Week 25 - Monday

Only one game last night & it was one to forget for Liverpool Football Club, as they deservedly slumped to a 9th league defeat of the season against a hard working Wigan side  - the only goal of the game coming from Hugo Rodallega,

As a Spurs fan I was delighted with the result, but it was a bad night for Yahoo manager's holding Liverpool players...especially those who splashed over £30m on 2 of them.

Torres & Gerrard were booked & did little else as they scored -1.5 & 0.5 respectively. Both dropped in value to around £16m but I'm no longer excited about having either player for Week 26, despite their home game vs Portsmouth. To add to Liverpool's woes, Gerrard could be in trouble with the FA for giving the ref a v-sign after his yellow card, so we'll need to kee an eye out for a possible ban.

I barndoored Rodallega & saved changes on Kirkland before his value went up, but there are no guarantees I keep either (especially Hugo, after the triple week disaster). Still, it's nice to give myself the option.

Current barndoor team: Kirkland, Bale, Hutton, Fox, Walcott, Arteta, A Young, Milner, Bendtner, Torres, Rodallega (£1.79m left in the bank)

I think Walcott may go, possibly to a Wigan defender in a 4-3-3, but I don't want to lose Arteta. It's also possible that either Milner or Young go to N'Zogbia to allow me to get a Villa defender in & switch Kirkland (NOT to Hilario after his -9). I'm even thinking of switching Torres out to Agbonlahor, but it's probably a crazy decision, so maybe not.

I'm now sitting on 81.5 points for the week with Gordon, Hutton & Lee to go tonight, then Fox tomorrow. How are things looking for you?

Cheers,
AM

Worse score so far, only 41 ! with 0 from Bale & my hero Rooney. Only left James,Fox,Hutton and Krich.

I would like to thank Gerrard and Torres for massive points this week. Thank you again.

Too bad i dropped Wilshere and Arteta.. sigh..

I was one of those that had Torres and Gerrard. I thought this would be the game they would start to show what they are capable of. They had their best team yesterday, but lacked patience and fire. Rafa Benitez is just to much in the statistics to be a football coach. You are working with humans, not robots.

the only confirmed players on my team for next week are Bale, Hutton, Fox, Arteta, Bender, Torres and Rodallega... probably going to pick an arsenal player and two more double gamers to complete my midfield, and as for keeper i'm not sure yet.
currently 80 points with Hutton, Fox, Lee and Gordon - haha just like you AM ;)

despite recent poor form, HRod is doing amazingly well to be 3rd in the top "shots on target" rankings...just 3 behind rooney despite playing in a vastly inferior team. doesn't get enough credit for that in the media. i'm not sure about gerrards v-sign, i'm sure he was just indicating it was just his 2nd foul ;). you should have seen the gesture he did for his 1st foul ! . S.P.

Really disgusted w Liverpool's performance yesterday.

Now at 85.5 with just Hutton, James and Carlisle still to play. So figure I have an outside chance at 100 pts (especially w a clean sheet or 2).

So, I recognize that many will say that, when on his game, El Nino is the most potent striking force in the world. Certainly there have been displays of brilliance by #9 that have led me to agree with such an assessment. But, I have to say, there are many games where I watch Liverpool and I simply don't even notice that Torres is on the pitch...I call this "superstar anonymity." Just a total failure to make any impact whatsoever. Yesterday came close to being one of those games...now, granted, those that watched the game will note that he came very close to bagging a brace yesterday (one shot off of the post, one just wide right) and perhaps that can be chalked up to a bit of rust. But his runs looked poor, he was regularly knocked off the ball in challenges with the Wigan backs and his movement was devoid of any creativity. A lot of the time, he looked downright lethargic and uninspired. And, I have to say, as a matter of comparison, I have very rarely - if ever - felt this way watching Drogba and/or Rooney.

Nonetheless, I will probably keep Torres at a (now very slight) discount f or the game at home to Pompey. I'm a bit nervous about next week's games b/c: (i) I am perilously close to fielding players that are either dead to me (James Milner) or have never produced for me in YFF (Gabby) and (ii) inclusion of these players will make it very difficult to start one of the aforementioned Drogba/Rooney. Still, I would be remiss to not field at least three Villa players...while it's one thing to purposefully stock your team with DGers from Burnley, it's an entirely different thing to stock up on players from a high quality side like Villa that is bang-on form. Right now, I have Gabby, Milner and Dunne on my side...3/4 of the top points scorers for Villa for the entire season. I'll likely also have 2/3 of N'Zogbia, McCarthy and Scharner.

