Deadline Day

So Deadline Day is over for the Premier League and to be honest there wasn't too much to get excited about.

The biggest move of the day was Robbie Keane departing Spurs for Celtic, but seeing as this is a Fantasy Football Blog lets focus on the players who have come in. Here's a full list of the comings & goings in the English top flight...

IN
Burnley - Jack Cork, David Nugent
Fulham - Christopher Buchtmann, Stefano Okaka, Nicky Shorey
Manchester City -  Adam Johnson
Stoke - Asmir Begovic
Sunderland - Alan Hutton
West Ham - Benni McCarthy, Mido
Wigan - Marcelo Moreno, Victor Moses

OUT
Birmingham - Marcus Bent
Blackburn - Benni McCarthy
Chelsea - Jack Cork
Fulham - Wayne Brown, Toni Kallio, Diomansy Kamara
Liverpool - Christopher Buchtmann
Portsmouth - Asmir Begovic, David Nugent
Stoke - Michael Tonge
Sunderland - David Healy, Daryl Murphy, Nyron Nosworthy
Tottenham - Alan Hutton, Kyle Naughton, Robbie Keane

I must admit I'm unfamiliar with some of the names, but from the players I can comment on, an immediate bargain pops up in Alan Hutton. Given Sunderland's defence problems you have to imagine he's been brought in to start at right back & he costs just £3.59m at the moment. Nick Shorey could be another defensive option who should start & get the odd set piece now he's moved to Fulham.

In midfield we have Boro's Adam Johnson joining Man City, but how the England U21 left winger is going to get in the team with Bellamy & Petrov in his way is anyone's guess. We'll have to wait to see whether Victor Moses is added as a midfielder or forward, but I've seen the boy play a few times for Palace & he's got everything to be a success in the Premier League...a great dea for Wigan.

Upfront West Ham were busy bringing in Mido & Benni McCarthy. Which of them will start alongside Carlton Cole? Who knows, but you have to imagine Diamanti & Franco are going to find their first team opportunities limited by the double swoop. Nugent extends his loan with Burnley & Begovic moves to Stoke to provide Sorenson come competition.

I hope I haven't missed any Premier League transfer out? Please correct me if I have. Also, as I mentioned I'm unfamiliar with some names: Buchtmann, Cork, Okaka & Moreno...can any blog readers provide some insight in to what we can expect from them?

Cheers,
AM

You forgot Ilan who comes to West Ham from Saint Ettiene. 6 strikers there, so it's a lot of uncertainty regarding who will start each match.

Cheers SF, that was one I missed. Not really sure what Zola's plan is...how can you keep all those strikers happy!?

Moreno was great in Brazil... he scored 50 goals in 70 matches for Vitoria and Cruizero... Shaktar spash a shit-load of money on him but he was reserve there... so he could be great if he find his old form

Christopher Buchtmann-left sider, but good on both feet. has flair. youngster. electrifying for his age. But who knows what will he be in the future. a potential star in the making. Gutted Liverpool 'sold' him(wonder if there are any 'buy-back' clause on this kid.)

Am what happened with naughton. It upsets me, as we were looking to pick him up, then spurs hijacked him, and then loaned him (im guessing) away...

Vasilis Torosidis could be on his way to Liverpool... so watch out.

was hoping Liverpool could snap up S taylor(NewC), Nadir Belhadj and/or Kevin-Prince Boateng on the cheap. too bad.

Buchtmann was seen as a player with massive potential by Liverpool fans. But apparently he has not impressed since being promoted to melwood from the u18s this season so he's been shipped out as his contract was running down.

Also, it'll be interesting to see if good old 'Arry gets the same slagging in the press that Rafa got for not getting the best out of Keane for Spurs. At least Benitez realised his mistake and recuoped almost all of his transfer fee. I'd hate to imagine the reaction in the media had he shipped Keane out on loan after paying such a large fee for him.

Well at least 'Arry's getting the best out of Crouchy so 1 out of 2 can't be too bad

i'm excited to see Okaka in the premiership. seen him play a few times for roma and he's a skilful, powerful forward with a very attacking mind. one of those yakubu types almost, but with more skill! I think he could do well up from for fulham. i'll defo be getting him in my team for the coming gameweek if his price is reasonable. 2 good chances for fulham to break their losing streak!

Stuart Holden, an American Midfielder, has signed with Bolton, but not sure when or how much time he'll get once he starts playing.

