronckhorst 17 pts 2CS
Dempsey 16 pts. 1 famous goal.
Villa 29 pts. 3 goals 1 assist
Suarez 19 pts 1st 3 rounds 2 goals
14 pts more in round 4 2 goals
Luis Fabiano 20 pts. 2 goals
Dani Alves 13 pts. 1CS
Hamsik 12 pts. 1 assist
Fabregas 3 pts.
Gourcuff 2 pts.

what a mixed bag that was. players like messi, whom i love, and christiano ronaldo, whom i hate, i didn't trust to do well for their national teams. i didn't think that wayne rooney was worth picking, as i didn't see england playing well, with the john terry and other squabbles. i also avoided robben, for obvious reasons. if robben was healthy he would have been first choice.
i knew ribery was carrying a injury, so i thought that would leave the creative duties to gourcuff, who had a brilliant first half of the year and an average second half after getting two nagging injuries. hamsik is the dominant midfielder in italy, along with schneider. hamsik also scores many freekick goals for his national team, but slovakia didn't offer much. fabregas and dani alves, whom i both love and will be dominating next to each other for some years, fall into the same category. the i didn't think that players that great, would not start for the national teams, category. of course i had dani alves, starting in the first two games and dropped him to the bench for game 3, which he starts and gets 10 points. maicon lost his confidence for 10 months and dani alves was better, but maicon got it back for the last 8 weeks. cesc is such a good player, i just never thought that he wouldn't be out there, especially with iniesta carrying a knock. spain certainly didn't play scintillating football, in a very weak group. so maybe the coach will realize how much they need him, but it is too late, he is gone in round 4 for Honda, who is my captain.

greginho said...

can the US, stop letting in early goals? the substitution putting feilhaber in, has made the difference and let the US take over the midfield. now ghana is going to the US's first half plan of cross high balls from wide areas. it didn't work for the US and it didn't work for Ghana

bean said...

man that was a tough loss. why can't we ever play the game in the first half? and the stupid defensive mistakes just keep happening, bocanegra just gave up on that winning goal. how bradley sr. decided to start clark i have no idea.

ghana was the better team today, but that time wasting shit was ridiculous...

i sure hope japan wins, otherwise it's going to be tough to salvage the fantasy squad within the four transfers... challenges ahead.

AdmiraLord Nelson said...

who was the Ghanain idiot who got on the strecther and as soon as they got him to the sideline he got off the strecther and walked!?! wtf? unsportsmanlike, the behavior of a scared team...scared of a late goal

they are just as bad as the Ivorians IMO

CFCBOSS said...

113' Inkoom is, unsurprisingly, off his stretcher now. He comes off though, Muntari on in his place.
112' Inkoom is carried off on a stretcher. Ghana will make a sub anyway, Muntari is getting ready to come on.

to be honest it's typical way to spend time, acting like they're dead and after they get sent to the sideline, it's like a miracle healing :D
ordinary approach to the game, can't really blame them, most of teams do it.

fantasy wise, i had donovan, dempsey, usa defender, donovan produced well, other two won't stay.
big question, i had muslera, but got me only 4 points, should i risk to go with kawashima?

AdmiraLord Nelson said...

I think you have to go with Kawashima as Paraguay couldn't score on New Zealand while only resting one or two!

i have both Robben and RVP to go tommorow and I have Messi and Forlan already...I think it is no surprise that in when you have somany great strikers on your team you are gonna have to make some changes that seem risky, but do you think that Slovakia can stop RVP or Robben that is the question you should ask yourself, Good Luck!

SK said...

Always hard to predict how a guy starting for the first time after injury will do. I have to say that 9 pts may be pushing it for RvP unless you wish to captain him, because he pretty much needs at least an assist or goal to match that.

Currently have Suarez, Messi and RvP in, with Sanchez and Villa let. Should I bench Messi for Sanchez? I mean if RvP does well tomorrow, I will still give up 8 pts to start Villa.

with USA knocked out, and my wildcard ayew suspended, i'm stuck with how to fill the empty spots in my squad with the 4 free transfers. I had 3 U.S. players, Ayew suspended, and a portugal and paraguay player who i expect to be sent home. My question is this, what is everyone's strategy moving forward? are you taking the point deductions and replacing all of your players that have been knocked out? or holding some or your eliminated players and just trying to have a full squad without the full amount of substitutes? the way it's looking for me is i would have to take a (-9) point hit to refill my squad, that's if all goes well and japan wins...