And yes, AM, I will be going for Hilario between the posts...lightning can't strike twice, can it?

An no, AM, I won't be going for Hugo...while James Milner may be a zombie, some dead people really are dead.

I had Kirkland preliminary in my team this weeka at just over 4 and saved him whilst the match was on last night, only went up by 1 as he hadnt much to do.

If I were you, which I may take my own advise, i would switch Torres for Defoe, depending on injury status. Home to Blackburn is hard to leave out.

Im waiting on Injury news for Fab, will change if not 100%, cannot risk him playing half a match again. I had him Gerrard and Torres this week and they amounted to about 9 points for about 45 mil - disastrous.

Scharners in this week, will wait for Friedels double week next week rather than this week, Milner costs too much and Rod isnt scoring much to justify playing him, even as a DG.

81.5 so far this weak with James, Alexander, Ricketts & Elliot still having chance to upgrade my score.

I thought that Liverpool's problems are over with Torres, Gerrard, Mascherano, Riera and even Glen Johnson back.. but I as you see I was wrong, they still have Benitez :( I wish they would get rid of that problem as soon as it's possible.

PS. Next time I won't spend 31 to catch you (I get 0.5 more points than you thanks to Gerrard's great performance; both of us had Torres)

Half a point over the century with Knight, Wilshire, Davies, Fox and Sorrenson to play.

Really struggling with next week's team - I want Downing but I'm paying (about 6) for letting him go when he had two blanks. It looks like I'll have to have Phil Neville as a filler.

60.5 pts so far with Jussi, Hutton, Hreidarsson, Lee C-Y & Fletcher still to play.

Current BD teeam:

Jussi
Verm/Hutton/Rio (Fox?)
Pienaar/Fab4/Arteta/Nzog
Bendtner/Torres/Carew

Thinking of changing out Rio to Fox. One of Pienaar or Arteta has to go but for who? Am going to wait till Friday to pull the plug on Fab4. Torres probably changing out to Rooney or Defoe...

I had thoughts about adding Hilarious, but when I chose him last week I got stung bigtime for -9 points. Not so attractive having a Chelsea keeper in your team especially when they're going to be facing Diamante bang on form. I might just stick with Jussi?!
Also, I'm half tempted to hang onto Rio (although I'll probably add Warnock to the team), coz I feel that Rio will want to put Murphy in his pocket.
I like the Maxi to McCarthy swap coz he should make his cost to points ratio over 2 games (6.8)
Bfay Ashley young (I think that's right) as someone said earlier in this blog he's not as attractive as he once was but again should be worth his value over 2 games.
If Fabregas is fit I'm tempted to stick with him against a Hull side haemoraging goals even if they are away.
I also like the thought of adding N'Zog but not keen on loosing Lee coz he's been a consistant performer for us bloggers.

I'd still like to know what you all think about adding Carew 6-7m over 2 games and bang on form (Will he get the nod over Heskey?)

Put this on the previous blog but AM wrote a new one!

@ Bojan - Nicely balanced team you got there. I think Friedel is a great pick. I just wish I had some of your discounts on Wigan DF (I missed the bd last night :()...!!!

83pts with Fox/Hutton/Lee still to go. I hope to break the 100pts barrier. Man, this last month really screwed me up, with all double and tripple-weeks, shiiiite...!!! I'm slowly slipping in the rankings (currently 143 from 77, overall :()...!!!

My provisional (very nearly definite) team for next week:

Friedel (fp)
Verm,Bale,Dunne(fp),Scharner(fp)
Arteta(7,90),Milner(fp),JMccarthy(fp,:P)
Bender,Agbonlahor(fp),Carew

I'm still contemplating a switch Scharner/Carew to either Fox/N'Zogbia or Walcott/N'Zogbia...!!!
And yes, I'm about to sell Rooney @16,37 (he screwed my last 2 weeks), Walcott @6,13, Hutton @3,82, Fabs @18,61, Fox @6,07,Jussi @6,29 and Torres @15,83 (I know...go ahead, shoot me :(). I simply have to win back some ground by NOT holding to some players just b/c of discounts.