I found this site looking for all the transfers myself (trying to find bargain fillers who I think could get some decent playing time and have a lot of potential)...

what's everyones' guess as to how long it will take Yahoo to add the newly transferred players? my guess is they will add a few right away and the rest will take a month...

Hutton is a very interesting option, a quick, attacking full back. Could be a good Bale replacement when BAE is back...if bale isn't first choice now

The move of Keane to Celtic justifies Rafa dumping him. Keano is the Kingo of Moveo

Okaka is a good foward player. I'll put my bet on him

Weird - Tevez's price went down to almost 15mil after last night, without any clear reason. Are people actually dropping him before the triple-week?
I decided to go with my guts and dropped Anelka and Givet for Rodallega and RJohnson. It still seems like a good move, though the away match at West Ham doesn't look that comfortable any more when the Hammers have 6 healthy strikers... but I believe Roger will do fine.
The two players that still worry me are Petrov and Etherington. I'm not sure how many of the 3 games Petrov will start when Adam Johnson and Bellamy threaten his spot. ManCini (did you notice that?) can go with either Johnson+Bellamy, SWP+Johnson or SWP+Bellamy, but my guess is that Petrov will start at least 2 of the matches, because he's in a good form and a good set-piece taker, while Johnson seems to me like a back-up player.
Etherington got only 5.5 points last night. He might be losing his touch there, but on triple-week he has 2 home games, so it might convince me to hold on. The replacement isn't that good either, when Lee isn't very stable, but I might take him instead of Petrov. Another option is to downgrade RJohnson and get Bridge instead, and then upgrade Petrov or Etherington to SWP or Ireland, but I'm not sure if it's the better option, as SWP returning from injury might start the same number of matches like Petrov, and Ireland and Bridge aren't very stable.
I want to keep N'Zogbia as well, as Wigan have light fixtures and he often scores well.

Given
Vermaelen Bale RJohnson
Duff Etherington N'Zogbia Petrov
Tevez Kalinic Rodallega

Advices?

@ west ham I would assume Cole starts right? then its Ilan, but McCarthy must have had some big assurances to move as he was benched at Bburn. Diamanti can play as a forward/att middie, Franco was just a stop gap and then Mr Mido, the papers widely report he is on just £1k a week as part of the deal so he's just the filler for when Cort gets injured again..surely?

North of the border, what a agreat attack Celtic have now, considering the quality of the league is like league 1 or 2 in England.

Alex said...

Oh and Sunderland have signed Benjani on loan

Anonymous said...

what do people think about Toure with ManCity triple... I want a city defender, but with all the injuries I am confused who will get to play???

bean said...

Fulop
Bale Shorey Hutton
Bentley Duff J.McC B.Ferg
Tevez HRod Drogba

Kellz said...

@SF: Tevez value dropped because no forward scored today. What I have noticed is when midfielders do well, prices of other midfields rise, and when they do bad, they fall. Its something to do with price rubric that Yahoo uses, thats why we see slight fluctuations on prices of players that don't play or have already played. However, if a player hasn't played regularly, this price fluctuation doesn't affect them, as you can see with reserve team players of all teams.

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the comments guys - I only focused on Deadline Day so missed out some the transfers completed earlier in the window. Some real useful info, Okaka sounds particularly interesting.

ToffeeDave - I'm annoyed about how Spurs have treated Naughton. He was considered one of the most exciting prospects in England last summer but once again we've given him no game time & now he's off on loan to Boro having played no football for almost 8 months. There is a similar story regarding John Bostock, who is now out on loan in League One. Everton would've been a better move for both of them as they always give youth a chance.

The problem Spurs have is they got rid of their reserve team last season (removed it from the reserve league) as they felt it would be better to arrange more suited friendlies throughout the season. But they've found it difficult to organise these games so players like Naughton, Bentley, Pavlyuchenko, Hutton etc have played very little football of any sort for months. No surprise they are rusty when they do get a chance.

Bean - I hope the majority of the players would be added for this weekend, but this is Yahoo we're talking about. Of course, players moving within the league (Hutton) can be picked up right away.

Cheers,
AM

@MBasil - I was thinking the same with the triple week coming up - does anyone think Wilshire or Weiss are likely to get a run in the Bolton team.

Also Basturk at Blackburn - don't know too much about him, and wondering if he will get a start for Blackburn?

