Injury Update 19/10/09

From football365.com
Very mixed news for Liverpool fans as Steven Gerrard trained ahead of their Champions League clash with Lyon after missing the Sunderland game with a groin strain, but Fernando Torres was nowhere to be seen.

Torres is still suffering from a groin injury so it seems that just one of the two-man team could be available to face the French side.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been hit with injury to Theo Walcott, who reoprtedly suffered medial damage to his knee in the Gunners win over Birmingham and will be sidelined for three weeks.

The Gunners are already missing Nicklas Bendtner, Eduardo, Gael Clichy, Denilson and Samir Nasri from their first-team ranks.

One former Arsenal player who took a knock at the weekend was Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor, who left the Wigan match early with an ankle/foot injury. But the good news is that Kolo Toure and Craig Bellamy are scheduled to return next week.

Chelsea fans who saw them concede two goals from set-pieces this weekend will be pleased to see that Alex is pencilled in to play for the Blues' reserves tonight after a lay-off with a groin strain.

Manchester United are set to be without influential midfielder Ryan Giggs for Wednesday's Champions League trip to CSKA Moscow.

Giggs suffered a knock towards the end of Saturday's 2-1 win over Bolton and is unlikely to travel to the Luzhniki Stadium.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson also has doubts over several other key players and told the club website: "Ryan Giggs has got a knock and is a doubt for Wednesday.

"Patrice Evra we'll have to look at on Tuesday, he may be a doubt.

"(Dimitar) Berbatov, I think, will be all right. Wayne Rooney, we've got to try to get ready for Wednesday.

"I'm hopeful (Nemanja) Vidic will be all right, but he'll certainly be ready for the Liverpool game."

Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole is undergoing a scan on his twisted knee today but there is a fear that he will be ruled out for months.

But there is good news about Kenwyne Jones, who twisted his ankle against Liverpool but should be okay to play next week.

So bad news for the increasingly injury prone Theo Walcott & potentially terrible news for Sunderland, as Cattermole has been a huge factor in their great start.

Liverpool will be desperate to get both Torres & Gerrard back for the United game, and it sounds like Rooney will be ready.

Cheers,
AM

Well personally, I'm happy that Adebayor is injured. That lousy traitor. But it makes my dilemma bigger...
Right now I'm with RvP and Crouch up-front. It seems smart to get Bent, but I get head-aches every time I search him in the team page. I just can't see him getting a lot of chances against Birmingham, and often he doesn't get many points more than the 10 for a goal... and the extra money is brutal - there are so many options that it is killing me!

I have to make a comment with the only purpose of not letting this post break the record as lowest commented post...!!!

My preliminary team:

Given
Verm,Heiti,Ivanovic
Billy,Fabs,KPB,o'H,Lamps
Drogs,Crouch

Far from definite, mind you ;-)...!!!

Cheers

Okay, Fidan, I'll pitch in too... :)

The myriad of striker permutations to put alongside Drogba is about to make my head explode. I BDed Bent Saturday in case I'd want him, but away to Birmingham isn't necessarily the best fixture. Bent's more of an opportunist than a play maker and can come up empty. Speaking of which, I got 0.5 out of Adebayor yesterday. I was planning on keeping him for the home match vs. Fulham, but between his injury and his non-performance, I doubt that'll stand.

So many questions, so little skill...

It's official: the only CSs go to Sunderland and Fulham. Might as well start picking my defenders with a monkey and a dartboard.

Just returned to Boston from four days in LA...not sure how many posters on this blog hail from the west coast of the U S of A but, man, it is tough to keep up with the pulse of the Prem in a timely manner from over there. I did find a pub that shows games that opens at 6am on the weekends...but even then, the Villa-Chelsea game was already at halftime before the first pint of ale had been poured.

Really good/solid week for me...116 points, largely due to the sublime performance of my midfield. You know you're having a good day as a manager when Cesc has 12 points and he is your WORST performing MF. I'm back atop of my private league (I've finally recovered from the Defoe-Robinho-Modric "lost weekend" of earlier this season). My only regret (i.e. a move that I was on the cusp of making but did not make) is not swapping out Mears for Paintsil but, really, I can't complain.