Wish me luck...!!!

Normally i dont post, however, i do read the comments section with keen interest. Today, I would like to offer my take on picking players based on fixtures.

My limited knowledge of playing YFF suggests me never to bank on players with away games in the decisive phase of EPL. Away victories are getting rarer by days. With EPL entering the final stage, it is very important that one should analyse motivational factor of teams before picking them.

Highly motivated teams : Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal (all contenders for the tittle)

2nd level :
Spurs, Pool, Villa, Citeh, Everton (CL spot awaits)

3rd level :
Bolton, Wigan, West ham, Sunderland, Wolves, Hull, Burnley, Pompey (relegation threat)

Last Level:
Birmingham, Fulham Stoke, Blackburn (i would say level of indifference or safe zone)

Teams from the 3rd level in the next 4-5 weeks would try to reach the last level (safe zone). Their best chance to reach that level are HOME GAMES. I expect all the 3rd level teams to perform strongly in their home games and go for 3 points rather than play for draws.

So the next 4-5 match weeks are very crucial. Exercise extreme caution in picking your players.

Its time to select players based on Match-ups and not on discounts.

My team for next week right now:

James

Bale Carlisle Dunne

N'zog Arsh Milner Mikel

Rooney Torres Carew

I dropped fabs and hutton to make room for dunne and milner... i think it's a smart move to have those guys on your team - villa has the best (and one of the most expensive) defense in the game, but its often well worth the cost as they can get a goal every now and then and have a good chance for a CS

milner was on my 'dead to me' list but given the options in midfield, i still think he's the best choice.

Up front i dropped bendtner at 5.56 for carew. its a risky move - i think that despite bendtner's whiff-o-matic game last week, he still has a pretty good chance to score a goal...

but i also think that a player as cheap as carew, who has not had too much of a chance this year but is a well established player, WITH a DG, has a good chance to rack up some points - all he needs is a couple SOT's, or an assist or a goal to earn back his value, and hopefully he can do that and more in two games... assuming he manages to play both.

i wanted to have at least one wigan player and hrod would have been my first choice were it not for my current lineup up front (torres/rooney/carew). with that, i chose the next best player - n'zog.

Saul said...

I think Bendtner just got his starting role by scoring in the Champs league...confidence boost for Wenger???

The Orphans™ said...

Hi AM,

I think there is a good chance Liverpool will go ballistic on Portsmouth at Anfiled next week.

15,000 reds fans were at Wigan to watch that pathetic display, Rafa and his players will want a very strong home showing for the fans.

Look for Stevie G to be pushed up right behind Torres, they will be out for blood, the floodgates might open if they score early...

It's a shame it's yet another double week when we all will be trying to squeeze in as many Villa players as we can, maybe this is the week to stray from the path and do something different.

Maybe just Milner and one defender from Villa.

Anyway good for Wigan, it's great for THFC!!!!

Cheers,

Typical - no goals for Bentner on the week-end when he could have scored a hatful, then he scores two from two shots in CL! maybe worth keeping him for another week after all as you say Saul.

First of all, nice hat trick for Bendtner, while it's disappointing for us EPL fantasy players, honestly I am not surprised. For those of you who have already dropped him, we will see how it goes in the upcoming weeks. As an Arsenal fan, I think Bendtner will continue to be fed several opportunities to score each game, and while he may totally blow some days, he should still have enough SOTs to justify his price.

Don't know what to do with Torres though. It seems both likely that Liverpool flop again, or trash Portsmouth. Obviously, Liverpool have a game against Lille on Thursday, so we can observe how they play again. Any thoughts or comments?

Id like to have 2 Villa midfielders in my line-up, currently i only have Milner. MY 2 options are dropping Torres for Gabby which would free up enough cash to get Young or Downing, or i could swap ALmunia for Hilario and which would give me enough to get Downing. Im really having a hard time dropping Torres but he is out of form and 2 games for Gabby is tempting. What do you guys think

I really thought the reunited Torres and Gerrard would shred Wigan who have given up so many goals all season.

