Week 31 - Weekend Review

Once again, an amazing weekend in the Premiership as the title race took another massive twist. Chelsea looked to have the title sewn up a week ago, but Man United's last gasp win at Man City coupled with Tottenham's 2-1 win over the Blues has swung it right back round.

The Manchester derby was by no means a classic, but I felt City set up quite negatively & it always seemed United were in control. They also have this "never-say-die" attitude instilled by Ferguson, so it was actually no surprise when Paul Scholes popped up to win it in the 93rd minute.

I probably don't need to explain to you how delighted I am with the way Spurs have recovered from last Sunday's FA Cup disappointment vs Portsmouth. After extra time heartbreak, they bounced back vs Arsenal & then produced their best performance of the season to completely outplay Chelsea. All this with King, Woodgate, Corluka, Palacios, Kranjcar & Lennon unavailable; outstanding. I'm starting to believe 4th is possible - I know as a Spurs fan that hope is a dangerous thing to have, but with Gareth Bale in his current form I guess anything is possible.

These 2 results meant Arsenal could've been back in with a chance of the title had they sealed a routine win at Wigan on Sunday, but an unbelievable last 10 minutes saw Wigan turn around a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2, with the awful Fabianski at fault on numerous occasions. I know he's the back-up keeper, but those are basic school boy errors.

Everton kept up their impressive form by doing something nobody (including Man U & Chelsea) had been able to do since December, beating Blackburn at Ewood Park. I have to apologise if you dropped Arteta - I'd read reports that he was still injured & even Moyes said in his Friday press conference the game would come too soon for him, but he was lying - Arteta played & scored a penalty. I should've known - he did the same thing with Bily earlier in the season.

With Spurs winning & Everton closing the gap, Aston Villa had to win at Portsmouth to keep their slim hopes of 4th place alive & to ensure they don't slip out of the Top 7 to miss out on Europe altogether. This was also the game that interested us most from a fantasy stand point this week, with Villa players the most picked due to the double week. They went behind early but came back to win 2-1, Carew scoring 1 & missing a penalty too, handy points for Milner & Friedel doing well despite no clean sheet.

Sunderland sealed a 2-1 victory over a practically relegated Burnley, with goals from the usual suspects; Darren Bent & the improving Fraizer Campbell. Gordon & Hutton owners will be frustrated with the consolation goal that stole their clean sheet. Stoke threw away a lead in the final 5 minutes, with forgotten man Matthew Taylor popping up with a quick-fire brace to snatch a 2-1 win for Bolton.

Finally Birmingham v Hull & Fulham v Wolves were both fairly dull, ending 0-0, but some good clean sheet points about, which was especially pleasing for those of us who took the risk with Hull defenders.

I'm having a good week so far - 103.5 points thanks to Friedel, Warnock's assist, Bale's amazing 23.5, Dawson, Milner, Bullard, Young & Carew all performing decently. Adam Johnson & Agbonlahor were the only disappointments but I'm really pleased to have over 100 with 6 Villa & 2 Hull players still to go, back into the Top 300.

It's not all good news. I got completely hammered on Saturday & was too drunk to do any barndoor work, meaning I missed on players like Arteta & Matt Taylor, much to my annoyance when I awoke on Sunday morning. Luckily I grabbed Jussi, Jagielka & Malouda straight after the midday deadline but other than I'm going to have to pay top prices for some players.

Current team page for Week 32:
Jussi

Bale  Jagielka  A.Dawson

Malouda  Bullard  Henry (filler)  Pienaar  Taylor

Carew   Van Persie

It's a very early draft, but my keeper & defence will almost certainly stay the same. I also think I'll be keeping Malouda, Bullard & fullprice Matt Taylor. Pienaar is not so certain - I want an Everton middie but I'm not paying 19 for Arteta so it's possible he stays - and Karl Henry is just a filler for now.