Not keen to put too many new signings in for a triple week, as I have no idea what their match fitness will be like or whether managers will throw them in the deep end or ease them in from the bench for the first couple of games. Not a really big deal in a single game week but will be important for multiple games.

Paphos Toffee

Bojan said...

i think Basturk will be back up for Dunn, to give him rest... but if he plays good they could both be in starting 11... Basturk is very skilfull player and very dangerous when he is 100% ready...

Bojan said...

what he rearly is ;-)

btw, who do you think will start all 3 games for City? I think they are the best team to go for this week but Mancini seems to be rotating his squad a bit.

How does Keane moving to Celtic justify Rafa's misuse of him? he unsettled the player, bought him and then decided he didnt want him, giving him minimal starts in positions the guy isnt suited for. If anything its his stint at liverpool which is the cause of his complete lack of confidence and in turn his poor form. Absolute joke...if in Rafa you're still trusting after his poor purchasing has forced you out of the top 4 then you need your head examined. 3 other teams are now as good if not better...

@Bojan I agree, i seen him play in bundesliga years back..Skillfull player, seem he's run similar to Benayoun..

I thinkin' of havin him seem as Blackburn didn't have a playmaker due to DDunn injury..

but, as AM said..we talkin about Yahoo here, the newbies won't be there for Week 22..

damn, i thinking buy Hutton then..also Shorey..

MBasil

Anonymous said...

@Joshtotteham, well, he failed at Anfield, this is already a fact. But don't you find it strange that Spurs shipped out your CAPTAIN(since King is so injury prone) barely a year since he's back. moreover he made 21 game starts for liverpool in half a season time, not too shabby.

If Rafa had misused him, what about Harry(on Keane)?
Younes Kaboul? i surely need my head examined ;)
Roman Pavlyuchenko certainly didn't play for Liverpool. so how's he faring?
Rafa's wheeling and dealing with the players he brought in had been excellent relating to the financial situation at Anfield. If there is a team to push us out of top4 , its ManC. the rest are hot airs. This is a money-speaking league, the more you spend the higher you go, if its ManC, then so be it.
With our players coming back, quality will tell, as usual, and our second half will be better.

@joshtottenham
Robbie Keane failing at Liverpool had very little to do with Rafa, there's a myth that he missused Keane and often played him out of position, which is simply not true. He always played up front either with Torres, Gerrard or Kuyt. Benitez had nothing to do with him continuously missing sitters and his shocking attitude. Rafa realised his mistake, shipped him back to Tottenham and ended up paying around £3-4million for a 6 month loan of Keane. Where as after he went back to Spurs he was often shifted to left wing in order to try and find a place for him in the team.

Also, a question for Spurs fans, do you not think that after all the money 'Arry has spent since he took over at Spurs, he must win the Fa Cup or qualify for the Champions League this season? I mean he's spent so much on that squad he has to deliver something at the end of the season, surely?

Ouch to Gera owners, he is injured and won't be available against Portsmouth.

Verm,Bale,Garrido(6.89)
Eagles(6,24),Ethe(9,39),Duff (13.7x),Lee(fp)
Rooney(16.22),Tevez,Benitez(6,71)

As you see there is NO Wigan player, so it WILL change come friday. SURE to be there are: Given,Verm,Bale,Eagles,Ethe,Rooney,Tevez...!!!

I have 3 options:

1. Drop Garrido/Duff/Lee/Benitez for Zab/Nzogbia/JMcCarthy/HRod

2. Drop Garrido/Lee/Benitez for GCaldwell(MRichards,AFaye)/Nzogbia/Tunch

3. Drop Garrido/Lee/Benitez for Hutton/JMcCarthy/HRod

I'm leaning towards the the 1st one (and maaaybe the 3rd one) but...what do YOU think? Any suggestion???

@Newbie - Liverpool needs to be in the top 4 before they can be pushed out

Anonymous said...

@bean, when top 4 is mentioned, it is traditionally related to the final position, hence it will be top 4 (08/09).

@AM: Just a really funny side note, I started a new Manager Mode campaign on FIFA 10 with League 1 destroyers Leeds United two weeks ago, and the first transfer I made was to take John Bostock on loan, great player for FIFA, 18 and already 72 OVR.

@Newbie - I thought when top 4 is mentioned it is traditionally related to your position in the table? :)