My over priced roster of torres, gerrard, rooney, and fabregas wildly underperformed and I dropped out of first in my private league for the first time all season.

Im dumping both Torres and gerrard to get players on teams that are playing better AND have a good matchup. Only holding Bale, Arteta, and Rooney for discounts despite matchups.

Will be flipping guys around who go up against Wolves, Hull, Bolton, and low tier teams who like to give up the goods repeatedly each week.

May dump Fab too to free up cash for guys who will definitely play this weekend. no more big expenditures for names, ugh, made me feel a little like the NY Yankees, but no rings to show for it last week.

I had Gordon, I pick Gordon!!

Look you get the picture, my Team as of 10am Saturday morning would be sat on 141 points, instead am on 92, am really beating myself up about it this week.

Oh I had Walcott, small crumb of comfort.

Sulldaddy i dropped Fabs when i saw that he was a doubt and i feel like it is the right move especially after how they played to day in his absence. As dominant as they were, unless he is 100 percent i dont see Wenger using him for anything more than a sub.

Alex - I know exactly what you mean. I had Wilshere the previous week; I sold him to make room for Nani. Considered Bent, but instead went for Paterson (I do hope he scores lots of points tomorrow). More importantly, I was going to get Nasri but had 2.5 million extra so I got Denilson. I regret spending the full 100 million and should have spent only 95. I'm currently sitting on 69.5; would have been less if not for Arteta's wonders.

Even though everyone disagrees, I'm going to go with Torres and Gerrard. Sure, yes, they lost to Wigan but it was away and, yes, Wigan tend to play better against big opposition (look at Aston Villa and Chelsea at DW Stadium). I feel it is now or never for Liverpool and if they don't straighten up their act, actions will be taken...or not, but i choose to believe so. Anyways, my team is and hopefully it stays cause I like it...

Hilario
Bale/Hutton/Fox
Gerrard/Arteta/Milner/Downing
Torres/Agbonlahor/Bendtner

I waited until today's game to decide whether to loose or keep Bendtner and he repaid my faith...and hopefully Wenger's as well because mine counts for sh*te in his eyes. Now, on to Hutton Hutton, how the hell did he only manage 7 points in a 4-0 win??? I know, I know, I only got him for less than 3 but Sunderland is bound to be crushed by City...that's my guess. In any case I would only have 5.3 for his spot so might as well keep him (not at bad filler I guess) Anyways, sorry guys for speculating too much but please let me know if you disagree with my arguements and I won't hold them against you. Also, comments and suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

Thanks all

Also I think I was wrong about Belletti being out for 3 games after his red card...can anyone clear that out for me please. Thanks, Saul

I can see why people are all over AV midfielders and forwards, but wouldn't it be a good idea to pick up a defender? AV's defenses are quite ridiculous even on the road (11 GA away vs 10 GA at home; tied with Chelsea and Liverpool with 5 CS away). Stoke and Wigan are not exactly that threatening even at home, so I think AV should be able to pull a CS in one of the games. Anyone think Friedel may actually be worth the price?

I'm hating this week. If not for the DG, I could have a big week as there are pretty nice single matchups. Now I'm gonna lose discounts on my players. I know I should not be keeping players because of their discounts at this stage of the season. But I just can't bring myself to click the "Save team changes" button. As a result, I'm finding myself short of cash. Wigan players have just got more expensive after their win over Pool.

My current team looks like this (really unsure about it.

S. Petrov

F. Torres

I have one spot left but only 4.99 in the bank! I don't want to get hilario for jensen. Too big of a risk. I can't even get heskey, who's priced at 5ish. Got Walcott preupdate but sold him rashly. I want an Arsenal representaive and am left with Arshavin. Please help!!!

Still mulling over Aston Villa players? Here's an interesting read on the effect of Milner playing in the middle, from Fantasy Football Scout. AV defence seems to be the premium pick.

http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2010/03/08/the-technical-area-milner-in-the-middle/

@Saul: I am inclined to keep Torres myself because of a few reasons.