Carew will probably stay, but I'm not even close to being comfortable about paying £20m for Van Persie, even though I think he may be ready to start. If I don't have the guts then I still hold Bendtner but would perhaps look to Kuyt vs Burnley or Carlton Cole at home to Wigan. I would also be able to upgrade Henry with the left over funds, probably shifting back to 3-4-3. Loads of time to decide though, so I'm not in a rush.

That's it - please let me know how the week is going for you so far. Who did you grab on the barndoor? Who do you think will win the title? Who will finish 4th?

Cheers,
AM

p.s. - I understand a Yahoo glitch has meant some people have lost their player discounts, which is not good at all. This isn't something I've experienced but my advice is to not change any of these players, contact Yahoo & hope they can correct it so you get your discounts back...my fingers are crossed for you.
UPDATE - Apparently if you've lost your discounts then click "undo changes" & you should get all your discounts back. Thanks to readers in the comment section for this - I can't check but it seems to be working for many of you...

56 points, with Downing, Dunne, Friedel, Agbonlahor, Bullard and Altidore to play. Performance so far has kept me in third in my league. But it could've been better. I swapped Arteta and Mancienne at the last minute for Sol Campbell and Altidore.

As for Moyes - grrr! Coaches can get fined and maybe suspended for lying on the injury report in the NFL!!!!!

Barn door is looking good:
Friedel,
Fox, Dunne, Knight, Hutton
A-Jo, Downing, Barndoored Arteta,
Bent, Agbonlahor, Kevin Davies

May switch Downing and Agbonlahor - I'll see what Rooney's fitness is like mid-week

**Firstly - Full appreciation to 'AM' & a generally superb blog.
Only stumbled upon (via Jeremy & Neal blog) around Xmas time & been an avid reader since.
Great Advice / Great Work / Great Blog!...& now find myself just outside the Top-100 & romping my Private League.

However - I too, have hit problems with my team. After doing a bit of barn-door work after the Saturday matches & saving changes etc.
Upon next viewing (as seemingly happened with others) - all my 'buying at' prices have disappeared & seemingly all my player discounts gone (Bale, Bendter n all)...**DISASTER!.

Have sent an e-mail to Yahoo help-desk,...but so far - NO reply.

Any Advise??...Help!!.

73 points so far with Dawson, Dunne, Bullard, Milner, Downing & Gabby still to go. Bit dissapointed but could've been worse I guess...

Not having Bale & missing him on the cheap has cost me dearly all year. Biggest mistake I've made in 4 years of YFF :-(

Current BD Team:

Jussi
Sylvinho/Jags/Hutton
Arteta/Milner/M Taylor/AJ
Kuyt/Bendtner/Bent

May swap out AJ for someone else, not sure who yet though.

My 1st post on this blog and would like to say a big THANK YOU to AM. Excellent blog with good information on players' suspensions, injuries and fixtures updates.

The player picks are also great, though i find the list of players a bit too long at times

for those having e error, juz click on undo all changes. the discounts u have on your players will be returned. but for those who had BD and did not save, you will lose your changes.

The yahoo glitch just got me. I was messing with my team and it wiped all my money extra money away. I have 3 positions open with 5.37 left to use. I had like 30.00 but it just got wiped and left me with 5.37. Has anyone else had this big of a problem.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous at 2:13pm. You are a friggin' genius! Undo all changes got my discounts back! :-)

Anonymous said...

the undo all changes did not work for me. My season has just been ended by yahoo.

Anonymous said...

For those still having problems, just keep messing with your team and your discounts should come back. On Saturday during the BD, it initially wouldn't let me add anyone being that my team value was over 100. I just canceled and did it again and eventually it worked out.

Hi A_M,

Not feeling your need for RvP, even if he was nailed on to play a shell shocked Arsenal home to Man City needing the win just doesn't excite me.

To spin it round if your close to comfortable on a £20m RvP why not be very comfortable with a £19m Arteta?

With this rationale lose Henry and Pinaar and form a four man midfield and throw three up top and those three could be Saha, Cole and Kalinic (the bolton fella) or Davies?

Fulham knackered after their Europa exersions (possible coach trip there) and then resting for the second leg, Saha against the club he fell out with, oh yes, yes please.