@bean

I would not do a 100% refill of my squad. I rather look at what formation you should change to in order to make the most of what you have left.

However, depending on which strategy you pursue, you may want to consider refilling a part of your team--defense for example. I am not keeping any dead weight on defense, and I will always retain 2 GK who play on different days. So I used 1 xfer for defense (filler price defender S Korea out Uruguay in), and I will have to get in a GK since Howard is out and Japan may be eliminated.

5 players on roster going tomorrow: Kawashima, Honda, Komano, Caniza, and David Villa...but only will use 3...cant decide whether to drop Uruguayan Defender Periera(5 pts) for Caniza or Komano, both players not big points machines...definitely relying on Villa and Honda to get me where I need to be :)...is that wishful thinking or what?

Maxer said...

@bean.. i got jungsoo, a.ayew n donovan to drop and today hoping japan got trough and i only have to drop vera of paraguay from my team.. if japan loses i have to drop kawaguchi, honda, abe and matsui too.. meaning 7players.. if such case arise, i would choose my 4 most expensive players from these so that i can replace them with better players from other team..

anyway, i'm happy yesterday one of my fav team; Netherland got through.. but fantasy wise i'm sad that rvp didn't play till the end.. robben stole the limelight from everybody with rvp the playmaker for the attacks.. when robben is sub, rvp follows 10 minutes later.. if he still on the field surely he can do some more serious damage to slovakia and earn more fantasy points.. anyway, sneijder did good and van der wiel was at 9points before that penalty.. :(

Mehicoradio said...

ouch, realized I chose RvP over Sneijder (less people owned RvP, thus if he scored well move up more). And ended up losing out on 7 points (by the way, anyone notice Sneijder got a point for conceding 0 goals....when they did? xD)

AdmiraLord Nelson said...

hahaha...he did!

about the sneijder 1 point for the second time, same thing happened with kaka, against north-korea, it was i think, kaka got sub and then they scored, but kaka still got he's bonus.

so i guess, if your player gets subed before other team scores, then you'll get the clean sheet, bonus e.g
but have to play like 60+ minutes or so.

fantasy-wise, got honda, tulio, kawashima, this round really seems to be average for me, some bad calls.

I thought about the strategy after the group stages, looked at match ups and focused on Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain and Portugal, who I expect to make up the semi finals. Got a few Germans, Paraguayans thrown in too. Using free transfers to change players who go out (eg Milner from England) but won't use any points on it... there is plenty room for a good number of non-players - my problem is having too many to play and dropping the wrong players...

I can't decide whether 5 points is a good number to hold or not. Currently I have been dropping 5 and under but I think that should be 4 and under...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I'm not doing so well but I think I like this game...

99 points with Villa to go! Finally having a good round

Wohoo, my decision to use Japan and Paraguay player was correct !96 with Villa to go !

Somehow earned 60 points today resulting in a solid 108. I have 9 players who won't be playing next week of which 1 is suspended and 1 filler. I am keeping Kawashima as a filler because of his price and swapped Stekelenburg for Casillas. Probably use 1 or 2 extra transfers because I have a max 3 MFs playing. Hoping to end up with 2-5-6-5 or 2-6-5-5 players available for the QFs.

i was hoping for Uruguay/Netherlands Germany/Spain semifinal. Not really sure Netherlands can take Brazil, more of a hope that Brazil don't go on to win this thing AGAIN.

almost forgot there will be 5 points added to our banks before the semifinal.

after this round I took a (-6) point hit to cushion my squad a little bit more.

here's who I have playing:

07/02
Muslera
VDW,Maicon,Bastos,M.Pereira
VanBommel,KPB,A.Pereira,Rios
Robben,Suarez

07/03
Neuer
Ramos,Alcaraz
Iniesta,Sergio
Villa,Messi,Podolski

little worried about being so heavy with Uruguay, but had to take the risk to get cheap players with good potential to make it through. Also having 3 Netherlands players is a risk, but i'm banking on them winning..

also strangely hoping Robben Suarez don't score well because it will be tough to leave one or any of Villa,Messi,Podolski on the bench

After the dissapointing revelation that Doc Teeth and others have come to realise over the past few days we are struggling to fit in enough good players while planning for the semi-finals as well! This game is also alot about where you will be in the next round whilst picking for the current round!