- Liverpool surely have to make amends for the woeful Wigan defeat. Playing at Anfield should surely help lift them.
- Portsmouth's defence v Birmingham is all over the place and can't keep their shape.
- Looking at the weekly stats, Torres hasn't done two stinkers in a row, although he didn't play that many games.
- Liverpool home record: W10 D2 L2 GS33 GA12, Portsmouth away record: W2 D2 L10 GS7 GA25.

For me, these are probably enough reasons for keeping Torres as much as I really like Portsmouth's fighting spirit.

Sometimes, I also like to try to buck the trend and go against the flow, if there are enough reasons for me to do so. It is a risk, doesn't always work out, but it is challenging, fun and exciting. ;-)

Anyway, Belletti is suspended for one game, so he will be available.
http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~1986967,00.html

"Ballack and Juliano Belletti were both serving one-game bans for their red cards against Manchester City last weekend, they will be available next weekend's visit of West Ham."

@Bengoh91: That's a tough one. I'd definitely stick with Jensen over Hilario this week. One of the few ways I can see you freeing up cash for another striker, especially if you're adamant on having an arsenal rep, is if you downgrade Arshavin to either Diaby or Nasri. You'll be left with enough to get Carew in. Good luck!

Not a particularly good week for me... like many of you, I was banking on Pool (Torres) to produce the goods. 94 points and all my players are done for the week (I really should've slot in a DGer).

Learned my lesson and will now be loading up on as many DGers as possible. The price drop in Villa players has helped with my team:

Friedel
Bale Vermaelen Hutton
Arteta N'Zog Milner Young
Rooney Bendtner Carew

Right on the 100m mark! I guess i have an option to play 4-3-3, swapping Young for Dunne, Collins or Cuellar. I'll take the next few days before deadline to decide. I like the look of the team (and the possible 4-3-3 option). Hopefully this team will finally get me top of my private league. What would you guys do?

Anonymous said...

I was satisfied with my team... and then I check today and now have almost 6 mil in the bank! Milner and Young price drop!

STM interesting Villa post... not sure it helps or just adds to more confusion. As a yank we love stats, but at this point in the season match-ups need to prevail. Hans-- excellent post regarding applying a "motivational factor".

Many people's selections will be made depending on the private leagues they are in... for me, atop my league makes me try and "cover" the obvious choices and has left me not being very adventurous....

THANKS to AM for the tips on Bale, Fox, Hutton as it has freed up all sorts of cash and with my HUGE Drogba discount (which I am not allowed to mention anymore... and somebody was wondering how it effected us who kept him in the long run... I am now top 800 exactly where I was before ACN... and that is with disaster ZEROS from Cahill, Valencia, & Insua)

AM - I like the suggestion about posting some advice before posting your own line-up... my biggest problem is I look at other's line-ups and get a little envious as they most often sound great! Last week someone posted a Kuyt, Torres, Rooney, Gerrard, Verm, Fabs, and a couple double gamers and I thought WOW! How did they do that... that team is AWESOME!!! Glad I did not do that.

My potential line-up until I am gifted another 6 mil tomorrow :)
Friedl
Bale, Fox, Hutton, Scharner (all at huge discounts)
Milner, Young, Downing (all at current deflated prices)
Drogba, Bendtner, Rodalega (all at discounts)

I am very concerned with my midfield as going so heavy on ALL Villa players could spell disaster... I have watched last 3 Wigan games (I know, I need a life) and N'Zogbia is playing more defensively and has not impressed me enough to want to pick him over one of the Villa men.... Nasri and Arshavin tempt me, but in the end the double gamer factor wins.

Hutton and Fox.... cheap and scoring points. Tempted to switch Fox out to get a Villa defender, but have Friedl to cover Villa clean sheet and Burnley is home to Wolves. Switching Hutton doesn't really do much for me and he consistently returns his value of 3.

Rodalega.... I am smart enough to learn from the Hilario pick, but maybe not smart enough to learn from the triple week.... anyone know how Rodalega is after leaving the pitch with a knock???? if he is not going to play two games I have no interest in him.

Thanks for all the post...

i really believe torres and/or gerrard combo is a great move this week (it's now on never for them, and portsmouth being all in on FA cup:), but i just can't resist DG-ers

Cheers!!