Currently with 103 points with 5 Aston Villa players and 2 Hull left to play their 2nd game.

Thanks to AM and all the others posters that commented on the Yahoo glitch. The "undo changes" at least saved any players that were in my team previously. I still lost all the barndoor work, which basically just means Arteta is out of price range. That's easy to live with.

I'm at 100 exactly with 10 players left to go in the Villa-Hull game.

Greatest footie week of my life...hopefully to be topped in a few weeks time when Spurs clinch 4th place. Even odds that it will happen although memories of "lasagna gate" have me fighting every overconfident instinct in my being.

Very good fantasy week for me as well as I'm sitting on 121.5 points with 5 DGers to play midweek...I'm nearly in the top 800 overall. I would say that Hutton was my pick of the week (came very close to switching him out for Gardner who returned great value for Hull as well but I'm glad I stuck with the Spurs loanee) but, in all fairness, it was my GK. I woke up in horror on Sunday morning when I discovered that David James (who I had picked as a "filler" at 1mill on the strength of multiple sources indicating Ashdown would continue between the posts) was in the starting line-up against Villa. Images of a -12 performance ran through my head. Luckily, James turned in a master class performance and returned more points than Friedel (who admittedly has another game to play). Just the good fortune that I needed. I didn't follow the approach of many other managers and held on to Tevez and Malouda at discounts which I hope will give me a bit of an advantage in the closing weeks as I expect both to continue returning big points in the home stretch.

I BDed MTay (has he earned his place back in Coyle's starting lineup?) and KPB (who I didn't realize was returning from injury...as we all know, the guy shoots on sight and away at Bolton is a decent match-up). I'd like to fit in a few West Ham players (Ilan, Upson and/or Parker, perhaps) this coming week.

I remember thinking of loading up on Man City attackers before they played Burnley away but didn't do it, didn't believe Burnley could play that terrible at home...well, I'm not making that mistake twice. It's Liverpool now or never, due or die, la creme de la creme. Got 4 players so far, G.Johnson/Maxi/Benayoun/N'gog with Kyrgiakos in my thoughts.

My team at the moment...

James(may go)
Bale/Jagielka/G.Johnson
Bullard/Boateng/Benayoun/Maxi
Kyut/Tevez/N'Gog

Have 4.47 to go but I like the team as is, James will most likely be departing and making way for Jaaskelainen. Lot of time to go till next fixture so the team will change many times.

@supercoach - You stated...

"everton players should have a good game too against tired (fulham) n liverpool players will kill burnley."

I'm with you on that and therefore I feel you should follow your instinct and build a team with some Everton/Liverpool players.

Now RVP is a big risk for that price, I was thinking about choosing him but the price/match-up is not right just yet.

I think you should have gotten N'Gog on the Barn Door but he's still pretty cheap @8.44 so you can replace RVP with N'Gog and use the spare cash to upgrade Sylvinho/Mokoena...trust me you only have 3 games left to play and you don't want to take a (0) anywhere. May I suggest Pienaar or even Saha @9.86 as well, I know he's been cold lately but I have a feeling this is his calling. Good luck!

First the good news,
I am ranked 432, with 116 points on the week with 8 players left with DP's. Agbon, Downing, Petrov, Milner, Dunne, McShane, Dawson and Friedel.
This is a great site, I just found it (unfortunately) last week.
Even more of a problem, I lost Bale at 5.45, Bentner at 5.8 and Dawson at 4.1. No amount of clicking back has restored them. I have emailed Yahoo. I guess we will see. I had planned on keeping Bale for the duration.
Anyway, here is my team (unless miracle occurs from Yahoo)
Jussi
Dawson, Mancienne, Jagielka
M. Taylor, Arteta, Wilshire, Gerard
Davies, N'Gog, C. Cole

Cheers to all, Say a prayer that Yahoo responds.

Liverpool is going to Madrid on road for their Europa League match on Thursday. It would expected to be the same journey on the way back to Liverpool on Friday. So I would avoid ALL Liverpool player this weekend except Maxi, which he did not travel to Madrid.