What is that revelation you may ask? After realising how tight the $$$ is now, it sure would be nice to have a few dead weight players left on your roster like say a few No. Koreans or a few New Zealanders to free up the $$$, instead we are struggling to try and fit the most expensive players in our rosters while barley having enough to fill an 11 man squad! The truth is, that most of the players left that have any chance of advancing are the most expensive players in the game, so it is basically impossible to have the maximum 8 players from say a team like Spain. Instead of that I have taken the usual approach and risked it on a less expensive team like that of the Uruguayans as I fancy their chances against Ghana.

had to make many changes, like 7 transfers.

my hunch is dani alves, cause he seems to play against netherlands and as a attacking winger, listed defender, great.
luckily for me, i was that clever that i kept two from new zealand and one from north-korea in my squad. :D
this game is really hard, have to luck with decisions really, really getting upset every round or so.

drop really2 far after this round.. went to 46 from 4 in Am blog group.. but its been fun doing all the transfers, substitution and anticipation of every game.. :).. anyway, too bad the penalty kickoff goals are not calculated in the team points.. otherwise honda can get 8points (x2 because i capt him).. hmm..

anyway i have 7 players to go.. all the expensive one will goes first.. :p

Well, I am now banking heavily on Spain doing well vs. Paraguay.

I got Casillas in and took Howard out--so now I have Stekelenberg and Casillas, who both play on different days.

I'm thin at MF, so I buffed with Iniesta, and I kicked out Van Persie for a filler striker from Japan. I was real deep with strikers so it's not a big loss unless RVP rips it up vs. Brazil.

I think I've hit the highest rank I'm ever gonna get (14th global)--all due to luck basically. Japan drawing with Paraguay, captain David Villa, etc...

I put [AM.blog] in my team name so hopefully ppl will recognize!

As for transfers for the semi finals obviously I am keeping the closest eye on Brazil vs Netherlands.

I don't think I'm gonna be able to maintain my high rank but it was good while it lasted!

Great move by the folks who got in Tevez instead of Messi--what a great value differential!

I too have a good balance of players for 7/2 and 7/3. I have managed to save one free transfer for the next round.
I have 3 Dutch and 3 Brazilians.
I also have 2 Germans and 2 Argentinians.
So with 5 transfers next round, I should be fine.

However this all weighs on my 5 Uruguayans winning against Ghana, as I have no Ghanaians.

I also have 2 Spaniards(all I could afford without moving my high-profile players), and 2 Paraguayan fillers.

It should be fun! I hope Brazil is more of a high scoring match than Bojan predicts it to be!

right now i'm looking at either trying to just replace the players i need to and taking a smaller hit. Or going for broke and taking the 24 point hit for this squad (broken down by team)

GK: Muslera, Romero, Barreto
DEF: Maicon, Bastos, M. Pereira, Alcaraz, Ramos, Fucile, Boateng (GER)
MID: Sergio, Xabi Alonso, J. Martinez, Ozil, Kaka, I. Ayew, Veron, Alv. Rios
ST: Suarez, Robben, Villa, Robinho, S. Fernandez
(adding Suarez, Robinho, Fernandez, J-Mart, Alonso, Sergio, Boateng, Fucile, Barreto)

Hate having the Ger/Arg players, as either way they'll have to go, but trying to limit damage when other teams get kicked. The other option is to only replace the ones kicked out and lose 12 points, but also have to deal with having 3 dutch players, 2 Argentines, 1 German, 1 Paraguay, 1 Ghana

everyone expects the Dutch to lose?!?! Kuyt Robben RVP Sneijder are losers? only if Heitenga or someone gets red early....