My current team for Week 9:

Given
Verms Heitinga Mears
Fabs O'Hara Billy KPB MTay
Drogs Bent

Even though he has been amazingly consistent this season, I still can't get over this feeling of unease at selecting Bent for my team...call it a hangover from his days being outplayed by Harry's wife at WHL. And I agree with Bradley 100% - I have never seen a "goal scorer" who accumulates fewer phantom points than Bent. As evidence, I submit to you the jury his 4 corners won and 5 fouls won this season. That's anemic and indicative of a player who is mostly a poacher and does not create a lot of chances for himself.

If you had told me a few weeks ago that I was seriously considering fielding two Pompey MFs on my team I would have called over the barkeep and ordered two of whatever you were drinking. But I think there's a pretty good chance I hold on to both O'Hara and KPB for this weekend's game at the KC. Wow, Hull had better start preparing to play Scunthorpe United and Doncaster Rovers next season.

As of now, I could see me rejiggering my line-up by trading out Bent and KPB for Crouch and Tevez. Please hold the laughter but there is also a possibility that I swap out KPB for Kightly but I probably will wait to see how he does and BD him - if he can regain a bit of his form from last season, he could be an amazing value pick at under 4 million.

AM - what odds would you have given me back in August if I had bet you that Hugo Rodallega and Jason Collins would both have more fanatsy points than Frank Lampard 9 games into the season?

finished selecting my team.. but i'll wait saturday to click 'save'.. hopefully no late injury news..

myhill
verma, heiti, sonko
fab, hunch, bily, brown
drog, hunch, bent

hull vs ports is tough to call.. but i'm confident hull can win.. not sure they can get cs tho.. hopefully few saves from myhill and blocks from sonk will get me positive points..

verm, fab & drog is my season keeper.. they stays unless injured..

bily stays.. heiti might be changed to someone else (got a feeling he'll wont produce much next week).. but wait these 2-3days if my mind chages..

brown is my new alternative filler (no more mr negative- mokoena)..

my two hunches is playing a weak team next week and might scores big..

first time i picked up bent (except rodallega in week1, i wont pick any forwards apart from united, ars, chels, livpool and mcity players).. anyway, he has a great game coming and been a consistent point scorer every week.. my biggest hunch (but not secret).. :p

Happy I picked Pantsil for last nights game. 9.5 pts for doing nothing much, but getting a CS for his efforts.

Took me to 125th overall - just 19.5 pts away from breaking into the top 50.

Still sitting 3rd in my YFF Blog League 3. Not bad considering the top position Unintended XI is top 10 overall.

Looking forward to making my selections for the upcoming week. There are many injuries to consider such as Cattermole, Adebayor, Giggs, Walcott, Torres, Gerrard, Rooney, Evra et al, and the next 2 days of CL football to see what transpires.

I will mull it over whilst enjoying a few beers during the upcoming days of CL games.

@AM

The blog is looking really healthy, and the comments are all helpful to a lot of members.

You've done a great job here.

Are you going to be posting the 2nd round results of the Blog Cup soon?

Cheers

Hey GTR - congrats on your great start to the season, & thanks for the kind words.

The 2nd Round of the Blog Cup is not until Week 12.

The Blog Cup

My plan was to space the rounds out every 4 or 5 weeks so they fill out the season. However, I may move the rounds closer together after Round 2 (maybe Week 14, 16, 18, 20, 22) and then run another Cup in the final 16 Weeks of the season.

Cheers

Hi AM

I realise you're trying to keep everyone happy finishing the Blog Cup early and then starting a second Cup, but I agree with your original idea of it lasting all season.

Whe not mirror the 'real' league and have two cups lasting most of the season (like FA & League). The second could be The AM Challenge.

I'm sure whatever you decide will be for the best as you're doing an excellent job.

Cheers.

I really like your idea Ian & it has been something I'd been thinking about. However, I'm concerned about my ability to run 2 competitions at the same time as the admin for 1 Cup is already quite time consuming.

Let me think about it, I may well post an update on my plans in the next day or 2, but you've certainyl given me soemthing to think about, cheers mate!

Just a random news, Crouch pissed off Harry by partying and looking ridiculous in the weekends. It might do something to his starting.. but not like Harry has any other choice with Defoe banned and Palyv still in the treatment room?