It would also be the same for Fulham. So I might load up Everton and Burnley players this weekend if possible.

Oh and my apologies for not posting an update to my prior lineup before the Yahoo deadline on Saturday.

I ended up swapping Bendtner for Bent as previously discussed and THANKFULLY I chickened out on Myhill and swapped him for Friedel.

I have already cashed out Dunne, Friedel, Altidore from last week's lineup and am seriously considering dropping Ashley Young and Gabby if they do not perform tomorrow night. I will probably keep Bullard either way. McShane? Who knows.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for those updates on Liverpool and Fulham. It's actually changing my team a little as I'm leaning toward Arteta instead of Gerrard.

Right now I'm looking like this:
Jussi
Bale, A. Dawson, Ferreira
Bullard, Malouda, Jarvis, Arteta
N'gog, C. Cole, K. Davies

The consideration is possibly moving Jussi/Ferreira/Arteta to something like Cech/Alex/Pienaar. It seems like almost everyone will go with Jussi this week. I expect Cech to put up huge points at home with the league title hanging in the balance. By downgrading Arteta to Pienaar, I can upgrade to Cech and upgrade the last defensive spot to a Chelsea or Bolton defender of my choosing (Alex, Ivanovic, Cahill, Knight). Besides, I'd have my team name sakes on board for the first time since the beginning of last year (which is why I named the team after him in the first place).

hello all

82 points so far with Agbon, SPet, & Friedel left to play.. not terrible, but not good. Should have gone with my hunch of James in goal for 1.00, but I didn't.. He seems like he's a save machine all of a sudden.

right now i'm thinking about:

Howard
Hutton Foley Ferreira
AdamJohn Cahill Malouda Wilshere
Tevez Bent K.Davies

entertaining dropping Tevez, maybe his complaining about Mancini's training is a distraction? although the Apache matching up with SCamp & Silvestre does sound tempting.. I would go for Adebayor playing against his old club, but I don't feel like that will happen again. That's why I stuck with Tevez against ManU, but that didn't work out..

@Caleb - Thanks for pointing that out, Liverpool players should be tired after travelling and having to play again a couple of days later. Great info.

Tevez/Ngog/Klasnic

I have 10.35 to spare. Boateng and James will most likely go, I know Boateng shoots like a maddman but everytime I put him in my team he does squat! I'm open to suggestions and information re: Klasnic would be great, is he starting?

@Caleb: Load up on Burnley Players? Okay but don't expect many points. Long Journey or not, its Burnley, and even though Liverpool haven't had the season I expected, its Liverpool, they will find a way to punish Burnley. Of the options to look at, Gerrard/Maxi (you are correct)/Ngog, Agger all look good to me. I will have NGog and Maxi almost 90% sure.

@CFCBOSS: Maxi pre-update at 7.99 is a fantastic option because he is not eligible in the cup and an alternative to Malouda/Arteta/MTAY/Bullard/Milner as a great middie pick. As for N'gog, at 6mil he is like Bendtner, doesn't need to score but can do enough to get you points. Against Burnley I'd expect N'gog to do quite well as a cheap forward option.

Kellz said...

@DarkZero: I'd go N'gog over Kuyt just because he is cheaper and thus can score better for less. Kuyt just never seems to perform when he should in terms of opposition (see Kuyt vs Wolves 0-0 draw). I think hes a bet not many will take and could prove an outside shocker, but hes not playing as the lone striker. K2 instead of Kuyt would be another option, with Arsenal's defensive problems I could see K2 scoring, but it certainly isn't ideal. All in all I'd rate N'gog 1st, K2 2nd, Kuyt 3rd.

@Anonymous: I just like to say that I agree MTAY didn't get the phantoms he normally does in the Stoke game, but, saying his goals were flukes is jumping a bit. Knocking a FK through the defense into the bottom corner takes a mighty amount of skill. As for his starting status, after saving Bolton I'd assume he will start.
